TRB’s National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Web-Only Document 188: Survey of State Funding for Public Transportationâ€"Ways to Improve It includes suggestions on ways to potentially improve the Survey of State Funding for Public Transportation. Areas covered by the report include definition of major terms, post-submission data checks, improved accessibility, non-transit related ferry funding, and overall data collection. The Survey of State Funding for Public Transportation report, which is prepared under the auspices of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and the American Public Transit Association, includes information on state-level public transportation funding, the source of funds, the potential use of funds, and the method of funding distribution for each transit program.

Urges the formation of the Strategic Forum for Innovation in Highway Infrastructure, whose central mission would be to identify and effect positive change in the fundamental opportunities and incentives for innovation in products and services for the highway system. This report discusses the mission of the Forum, membership and participation, organization and support, related initiatives, steps to launch the Forum, and issues and opportunities for the Forum.
The conference provided an opportunity for participants to (a) identify the types of data that are critical for planning and policy analysis; (b) identify data-collection requirements; (c) discuss the appropriate roles of and relationships among federal, state, and local agencies in the context of data collection and dissemination; and (d) review the impact of technological advances on data collection and dissemination. The invitation-only conference included participants from state departments of transportation (DOTs), metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs), and federal agencies providing broad representation of the transportation planning and policy communities. Significant effort was made to include a full spectrum of policy, management, and front-line analysts who have extensive experience in answering policy questions, supporting the planning process, and responding to federal reporting requirements.
The Transportation Research Board's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 312: Facilitating Partnerships in Transportation Research examines key factors facilitating transportation research partnerships, and presents approaches for producing synergies beneficial to research programs.
