While rejecting a conception of literature as moral philosophy, or a device for imparting particular morals to the reader through exemplary characters and plots, Maryse Condé has displayed throughout her writing career a strong valorization of literature as ethical critique. This study examines her singular approach to literary commitment as a critical reworking of aesthetic models and modes of interpretation. Focusing on four dominant problematics in Condé’s work—history and globalization in La Belle Créole and Moi, Tituba sorcière...noire de Salem, intertextuality and reception in La migration des cœurs and Célanire cou-coupé, trauma and subjectivity in En attendant le bonheur and Desirada, community and ethics in Traversée de la mangrove and Histoire de la femme cannibale—this analysis proposes to elucidate how, and to what ends, Condé engages, and alters, approaches to reading, staging the problematic, yet pragmatic, need to read well. This hermeneutic imperative foregrounds the need to engage with texts, to cannibalize texts while recognizing their fundamental opacity and inexhaustibility, their resistance to the reader’s interpretive habits.

Nicole Oresme was one of the most original and influential thinkers of the fourteenth century. He is best known for his mathematical discoveries, his economic theories, as well as his vernacular translations of cosmological and ethical texts that were undertaken at the request of King Charles V. This volume sheds light on the beginning of Oresme's scientific activity at the University of Paris (ca. 1340 – ca. 1350), a period of his intellectual career about which little is known. Over the course of this decade, Oresme lectured on many Aristotelian texts on natural philosophy, such as the Physics, On the Heavens, On generation and corruption, Meteorology, and On the Soul. Oresme's commentaries on Aristotle's Meteorology count among his only unpublished texts. This volume presents the first critical edition of books I-II.10 of the second redaction of Oresme's Questions on Meteorology. The edition is preceded by a historical and philological introduction that discusses the context of Oresme’s scientific career and examines the manuscript tradition.

The governing conservation equations for trace constituents, dry air, water substances, total mass, energy, entropy and momentum are presented, including simplifications and their application in models. A brief introduction to atmospheric boundary layer processes is presented as well. Basic principles of climatology discussed include analysis methods, atmospheric waves and their analytical solutions, tropical and extra-tropical cyclones, classical and non-classical mesoscale circulations, and the global circulation. The atmospheric chemistry section encompasses photolytic and gas-phase processes, aqueous chemistry, aerosol processes, fundamentals of biogeochemical cycles and the ozone layer. Solar and terrestrial radiation; major absorber; radiation balance; radiative equilibrium; radiative-convective equilibrium; and basics of molecular, aerosol and cloud adsorption and scattering and their use in remote sensing are also presented.

This moving novel traces the life of Grace Saint-Jean from the time she learns to negotiate the busy thoroughfares of Port-au-Prince and “wasn’t sure what school was exactly”—to the time she earns a doctorate from the Sorbonne and walks down the Champs Elysees with confidence—to the time she returns to Haiti imbued with a determination to help its poorest children get an education so they can have a brighter future. Grace’s own early experiences at school were not always pleasant, but as her education progresses, she realizes that she “loved books” and “wanted to be a scholar.” Grace gradually finds her identity as a student who wants to provide others with the same chance to learn. Grace’s desire to gain and transmit knowledge becomes an emotional investment, and she focuses on a personal long-range objective: to establish schools for the impoverished children of the countryside and the poor urban areas across Haiti. Grace’s instruction doesn’t only come from books. Because she finds herself in a world of opposing forces—those which nurture her strengths and those which aim to repress them—Grace must also educate herself emotionally and socially. Grace is helped by her parents, Therese and Mondestin, who make sacrifices so that she can go to school. Later, Germaine and Justin Bonhomme become surrogate parents who continue to encourage her. Along the way, Grace is also fortunate to encounter Carmelle-Marie and Jean-Michel, two highly motivated individuals who share her ideals. But Marc, the Bonhommes’ adopted son and Grace’s nemesis, becomes an agent of a regime that intends to strip her of the identity she has struggled to achieve and to compel her to conform or die. At one point in the novel, Pierre Lemoine, Grace’s uncle, says, “This is such a beautiful island that we live on!” What isn’t stated, but understood, is that the splendor of the island is overshadowed by a series of repressive situations that are not conducive to the education and well-being of the general public, but promote the maintenance of the status quo. What do we owe to each other simply out of respect, or concern, for our common humanity? What can we claim? The United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as well as many states' constitutions embody competing answers to these questions. Different accounts of what we owe to others out of concern for our common humanity ground divergent accounts of the basic minimum just societies and the international community must help people secure. A Minimally Good Life argues that concern for our common humanity requires helping others live minimally good lives when doing so does not require sacrificing our own ability to live well enough. This, it suggests, provides a unified answer to the question of what we must give to, and can demand from, others as a basic minimum. More precisely, Nicole Hassoun argues that people must obtain the things that let them secure the relationships, pleasures, knowledge, appreciation, worthwhile activities, and other things that a reasonable and caring person free from coercion and constraint would set as a minimal standard of justifiable aspiration. That is, as reasonable, caring, free people, we should put ourselves into each other's shoes and think about what we need to live well enough as each person. Hassoun makes this case by engaging with the main competitors in the literature: those that offer different accounts of the basic minimum and the limits of our obligations. She then defends a new way of helping people in present and future generations reach the sufficiency threshold and of responding to apparent tragedy when helping everyone seems impossible.
