In the year 1218 A.D., Khwarazm was a flourishing kingdom of culture, trade and wealth. Not even the neighboring empire of the Abbasid Caliphate could challenge it. Through its lands pass the routes of the legendary Silk Road where the great cities of Samarkand and Bokhara thrived. Over this mighty kingdom ruled the Shah Mohammed, Sultan Ala ad Deen and his Queen Mother, Terken Qatun. From their palace at Afrasiab in the city of Samarkand, the Sultan, his Queen Mother and two children, the Princess Aisha and Prince Jalal, spent their days in luxury and culture. Days that were fated to change. Greed and arrogance, jealousy and fear invariably lead to lapses in judgment or perhaps, clarity of mind. Whatever the reasons, distinct but related events ignite a powderkeg that brings the hordes of Cinggis Qan like a jada out of the high steppes of Central Asia. Soon, the beautiful Princess Aisha, her love, Qafar of the Shahs Imperial Guard and her brother, Prince Jalal find themselves swept up in a whirlpool of blood and intrigue that threatens not only the love of the Princess and Qafar but the very survival of the kingdom of Khwarazm as well.
It is the year 2027AD and in the city of Beirut, Lebanon, a man, his wife, and two children are assassinated in twin explosions. the assassinations are the latest in a series of killings spanning a period of two years and show no signs of abating. Hundreds of miles away in the ancient city of Samarkand, a jihadist command cell summons its members after learning of the latest incident. Who is behind these terrorist acts? What do they want? For what reasons? Though the answers are not obvious, Qutuz Sayfullah, leader of the command cell, believes they are the next targets. He has a theory that lies rooted in Mongol antiquity and a legend that has lived on for centuries. So begins a dire quest for Qutuz and his companions to stop these assassinations of jihadist leaders and their families. A quest which takes them into the den of the Blue Wolf--Mongolia, once a mighty empire stretching from the Sea of Japan to the gilded doors of Vienna. An empire that nearly erased Islam from the face of the earth. For Qutuz and his followers, the quest is one of life or death. For an American treasure hunter, Charlie Freedman--seeker of the tomb of the great Chinggis Qan--it is a matter of fame and fortune. For the Mongol peoples, it is the promise of a return to a glorious future and a prominent place on the world stage. And for Mongolias newly elected President, Temujin, it is a calling of time and destiny.
The story of Cinggis Qan and his Mongols following the destruction of the kingdom of Khwarazm and the flight of what is left of the royal family. Under the leadership of Cinggis Qan's eldest son and his general the Mongols ride north into the lands of the Kangli Turks, the Kama Bulgars and the Orusud.
I ask of you: by what measure- ment is the value of a mans life determined? Is it how much wealth he has accumulated? Or how many wives and children? Perhaps it is how large the land over which he rules and how many peoples reside in those lands. Or how many he may call nokor (friend) to whom he would give his life or their own. If these are the measures of the value of a mans life, is it enough to have only one or two, or must a man possess all for others to say of himhis life is truly valued? Often have I pondered the question. Perhaps, like beauty, the value of a mans life remains in the eye of the beholder. A farmer who tills the soil and produces food for others may be said to have a life of great value for what he does sustains others. Even more so than the nobleman who owns vast tracts of land yet produces nothing for others unless the nobleman has brought to those who depend upon him prosperity, health, and peace as opposed to fear, disease, and poverty. Does the value of a mans life even matter in the great heaven of things?
