Dialectics without Synthesis explores Japan’s active but previously unrecognized participation in the global circulation of film theory during the first half of the twentieth century. Examining a variety of Japanese theorists working in the fields of film, literature, avant-garde art, Marxism, and philosophy, Naoki Yamamoto offers a new approach to cinematic realism as culturally conditioned articulations of the shifting relationship of film to the experience of modernity. In this study, long-held oppositions between realism and modernism, universalism and particularism, and most notably, the West and the non-West are challenged through a radical reconfiguration of the geopolitics of knowledge production and consumption.
This collection of nine papers brings together Naoki Fukui’s pioneering body of work on Merge, the basic operation of human language syntax, from the two distinct but related perspectives of theoretical syntax and neurosciences. Part I presents an overview of the development of the theory of Merge and its current formulations in linguistic theory, highlighting the author’s previously published papers in theoretical syntax, while Part II focuses on experimental research on Merge in the brain science of language, demonstrating how new techniques and the results they produce can inform the study of syntactic structures in the brain in the future. By combining insights from theoretical linguistics and neurosciences, this book presents an innovative unified account of the study of Merge and paves new directions for future research for graduate students and scholars in theoretical linguistics, neuroscience, syntax, and cognitive science.
This book re-examines the endosymbiotic theory, and presents various related theories and hypotheses since the first proposal in 1905 by a Russian biologist. It also demonstrates that Lynn Margulis’s contribution to the current endosymbiotic is less than sometimes thought, and presents a plausible idea on how the organelles were formed. Explaining that Margulis’s initial work did not intend to show the endosymbiotic origin of chloroplasts and mitochondria, the book discusses their endosymbiotic origin in the light of current biology with the help of clear visual images. Further, by including numerous historical facts and details of phylogenetic analyses using recent genomic data that are largely unknown to many in the field, it offers deep insights into the history of biology, phylogenetic analysis, and the new evolutionary thinking. 2017 was the 50-year anniversary of Margulis’s first paper in the Journal of Theoretical Biology, and 2020 will mark 50 years since the publication her famous work Origin of Eukaryotic Cells, and as such this book offers a timely reconsideration ofthe works of Lynn Margulis and the endosymbiotic origin of organelles.
Traces the life of the Japanese author who went from sickly youth to dedicated student of the martial arts, looking at his family life, the wartime years, and his career as a writer who advocated for traditional values.
After discovering the inhumane Berserker production, Yotsuya hoped to reveal this secret to the Sotagan government and force it to take action against the oppressive nation of Ahtunu. How convenient, then, that he runs into Sotagan forces already in Ahtunu. This should be great news. It's exactly what Yotsuya needs to finish the latest quest, but there's something off about the Sotagan warriors. They seem to be more interested in killing than liberating…
Shinohara and co-authors present a comprehensive and in-depth discussion of all current wireless power transfer (WPT) methods and meet the growing need for a detailed understanding of the advantages, disadvantages, and applications of each method. WPT is a game-changing technology, not only for IoT networks and sensors, but also for mobile chargers, long-flying drones, solar-powered satellites, and more, and the list of potential applications will continue to grow. Each author’s chapter is based on a minimum of 13 years and a maximum of over 30 years of research experience on selected WPT technologies to explain the theory and advantages and disadvantages of this to various applications. The book provides an insight into WPT theories and technologies, including inductive coupling for short-distance WPT, radio waves for long-distance WPT, optical WPT using lasers, supersonic WPT in water, and more. The characteristics of each WPT method are compared theoretically and technically. The differences of each WPT method are explained with reference to the different theories, techniques, and suitable applications. The reader will gain an understanding of the recent and future commercial market and regulations regarding WPT. They will be able to apply this knowledge to select the appropriate WPT method for their desired application. This book is appropriate for students, WPT researchers, and engineers in industry who are developing WPT applications.
Symmetrizing Syntax seeks to establish a minimal and natural characterization of the structure of human language (syntax), simplifying many facets of it that have been redundantly or asymmetrically formulated. Virtually all past theories of natural language syntax, from the traditional X-bar theory to the contemporary system of Merge and labeling, stipulate that every phrase structure is "asymmetrically" organized, so that one of its elements is always marked as primary/dominant over the others, or each and every phrase is labeled by a designated lexical element. The two authors call this traditional stipulation into question and hypothesize, instead, that linguistic derivations are essentially driven by the need to reduce asymmetry and generate symmetric structures. Various linguistic notions such as Merge, cyclic derivation by phase, feature-checking, morphological agreement, labeling, movement, and criterial freezing, as well as parametric differences among languages like English and Japanese, and so on, are all shown to follow from a particular notion of structural symmetry. These results constitute novel support for the contemporary thesis that human language is essentially an instance of a physical/biological object, and its design is governed by the laws of nature, at the core of which lies the fundamental principle of symmetry. Providing insights into new technical concepts in syntax, the volume is written for academics in linguistics but will also be accessible to linguistics students seeking an introduction to syntax.

Seven years have passed since the massacre at the village took place, and although the Tosu family has once again found peace and joy in their lives, Shino and Kubo are still on the run. So when Tetsuo finds himself being framed for murder alongside whispers of Kubo's return, he begins to suspect his past has come back to haunt him. As Tetsuo braces for a rematch with Kubo, Reika, now a police investigator, defies orders by hunting for answers after an attack on her family hits too close to home.
This monograph assimilates new research in the field of low-dimensional metals. It provides a detailed overview of the current status of research on quasi-one- and two-dimensional molecular metals, describing normal-state properties, magnetic field effects, superconductivity, and the phenomena of interacting p and d electrons. It includes a number of findings likely to become standard material in future textbooks on solid-state physics.
Fluidity of Place presents an interdisciplinary conversation with theories of space-time, place, and globalization at the cutting edge of social theory. Focusing on the construction of urban space in the context of hyper-mobility, it examines the social relations that form 'place' in a globalized world. The first half of the book discusses globalization theory and looks at place in relation to the fluidity brought about by recent technological advances. The second half details the construction of understandings of Asian mega-cities, particularly Jakarta, and examines the realities behind narratives of over-urbanization in light of globalization and the concomitant fluidity of place. The book makes a compelling argument about the competing claims to place in a world where the nation-state has lost control of its borders.

This book introduces vibronic coupling density and vibronic coupling constant analyses as a way to understand molecular structure and chemical reactions. After quantum study, the behavior of electrons circulating around nuclei led to the principal concept that underlies all explanations in chemistry. Many textbooks have given plausible explanations to clarify molecular structure—for example, the bond elongation of ethylene under anionization and the nonplanar structure of ammonia. Frontier molecular orbital concepts were proposed to visualize the path of chemical reactions, and conventional explanations gave students a familiarity with molecular structures in terms of the electronic state. By contrast, this book offers a more rational and more convincing path to understanding. It starts from the ab initio molecular Hamiltonian and provides systematic, rational approaches to comprehend chemical phenomena. In this way, the book leads the reader to a grasp of the quantitative evaluation of the force applied under the molecular deformation process. As well, guidelines are offered for integrating the traditional “hand-waving” approach of chemistry with more rational and general VCD and VCC alternatives along with the outlook for newly functionalized chemical systems.
