This volume brings together several years of work devoted to the wider landscape of the Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site. It documents the results of a programme of geophysical and related survey across an area of c. 285 hectares between Skara Brae on the west Orkney coast and Maeshowe, by the Loch of Stenness. The project has made it possible to talk for the first time about the landscape context of some of the most remarkable and renowned prehistoric monuments in Western Europe. The aims are to synthesise the data from different forms of survey and to document the changing character and development of this landscape over time. The results are genuinely remarkable are presented in a manner which makes the material of interest and value to a relatively wide readership, with an array of images which fully document and interpret the evidence. Survey work at a landscape scale tends to deal with palimpsests. Here descriptive sections are set within a thematic structure designed to explore the changing use and significance of different areas over time. The results shed important new light on the character and extent of known prehistoric sites and ceremonial monuments. But they also document the afterlives of these and other places and their relation to the lived landscapes of the historic and more recent past. In tracing the changing configuration of the World Heritage Area, we can begin appreciate this landscape as an artefact of several millennia of dwelling, working land, attending to wider worlds and to the past itself.

This is the story of Nick A. Flores who was captured during the first battle at Hell Fire Valley, a few miles from Chosin Reservoir. He served 36 months as a POW at Camp One in Chong-sung, Korea. While a POW, Nick nursed nineteen POWs, brought in by the North Korean Army, and saved thirteen by spoon-feeding, bathing, listening and comforting them -- a task that no one else wanted or would do. He gave his food to fellow POWs and hand made moccasins for those soldiers with frost bitten feet. During repatriation at Freedom Village, General McCall Pate, commander of the 1st Marine Division, was so impressed by words spoken about Nick that he summoned Nick over to sit next to him. It was at this time General Pate told Nick, "I know that our country will give you the highest honor that you could receive for your heroism while a POW". After returning home, Nick began yet another battle that lasted for forty years. He was driven with determination to write a book about his life, events and often times painful memories he endured while in the hands of the Chinese Peoples' Army and his homeland tragedies.

Porcupine Tree began in 1987 as a solo project for Steven Wilson but became a four-piece band when Steven was later joined by Richard Barbieri, Colin Edwin, and Chris Maitland (who was later replaced by Gavin Harrison). Their first live gig was in a pub in High Wycombe, England, in 1993, but by 2010 the band had toured Europe and America extensively, ending up by playing to thousands of fans at a sold-out Royal Albert Hall in London. The band was nominated for two Grammy awards, and their last album, The Incident, made the top 30 in both the UK and the US. Although often labelled as a progressive rock band, Porcupine Tree constantly changed style. Beginning by playing psychedelic music, Porcupine Tree experimented with space rock, dance, trance and melodic pop as well as prog rock. In their last few albums, the band created a new hybrid of progressive metal riffs, melodic strength and rich vocal harmonies, with strong lyrics and powerful concepts. This aspect of the band has provided their most enduring legacy. This book analyses all Porcupine Tree’s studio albums and EPs in forensic detail, providing illuminating insight into the band’s music for existing and new fans alike.
