For many, it can be hard to believe. People can be skeptical about Jesus Christ and Christianity, or they can think that they just don’t have a good reason to believe. Yet so many of us can’t shake this feeling that we should try to understand God and what we believe about Him—but where do we start? In Cursed with Common Sense, author Nicole Nelson shares her own journey from skepticism and doubt to faith in God. Through her stories, she hopes others can relate to her experiences as she walks with you through the questions she had—and still has—and how she got to the point that she found herself now: writing a book and sharing her faith with the world. You can have common sense and faith in Jesus. Nicole will take you through her process of realizing that God is real and how it changed her life. Cursed with Common Sense won’t tell you what to do or what to think, but together you can explore these questions and arrive at your own faith.
This collection bundles two of Nicole Eunice’s nonfiction titles into one volume for a great value! She’s Got Issues We’ve all got our issues! Maybe you feel like life just isn’t going your way, or you’re afraid that you don’t measure up to other people’s expectations. Perhaps you have a hard time managing your temper or have someone in your life you just can’t forgive. We deal with our “issues” every day in one form or another; the problem is, after a while, they start to feel . . . normal. Unchanging. Just part of who we are. And we forget that we have access to the power of Christ—a power that can transform our everyday weaknesses into our greatest strengths and gifts. In She’s Got Issues, Christian counselor, ministry leader, and regular mom Nicole Unice explores the ordinary issues that are keeping you from the full and free life you were meant to have. Applying years of counseling with practical scriptural teaching and a fresh and authentic voice, Nicole shows you how to let God freely shape your character—and transform your life from ordinary to abundant. Brave Enough Find the courage to be who you are—not who you wish you were. Is fear holding you back from becoming your best self? Does it add stress to your day and keep you up at night? What could be different if you let go and started living brave today? Bravery doesn’t have to mean cliff diving out of your comfort zone. Life is about being brave enough—for yourself, for God, for your tasks, and for your calling—right where He’s placed you. A brave-enough life is one lived fully and confidently, with your shoulders relaxed and free from the weight of responsibility and the burden of trying too hard. Nicole Unice, author of She’s Got Issues, wants that life to become a reality for you. She challenges you to get real about where you are right now—the places where you feel too scared to change, too tired to endure, or too worried to let go. Through personal stories and practical application, Nicole will lead you on a journey to harness all of your misspent doubts, concerns, and fears—and discover what God is saying about who you can be. Akin to No One belongs to an appealing genre known as Bildungsroman, a work of literature concerned with a young person’s passage from childhood to maturity through education and emotional development. This moving novel traces the life of Grace Saint-Jean from the time she learns to negotiate the busy thoroughfares of Port-au-Prince and “wasn’t sure what school was exactly”—to the time she earns a doctorate from the Sorbonne and walks down the Champs Elysees with confidence—to the time she returns to Haiti imbued with a determination to help its poorest children get an education so they can have a brighter future. Grace’s own early experiences at school were not always pleasant, but as her education progresses, she realizes that she “loved books” and “wanted to be a scholar.” Grace gradually finds her identity as a student who wants to provide others with the same chance to learn. Grace’s desire to gain and transmit knowledge becomes an emotional investment, and she focuses on a personal long-range objective: to establish schools for the impoverished children of the countryside and the poor urban areas across Haiti. Grace’s instruction doesn’t only come from books. Because she finds herself in a world of opposing forces—those which nurture her strengths and those which aim to repress them—Grace must also educate herself emotionally and socially. Grace is helped by her parents, Therese and Mondestin, who make sacrifices so that she can go to school. Later, Germaine and Justin Bonhomme become surrogate parents who continue to encourage her. Along the way, Grace is also fortunate to encounter Carmelle-Marie and Jean-Michel, two highly motivated individuals who share her ideals. But Marc, the Bonhommes’ adopted son and Grace’s nemesis, becomes an agent of a regime that intends to strip her of the identity she has struggled to achieve and to compel her to conform or die. At one point in the novel, Pierre Lemoine, Grace’s uncle, says, “This is such a beautiful island that we live on!” What isn’t stated, but understood, is that the splendor of the island is overshadowed by a series of repressive situations that are not conducive to the education and well-being of the general public, but promote the maintenance of the status quo. In the end, Grace must accept the fact that, until things change, the freedom to pursue her plans can only be found elsewhere. See Kirkus Reviews for a review of this book.
