For all that has been written about the Civil War's impact on the urban northeast and southern home fronts, we have until now lacked a detailed picture of how it affected specific communities in the Union's Midwestern heartland. Nicole Etcheson offers a deeply researched microhistory of one such community--Putnam County, Indiana, from the Compromise of 1850 to the end of Reconstruction-and shows how its citizens responded to and were affected by the war. Delving into the everyday life of a small town in one of the nineteenth century's bellwether states, A Generation at War considers the Civil War within a much broader chronological context than other accounts. It ranges across three decades to show how the issues of the day-particularly race and sectionalism-temporarily displaced economic and temperance concerns, how the racial attitudes of northern whites changed, and how a generation of young men and women coped with the transformative experience of war. False Bodies, True Selves explores the phenomenon of growing numbers of people in western society and beyond completely embedding their sense of identity in their appearance. Unlike other books which address either theoretical models of appearance-focused identity struggles or explore lived experiences of appearance-based battles, False Bodies delves into both. Importantly, the spiritual aspects of what it is to become enemies with one's body are given centre stage in the context of Donald Winnicott's theory of the true Self and the false Self. The book begins by looking at some of the myths, superstitions and fairy tales related to mirrors before moving on to western society's current obsession with appearance, which seems to have been compounded by the mass media. After looking at some of the most common manifestations of appearance-focused anguish including eating disorders and body dysmorphia, it begins to unpick the possible underlying meanings beneath such struggles with a particular emphasis on issues of a systemic nature.

What do we owe to each other simply out of respect, or concern, for our common humanity? What can we claim? The United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as well as many states' constitutions embody competing answers to these questions. Different accounts of what we owe to others out of concern for our common humanity ground divergent accounts of the basic minimum just societies and the international community must help people secure. A Minimally Good Life argues that concern for our common humanity requires helping others live minimally good lives when doing so does not require sacrificing our own ability to live well enough. This, it suggests, provides a unified answer to the question of what we must give to, and can demand from, others as a basic minimum. More precisely, Nicole Hassoun argues that people must obtain the things that let them secure the relationships, pleasures, knowledge, appreciation, worthwhile activities, and other things that a reasonable and caring person free from coercion and constraint would set as a minimal standard of justifiable aspiration. Academic Paper from the year 2023 in the subject Pedagogy - General, , language: English, abstract: Parental involvement in children's education is a topic of contemporary interest and significance in the line of educational research. Parents are oftentimes regarded as the child's first teachers, and their actions largely influence their children's education and learning. As guardians, guides, and mentors, the parents possess the power to actively support and massively subordinate their children's development as students. The study aimed to investigate the relationship between parents' involvement and the academic performance of the students within the unique context of the University of Cebu at Pardo and Talisay Inc. The research used a correlational approach to determine whether there is a significant relationship between parents' involvement and the student's academic performance. Utilizing the correlational design, relationships between the variables are examined without any of the variables being under the researchers' direct control or manipulation. The results of the study showed that there is a positive correlation between the variables. However, the study also found that some students experience parental pressure, which can have a negative impact on their academic performance. It is recommended that parents find a balance between involvement and pressure to support their children's academic success and inform the development of strategies to promote and enhance positive parenting, both at home and in educational settings, to benefit students' intellectual development.
