He had to live up to these high standards constantly. Things turned sour for him towards the end of his primary school as he struggled with vision problems. He moved into a new school in desperation. He then experienced the big disappointment of his lifea test that he struggled to contend with. This is a story of determination, hope, perseverance, the power of love, and faith in God in overcoming the prevailing challenges and circumstances at various stages, even in a life of a young child. Expect some thrills and suspense as you follow through the moments that shaped his life at home, at school, and outside school to the very end of his primary school.
ONCE UPON DECADES or so ago life was hard and desperate under the British colonial yoke. This is the tale of a subject from that system of exploitation who escaped in one of the numerous ocean-liners which bailed out souls young to old who were similarly caught up by the hopelessness that prevailed then. Thousands of individuals and families from what was the British Commonwealth of colonials, who had the necessary one-way fare, chased similar opportunities. Some fell by the way, others lost touch with their past and I among others returned to tell my tale!

This study of the political history of Mesopotamia – today’s Iraq and Syria – in the Old Babylonian period (ca. 2000-1600 BCE) is the first comprehensive historical synthesis of this kind published in English after many decades. Based on numerous written sources in Sumerian and Akkadian – royal inscriptions, letters, law collections, economic records, etc. – and on up-to-date research, it presents the region’s political history in a meticulous geographic and chronological manner. This allows the interested academic and non-academic reader an in-depth view into the scene of ancient Mesopotamia ruled by competing dynasties of West Semitic (Amorite) origin, with a complex web of political and tribal connections between them.

This volume examines the place of Islam in Ghanaian society, with particular attention to the role of the dominant orthodox' Tijyniyya tradition, and its relation to newer groups which have become increasingly prominent since 1950. These are characterized as part of a Muslim resurgence'. The two groups given particular attention are the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission (Amm) and the Ahlus Sunna wal-Jama'a. Nathan Samwini holds a doctoral degree in philosophy from the University of Birmingham (UK) and is ordained minister of the Methodist Church in Ghana.

Exploring the formation, evolution and effectiveness of the regional security arrangements of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), Nathan examines a number of vital and troubling questions: * why has SADC struggled to establish a viable security regime? * why has it been unable to engage in successful peacemaking?, and * why has it defied the optimistic prognosis in the early 1990s that it would build a security community in Southern Africa? He argues that the answers to these questions lie in the absence of common values among member states, the weakness of these states and their unwillingness to surrender sovereignty to the regional organization. Paradoxically, the challenge of building a co-operative security regime lies more at the national level than at the regional level. The author's perspective is based on a unique mix of insider access, analytical rigour and accessible theory.
Ennobling Japan’s Savage Northeast is the first comprehensive account in English of the discursive life of the Tōhoku region in postwar Japan from 1945 through 2011. The Northeast became the subject of world attention with the March 2011 triple disaster of earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear meltdown. But Tōhoku’s history and significance to emic understandings of Japanese self and nationhood remain poorly understood. When Japan embarked on its quest to modernize in the mid-nineteenth century, historical prejudice, contemporary politics, and economic calculation together led the state to marginalize Tōhoku, creating a “backward” region in both fact and image. After 1945, a group of mostly local intellectuals attempted to overcome this image and rehabilitate the Northeast as a source of new national values. This early postwar Tōhoku recuperation movement has proved to be a critical source for the new Kyoto school’s neoconservative valorization of native Japanese identity, fueling that group’s antimodern, anti-Western discourse since the 1980s.Nathan Hopson unravels the contested postwar meanings of Tōhoku to reveal the complex and contradictory ways in which that region has been incorporated into Japan’s shifting self-images since World War II.
The primary purpose of this book is to offer a broad-based examination into the role of scientific inquiry in contemporary special education. As with the first two editions, which were published in 2001 and 2011, the goal is to provide a comprehensive overview of the philosophical, ethical, methodological, and analytical fundamentals of social science and educational research. Aspects of special education research that distinguish it from scientific inquiry in other fields of education and human services are specified. Foremost among these distinctions are the research beneficiaries—children with disabilities, their parents, the special educators; availability of federal funds for research and demonstration projects that seek to improve educational outcomes; and the historical, philosophical, and legislative bases for the profession of special education. This new edition represents a revision of more than 30 percent with over 250 new references. Each chapter is thoroughly updated with new developments in research topics, designs, and methods that have emerged over the past decade in the field of special education. This unique book is an excellent resource guide for graduate-level students, practitioners, teachers in the field of special education, disability studies, early intervention, school psychology, and child and family services.