Nicole Treadwell has a secret. If she reveals it, she will surely die. Of course, she knows it´s true because certain death is what he promised her after the "incident" in the deep woods years ago. Her fate ever in his hands, keeping the secret guts her on the inside as she struggles to make ends meet, serving as a law clerk to a dangerously ambitious judge in the Nation’s Capitol with secrets of her own. Nicole is tired--exhausted--toying with thoughts (she´s afraid to own) of letting life go. Her life is unraveling, her sound mind frayed. At the end of herself, she knows she can’t save herself, but who can? Worse, does she want to be saved? A swift reply to both questions comes in the way of a still, small voice at an unlikely time that ushers her onto a path few dare to tread or openly discuss. In contrast, Nicole´s former law school chumb and classmate, Timothy Grue, is a hotshot, private attorney who blazes notorious trails in and out of the courtroom. Both handsome and brash (owing to his kinship with privilege and social standing of a “fine” Philadelphia family), he seems to have the world on a string, every creature comfort easily within his reach, including an overabundance of company from the “fairer sex.” Despite his privilege and pedigree, Tim later learns that it came at a very high price. By a stroke of legal fortune (or misfortune), their paths collide professionally, as Tim is handpicked to represent an "A-List" Hollywood client in a lawsuit over which Nicole´s boss is the presiding judge. Not so secretly, the judge relishes the prospect of having her “fifteen seconds of fame” before the world press. Her staff knows that the attention from the paparazzi may prove to be her professional undoing--and theirs. Her job potentially on the line, Nicole contacts Tim Grue for a clandestine meeting of the minds, but will Tim take the bait and “sign on” to Nicole’s “harmless” solution? Their former friendship (on course to self-ignite or implode) sets in motion a chain of events that blast open the door to Nicole´s secret past and their bitter-sweet history; and where crises of identity, spirituality, and morality intersect, conflicting issues of race and class deepen already murky waters, as Nicole is black, and Timothy is white. Yet, as between the two, they want to know why race is still an issue at all? On the road from hell to higher ground, both learn that anything worth having is always tried by fires of a faith that asks, simply, what do you really believe? And more, can redemption ever come too late?
She closes her eyes, trying to remember more perfectly, trying to get the smell and the feel of that one afternoon clear in her head.' Sam's life is haunted by the day that her mother inexplicably abandoned her at the beach, leaving her homeless at thirteen. One minute she was surfing the pure, clean waves, and the next she was completely on her own. Years later, Sam has created a life for herself by the sea with her partner Em. When a coma patient is brought to the hospital where Sam works, she believes the woman to be her mother. Before she can discover the truth, she must unravel her own memories of that traumatic day. The True Green of Hope is a provocative novel about the natures of love, memory and belonging.
Money changes everything, especially in politics. Politicians, think tanks, and political parties would not be where they are without monetary gifts. Yet, when it comes to celebrating donors, the media often praise liberals for their selfless giving and criticize conservatives for their selfish hoarding. But Ron Robinson and Nicole Hoplin, leaders of Young America's Foundation, set the record straight in Funding Fathers: The Unsung Heroes of the Conservative Movement. Part historical account of the conservative movement and part exposé about political philanthropy, Funding Fathers busts the myth that conservatives donate less money than democrats and exposes how the media, liberal organizations, and even conservatives perpetuate this lie.

Built around the life and teachings of master percussionist, Michel Merhej Baklouk, this book has been designed as a biographical tribute, a teaching manual, and a resource guide for anyone wishing to develop a deeper understanding of the role that percussion plays in Near Eastern Arabic music. This book differs from most technique manuals in that it includes historical information on about Arabic music as it pertains to the life and work of a single artist, Michel Merhej Baklouk. the book is composed of three parts: Introduction, Lessons, and Reference Information. Each part is written to stand on its own as well as fit with the whole so that readers can approach the book either as individual articles and lessons, or in its entirety, to be read from cover to cover. By presenting Michel's work in this way, we hope to appeal to a wider audience—percussion students at varying skill levels and from varying music disciplines and backgrounds, students of music and Middle Eastern studies, or anyone else interested in twentieth century Arab music and culture. the first part, Introduction, contains several essays about Michel's life, his teaching philosophy, pedagogical practices, musical aesthetics and performance practices. Although these sections may be read independently, they are also designed to help percussion students apply the book's lessons to their own playing and musical interpretations. the technical focus of this book is on the riqq; however, students of Arabic music (beginning through advanced) can adapt the practical exercises to gain mastery of the percussion instrument(s) of their choice. the second part, Lessons, begins with information about how to hold the percussion instrument (case in point: the riqq) and how to practice effectively. It then presents the body of exercises that Michel developed for his students. These exercises have been taken directly from Michel's notated lessons, which he developed into units corresponding to levels of proficiency, or academic years as he taught them at the Conservatory in Beirut; however, for the purposes of this book, the exercises are reorganized to correspond to subject matter and only roughly mirror Michel's conservatory sequence. Unit 1, Technique Building Exercises, is aimed at novice players or anyone who is new to reading music. Units 2 through 5 focus on specific rhythmic structures with increasing complexity. Students should master each unit of exercises before proceeding to the next unit. the third part, Reference Information, includes a notation reference, a list of rhythms, a list of further reading recommendations, and a glossary of Arabic music terms, many of which are used in the text. All Arabic words in this book appear in italics, except proper names, and with the exception of some proper Arab names, the text is essentially written in the standard system of transliteration used by