Treasure Neverland is about factual and fictional pirates. Swashbuckling eighteenth-century pirates were the ideal pirates of all time and tales of their exploits are still popular today. Most people have heard of Blackbeard and Captain Kidd even though they lived about three hundred years ago, but most have also heard of other pirates, such as Long John Silver and Captain Hook, even though these pirates never lived at all, except in literature. The differences between these two types of pirates - real and imaginary - are not quite as stark as we might think as the real, historical pirates are themselves somewhat legendary, somewhat fictional, belonging on the page and the stage rather than on the high seas. Based on extensive research of fascninating primary material, including testimonials, narratives, legal statements, colonial and mercantile records, Neil Rennie describes the ascertainable facts of real eighteenth-century pirate lives and then investigates how such facts were subsequently transformed artistically, by writers like Defoe and Stevenson, into realistic and fantastic fictions of various kinds: historical novels, popular melodramas, boyish adventures, Hollywood films. Rennie's aim is to watch, in other words, the long dissolve from Captain Kidd to Johnny Depp. There are surprisingly few scholarly studies of the factual pirates - properly analysing the basic manuscript sources and separating those documents from popular legends - and there are even fewer literary-historical studies of the whole crew of fictional pirates, although those imaginary pirates form a distinct and coherent literary tradition. Treasure Neverland is a study of this Scots-American literary tradition and also of the interrelations between the factual and fictional pirates - pirates who are intimately related, as the nineteenth-century writings about fictional pirates began with the eighteenth-century writings about supposedly real pirates. 'What I want is the best book about the Buccaneers', wrote Stevenson when he began Treasure Island in 1881. What he received, rightly, was indeed the best book: the sensational and unreliable History of the Pyrates (1724).

Lastly, the text explains that the numerous applications of thermoplastic structural composites, such as in medicine, aviation, marine and space technology, automotive, and industrial machinery, are all important and a rigorous evaluation is therefore necessary. The book finally suggests that the research into the future developments in the thermoplastic structural composites and the trend toward new design strategies and processing technology are important in optimizing the composite's great potential. Industrial researchers in the field of chemistry and polymer composites, students, and academicians interested in the design and application of polymer composites will find this book relevant.

This is the first historical monograph to demonstrate settler colonialism’s significance for Early America. Based on a nuanced reading of the archive and using a comparative approach, the book treats settler colonialism as a process rather than a coherent ideology. Spady shows that learning was a central site of colonial struggle in the South, in which Native Americans, Africans, and European settlers acquired and exploited each other’s knowledge and practices. Learned skills, attitudes, and ideas shaped the economy and culture of the region and produced challenges to colonial authority. Factions of enslaved people and of Native American communities devised new survival and resistance strategies. Their successful learning challenged settler projects and desires, and white settlers gradually responded. Three developments arose as a pattern of racialization: settlers tried to prohibit literacy for the enslaved, remove indigenous communities, and initiate some of North America's earliest schools for poorer whites. Fully instituted by the end of the 1820s, settler colonization’s racialization of learning in the South endured beyond the Civil War and Reconstruction.

Over 170 case vignettes illustrate a variety of interactions (DDIs) to provide an unintimidating -- even entertaining -- approach to understanding these issues. Drug-Drug Interaction Primer builds on the author's earlier work, Drug Interactions Casebook: The Cytochrome P450 System and Beyond, and features updated references throughout and 29 new cases that provide such clinical examples as: a patient diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder transitions from haloperidol to aripiprazole with disastrous results; an AIDS patient's trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole is replaced with warfarin following atrial fibrillation, resulting in ischemic stroke; and a delusional patient on risperidone is placed on phenytoin following seizures, and delusions return. Previous cases have been revised to enhance clarity. An introduction to core concepts, which includes brief reviews of each enzyme system, brings the reader up to speed on how to think about DDIs and begin to grapple with what might seem like an imposing subject. The vignettes that follow each include a case presentation and an explanation of the mechanism by which the interaction(s) occurred, and each derives from sound clinical evidence -- not merely extrapolations from drug characteristics -- to offer a more realistic understanding of DDIs. Most of the interactions described involve the cytochrome P450 enzyme system; others involve alterations in phase II metabolism and P-glycoprotein functioning, as well as plasma protein displacement effects. The appendices detail most drug-drug interactions between psychotropic agents and contain metabolic pathways and inhibitory and inductive profiles for antidepressants, antipsychotics, and mood stabilizing agents -- as well as tables that detail all known and clinically significant DDIs between pairings of any two agents from these drug classes. An extensive index allows quick reference. Among the book's other features: Reorganization by medical subspecialty -- psychiatry, internal medicine, neurology, surgery/anesthesia, and gynecology, oncology, and dermatology -- better facilitates clinical application. Comprehensive tables detail substrates, inhibitors, and inducers for P450, phase II, and P-glycoprotein. DDIs involving select nonpsychotropic agents such as tobacco, ethinylestradiol, and statins. Exploration of the paradigm of plasma protein binding mediated DDIs in detail, with cases conveniently indexed. These cases bring DDIs alive in a way that drier descriptions cannot, and this volume introduces more original material than will be found in other sources. Drug-Drug Interaction Primer is brimming with material that can be put to immediate use, offering insights that will improve any practitioner's skills.
