This book is based on the true story of Jonathan Ned Cole, a deaf adopted son of Mary Carol Cole and Ned M Cole. Much of the story is factually about Jon’s rather tragic life. Some of the story about his biological parents are works of my imagination. Jon never knew who his biological parents were. Other parts are dramatized to better portray who Jon was, a black, deaf boy raised in an all-white family. The last chapter is about Jon’s time in Heaven and of course is from my imagination. Thinking of Jon being in Heaven helps me to deal with my grief over losing him. The story is told in the first person as though Jon were narrating the story himself. Some of what Jon tells you might make you laugh. Other parts will cause your eyes to well up in tears. As you listen to Jon tell his story you will discover that deafness is a far greater burden to carry than being a black person in mostly white America. This story is one which with the author struggled for many years to find the words that would do justice to the extraordinary silence that Jon lived with during all of his short 26 years of life. This story is about the joy of living and the grief a family feels when a child is lost to them far too early. Yet this story in the end is about hope. As Jon would have it, his “real” father and mother make their home in Melbourne, Florida.
This book is about the story of the Cole family and their parts—some big, some small—in making America the great nation it is today. The Cole family migrated from the British Isles, Northern Ireland and Ireland, in the 1600s. They settled in New England and later migrated westward. Early Coles fought in the Revolutionary War. Later ones fought in the Civil War. Ned M. Cole Jr. enlisted in the United States Air Force and retired as a colonel from the New York Air National Guard. His son joined the Illinois Army National Guard and, after a few years, was commissioned. His grandson, Jeffrey A. Reilly, was commissioned in the United States Marine Corps. Captain Jeff Reilly fought in Afghanistan. After leaving active duty but remaining in the Air National Guard, Ned went on to a successful business career. His family had lost their fortune in 1918, due to eminent domain action by the United States government. Ned became one of the principal owners of ABC Rail Corporation. He was able to restore some of the family’s lost fortune. Ned and his wife of nearly fifty-eight years, Carol, made their home in Melbourne, Florida.

John Lewis Benson, born in Crawford County, Pennsylvania, was an 8th generation descendant of John Benson, who arrived in America at Plymouth Colony on 11 April 1638 on the ship "Confidence." After being reared in Chautauqua County, New York, John Lewis Benson's father, William, took him to Rock Island County, Illinois, following his daughters who had already made the migration. Shortly after reaching his majority, John Lewis Benson went to "Bleeding Kansas" as part of the wave of Abolitionists who sought to "keep Kansas free," which action reflected the devout Puritan Calvinism of his Benson forebears. He enlisted in the 5th Kansas Volunteer Cavalry two months after the first canon was fired on Fort Sumter, and served until the end of the War of Rebellion, being mustered out on 22 June 1865. He then returned to Kansas where he prospered, married, and fathered 5 children. He lost all his worldly possessions due to drought and the economic collapse following The Panic of 1873, and then moved about Kansas seeking a new start. During this difficult period, his wife died, leaving him a widower with 4 children ages 6 to 11. He soon married a divorcee who brought her 3 children, ages 1 to 3, to the marriage. In his second marriage, John Lewis fathered three more children. After the Unassigned Lands of Oklahoma Territory were opened for settlement in 1899, John Lewis and his blended family moved there and share-cropped 40 acres southeast of Guthrie, Oklahoma, which he eventually bought. He died on this farm on 23 March 1906. This book by one of his great-grandsons tells the story of his life, the lives of his five sisters and one brother, and their ancestry back to 16th century Oxfordshire, England.

