This fifth volume of Research Methods in Neurochemistry represents a milestone in that it marks almost a decade since the inception of the series. Over these ten years there has been an almost exponential growth in neuro chemistry accompanied by numerous technical developments. This is the justification for our series; inevitably we have only been able to cover a frac tion of the methodological innovations of the last decade, but we have tried as much as possible to create a balance between the different approaches and philosophies in the study of the chemical basis of brain function. Thus our original format of grouping chapters under various headings-for instance, studies in intact tissues as distinct from studies describing constituents and isolated enzymes-appears to be justified. Studies on whole animals or tissues retaining cellular organization are vital in providing insights into the neurochemical mechanism underlying functional processes; at the same time, the eventual understanding of function can only be attained on the basis of knowledge of the molecular architecture of the tissue. In the present volume, Oldendorfs chapter on the transport of radiolabeled metabolites across the blood-brain barrier illustrates one side of this equation, whereas Poduslo's chapter on the separation of oligo dendroglia! cells provides new information on the role of these cells in myelogenesis and the distinctive chemical composition of glia as compared to neurons.

Using the same techniques that show the deficiencies of delivery strategies involving antibodies, liposomes, and synthetic polymers, clear evidence is presented describing how microspheres of appropriate size can be localized in solid tumor deposits in the liver with little exposure to other organs. To exploit this phenomenon, the extent and nature of the incorporation of active agents within microspheres is discussed in relation to release, pharmacokinetics, and tumor response achieved by intensification of therapy in the manner described. This book will benefit laboratory-based scientists and clinicians in pharmaceutics, pharmacology, physiology, surgical oncology, and nuclear medicine. In addition, cancer clinicians interested in the value of regional therapy will be able to evaluate the underlying theory and learn the necessary methodology.

Religion in Late Modernity runs against the grain of common suppositions of contemporary theology and philosophy of religion. Against the common supposition that basic religious terms have no real reference but are mere functions of human need, the book presents a pragmatic theory of religious symbolism in terms of which the cognitive engagement of the Ultimate is of a piece with the cognitive engagement of nature and persons. Throughout this discussion, Neville develops a late-modern conception of God that is defensible in a global theological public. Against the common supposition that religion is on the retreat in late modernity except in fundamentalist forms, the author argues that religion in our time is a stimulus to religiously oriented scholarship, a civilizing force among world societies, a foundation for obligation in politics, a source for healthy social experimentation, and the most important mover of soul. Against the common supposition that religious thinking or theology is confessional and inevitably biased in favor of the thinker's community, Neville argues for the public character of theology, the need for history and phenomenology of religion in philosophy of religion, and the possibility of objectivity through the contextualization of philosophy, contrary to the fashionable claims of neo-pragmatism. This vigorous analysis and program for religious thinking is straightforwardly pro-late-modern and anti-postmodern, a rousing gallop along the high road around modernism.

In a familial disorder that can cause psychosis that is comorbid with physical symptoms of various metabolic disorders, evidence is presented which indicates that the metabolic derangement in the disorder likely centers on the hypofunction of SAR1B mediated COP2 transport, and the consequential hyperfunction of SAR1B/COP2 autophagy. This metabolic derangement has significant links to five genetic locations, three of which were previously reported on in the disorder - 5q31.1, 17p11.2 and 17p13.1. It is noted that a complete or partial failure of the PI3K product PI3P, or of PI4KA dependent PI4P, to bind with SEC23IP, as part of the COP2 transport process, would be almost entirely consistent with and provide a complete explanation for the presentation of this familial disorder.