the Library of Congress and most academic literature Throughout the book you will see quotations from Michel offset in the text. These prosaic tidbits may be words of wisdom, interesting anecdotes about Michel's life, or insights into his work and world of music. Each provides a glimpse into the personality of this exceptional musician. As a technical manual for students of Arabic percussion, Classical Riqq Technique provides specific exercises and explores important concepts—some of which are rarely taught, even in private lessons. At the same time, this book strives for a broader goal—to present and preserve classical percussion from the perspective of a master who not only lived in but also influenced the golden age of Arabic music. “A sustained shot of brilliance” (Boston Globe)—ten globetrotting stories exploring the complex relationships between men and women. A Best Book/Short Story Collection of the Year: O, The Oprah Magazine, Financial Times, Esquire, Lit Hub, Bustle, Electric Literature, Library Journal New York Times Editors’ Choice Nicole Krauss plunges fearlessly into the struggle to understand men and women and the tensions that have existed in all relationships from the beginning of time. Set in our contemporary moment and moving across the globe from Switzerland, Japan, and New York City to Tel Aviv, Los Angeles, and an unnamed country in South America, the stories in To Be a Man feature men as fathers, lovers, friends, children, seducers, and even a lost husband who may never have been a husband at all. The way these stories mirror one another and resonate is beautiful, with a balance so finely tuned that the book almost feels like a novel. Echoes ring through stages of life: aging parents and newborn babies; young women’s coming-of-age and the newfound, somewhat bewildering sexual power that accompanies it; generational gaps and unexpected deliveries of strange new leases on life; mystery and wonder at a life lived or a future waiting to unfold. With a fierce, unwavering light To Be a Man illuminates the forces driving human existence: sex, power, violence, passion, self-discovery, aging. Profound, poignant, and brilliant, Krauss’s stories, at once startling and deeply moving, are always revealing of all-too-human weakness and strength. “Superb. . . . Krauss’s depictions of the nuances of sex and love, intimacy and dependence, call to mind the work of Natalia Ginzburg. . . . Krauss’s stories capture characters at moments in their lives when they’re hungry for experience and open to possibilities, and that openness extends to the stories themselves: narratives too urgent and alive for neat plotlines, simplistic resolutions or easy answers.” —Molly Antopol, New York Times Book Review ”From a contemporary master, an astounding collection of ten globetrotting stories, each one a powerful dissection of the thorny connections between men and women. . . . Each story is masterfully crafted and deeply contemplative, barreling toward a shimmering, inevitable conclusion, proving once again that Krauss is one of our most formidable talents in fiction.” —Esquire
Christians have always looked to models within the Christian faith to guide their lives. At a time when the church is more identifiable by ugly partisan politics--what we call "crappy Christianity"--than by compassionate neighbor love, this book highlights the lives and work of seven individuals who are pursuing their Christian calling in humility and profound love for and service to others, this book highlights the lives and work of seven individuals who are pursuing their Christian calling in humility and profound love for and service to others. Their commitments have led to vocations in working with homeless women, employing refugees, lobbying on Capitol Hill for environmental protection, healing trauma in urban communities, peacemaking in Israel-Palestine, advocating for immigrants, and walking alongside people in addiction recovery. Their individual and collective witness offer compelling examples of authentic Christian life, which is marked in part by active, embodied faith in pursuit of the common good; a broad and inclusive love for all people; rightly ordered political identities and loyalties; and a commitment to work toward holistic redemption of both people and the systems that constitute our life together. In contrast to much of contemporary American Christianity, these models of faith demonstrate that Christians should focus much more on what we are for rather than what we are against.
Billy Graham once said in a sermon, "This civilization will go down as the age of anxiety. Previous generation feared death. Our generation fears life." Depression and anxiety violate our society on a daily basis, and Christians are not immune from this attack-though I do believe that Christians are offered the greatest tools to fight back in the battle. This study is extremely personal to me. Not only have I struggled with depression, I also bear scars in my heart from wounds I received in spiritual combat on the battlefields. There were days I fought valiantly and days I set weeping and did not fight at all. But I have learned that scars are evidence that you were wounded but that you also survived. I am still in the battle, and I hope that by the grace of God, I am wiser and much more strategic in my warfare against this particular attack that the enemy often thrives in. I still do not win every battle, but I am learning, and I have not given up. As you read these pages, my prayer for you is that you find strength and a God-given determination not to give up either. Victory is mine, saith the Lord, and you are not alone. Look up, my friend, and take heart. We are more than conquers in Christ and our redemption draweth nigh.
Key to African studies is understanding the knowledge systems of the continent and her diaspora. The representation and understanding of Africa are dependent on the observer’s definition of knowledge. Afrocentric knowledge is comprised of a collection of political, religious, and indigenous belief systems. Religious Beliefs and Knowledge Systems in Africa begins with deconstructing the Western philosophy of knowledge before defining and exploring the epistemic disciplines of Africa. It transcends postcolonial critique, through an Afrocentric approach to knowledge divided into three key themes. The first of these is the African worldview, exploring knowledge through eldership, witchcraft, and divination. This is followed up by kingship ideology and epistemologies, exploring discussing how politics, religion, and belief shape African society. Finally, the world religion chapter examines Christianity, Islam, and Pentecostalism in their impact on African ways of knowing. This book calls to action new fields of study in universities, encouraging a greater understanding of African ways of knowing through more nuanced disciplines.