Grey Ghost is the story of a professional soldier’s struggle for survival and freedom during the cataclysm of war in the World War II European Theater of Operations between mid-1943 and mid-1945, as well as his continued exposure to combat in the Korean Conflict. This story carries the reader through the beginnings of war for America and onto the frontlines of aerial combat in a B-17 Flying Fortress with Sergeant Frank Grey and his crew. It delivers the reader into the hands of the enemy—Nazi Germany—and onto the long, painful journey of captivity of prisoners of war. For Sergeant Grey, the path from captivity to freedom would take numerous unpredictable twists over a period of almost two years, eventually leading him into Yugoslavia to fight with guerilla units under the leadership of General Draja Mihailovich, and finally to freedom in late May of 1945. This volume brings together the recent essays of Richard Ned Lebow, one of the leading scholars of international relations and US foreign policy. Lebow's work has centred on the instrumental value of ethics in foreign policy decision making and the disastrous consequences which follow when ethical standards are flouted. Unlike most realists who have considered ethical considerations irrelevant in states' calculations of their national interest, Lebow has argued that self interest, and hence, national interest can only be formulated intelligently within a language of justice and morality. We are multiple, fragmented, and changing selves who, nevertheless, believe we have unique and consistent identities. What accounts for this illusion? Why has the problem of identity become so central in post-war scholarship, fiction, and the media? In 1768, Jacob Kimball moved to the shores of Long Lake in North Bridgton, building a store and providing boat service from Standish, at the southern end of Sebago Lake. Jacob Stevens soon followed, building a sawmill and gristmill on what became Stevens Brook in the center village. Ten power sites on this short brook ran lumber, textile, and other mills, as well as a tannery. Bridgton became the areas commercial center as retail stores and businesses sprang up to support the many mill workers and farm families. The first train on the narrow-gauge Bridgton and Saco River Railroad chugged into town in January 1883. Tourists and artists soon discovered Bridgton, and today the town remains a diverse mix of creative, hardworking people.
Although female communication networks abound in many contexts and have received a good measure of critical scrutiny, no study has addressed their unique significance within narrative culture writ large. The vibrant Swahili coast port city of Dar es Salaam—literally, the “Haven of Peace”—hosts a population reflecting a legacy of long relations with the Arabian Peninsula and a diaspora emanating in waves from the Indian subcontinent. By the 1960s, after decades of European imperial intrusions, Tanzanian nationalist forces had peacefully dismantled the last British colonial structures of racial segregation and put in place an official philosophy of nonracial nationalism. Yet today, more than five decades after independence, race is still a prominent and publicly contested subject in Dar es Salaam. What makes this issue so dizzyingly elusive—for government bureaucrats and ordinary people alike—is East Africa’s location on the Indian Ocean, a historic crossroads of diverse peoples possessing varied ideas about how to reconcile human difference, social belonging, and place of origin. Based on a range of archival, oral, and newspaper sources from Tanzania and India, this book explores the history of cross-cultural encounters that shaped regional ideas of diaspora and nationhood from the earliest days of colonial Tanganyika—when Indian settlement began to expand dramatically—to present-day Tanzania, a nation always under construction. The book focuses primarily on two prominent city spaces, schools and cinemas: the one a site of education, the other a site of leisure; one typically a programmatic entity of government, the other usually a bastion of commercial enterprise. Nonetheless, the forces shaping schools and cinemas as they developed into busy centers of urban social interaction were surprisingly similar: the state, community organizations, nationalist movements, economic change, and the transnational winds of Indian Ocean culture and capital. Whether in the form of institutional apparatuses like networks of Indian teacher importation and curricula adoption, or through the market predominance of the Indian film industry, schools and cinemas in East Africa historically were influenced by actions and ideas from around the Indian Ocean. Diaspora and Nation in the Indian Ocean argues that an Indian Ocean–wide perspective enables an examination of the transnational production of ideas about race against a backdrop of changing relationships and claims of belonging as new notions of nationhood and diaspora emerged. It bridges an academic divide, because historians often either focus on the Indian diaspora in isolation or write it out of the story of African nation building. Further, in contrast to the swell of publications on global Indian or South Asian diasporas that highlight longings for and contacts with the “homeland,” the book also demonstrates that much of the creative production of diasporic Indian identities formed in East Africa was a result of local (albeit cosmopolitan) encounters across cities like Dar es Salaam.
