An award-winning journalist and producer of This American Life traces the stories of five convicted murderers to assess their struggles for redemption, efforts toward parole and first steps in transitioning back to civilian life. 25,000 first printing.
Once a murderer, always a murderer? Or can a murderer be redeemed? Who do they really become after they have served decades in prison? What does it take for a killer to be accepted back into society? What is the chance that he will kill again? Award-winning journalist Nancy Mullane found herself facing these questions when she accepted an assignment to report on the exploding costs of incarceration. But the men she met behind the walls astonished her with their remorse, introspection, determination, and unshakable hope for freedom and forgiveness. Life After Murder is an intimately reported, utterly compelling story of five convicted murderers sentenced to life with the possibility of parole, who discover after decades in prison that their second chance, if it comes at all, is also the challenge of a lifetime. It follows their struggle for redemption, their legal battles to make good on the state's promise of parole, and the lives they found after so many years inside.
What do David Foster Wallace's essay on wars over usage and Pico Iyer's comma personification have to do with improving students' academic writing? Everything. For all of the attention supposedly paid to Bloom's Taxonomy-with creativity at the top-educators tend to shy away from encouraging students' creative choices in areas where traditional analysis and the critic's style and tone have reigned. While we do not want our students to write inane or empty verbiage, we unintentionally set them up for this inevitability--or worse. The movement away from children's natural creative impulses in elementary school to a direction in which they literally fit their writing into preconfigured shapes is a gradual one. Although purportedly taught to instill academic structures, these boxes are also designed to facilitate the ease with which student product may be assessed. We need a more creative approach to teaching writing. A methodology incorporating creativity, as modeled by students in this text, demonstrates the kind of progress we are all seeking, offering an exciting challenge for young writers and educators alike.
The second edition of Student Development in College offers higher education professionals a clear understanding of the developmental challenges facing today's college students. Thoroughly revised and updated, this edition includes new integrative theories of student development, expanded coverage of social identity theories, a targeted focus on higher education-related research, a current review of student development research and application, and reconceptualization of typology theories as a way to understand individual differences. Praise for the Second Edition of STUDENT DEVELOPMENT IN COLLEGE "Student Development in College is a rich, comprehensive exploration of the major theoretical perspectives that inform development. The authors' attention to nuances and complexities results in a substantive history of theory development and a careful story about how various perspectives evolved yielding contemporary theorizing. The book is a masterful blend of theoretical lenses and their use in designing developmentally appropriate practice for diverse populations of contemporary college students. It is an excellent resource for all educators who work on college campuses." Marcia Baxter Magolda, Distinguished Professor, Educational Leadership, Miami University "This is an invaluable work for anyone seeking an introduction to college student development theories or those seeking to update their existing knowledge. It offers a thorough and complex review of both the foundational theories and the newer often more culturally relevant theories and models." Raechele L. Pope, program coordinator, Higher Education Program, University at Buffalo "The original book was a tremendous contribution to the field of higher education and especially student affairs. After more than ten years, this revision is a timely and focused enhancement to the literature that nurtures quality professionals to think differently about topics relevant to our field. Well done a second time around!" Gregory Roberts, executive director, ACPA College Student Educators International
For over forty years Swami Chinmayananda was one of the leading interpreters and teachers of the Hindu philosophical system of Advaita Vedanta, which establishes with exact logic the identity of the self (Atman) with the infinite (Brahman). Through a variety of institutions and methods particularly the jñāna yajñas, rituals of truth, he worked to rejuvenate Hinduism by making hitherto inaccessible insights of the Upanishads and the Bhagavad - gita available to masses. Thereby, he was instrumental in bringing the wisdom of the Hindu heritage to everyone, regardless of caste, creed, gender, religion or nationality. This is the first biography of Swami Chinmayananda and retraces his journey from his childhood in Kerala, through his carefree college days and rebellion against British imperialism, then his spiritual tutelage under Swami Shivananda and Swami Tapovanam. An account is given detailing the growth of a worldwide movement under his guidance. Included are conversations with him on different subjects that demonstrate his sharp intellect, deep wisdom and quick wit. He is undoubtedly one of the outstanding and influential figures in the modern history of India.

To promote effectiveness and minimize possible toxicity, the dosage of certain medications must be adjusted in persons with compromised kidney function. Failure to enjoin appropriate dosage adjustments in patients with abnormal or rapidly changing kidney function continues to lead to reports of drug toxicity involving a broad array of renally eliminated medications. This updated edition captures nearly 200 new drugs that have been approved by the FDA since the initial publication of Renal Pharmacotherapy. It also covers new evidence that has emerged regarding the need to adjust dosage of certain older medications that are eliminated by the kidneys. Additionally, it presents new data that are being continuously derived in the areas of patient-specific dose individualization for drugs of all types. Comprehensive, convenient, and evidence-based, this reference closes several identified knowledge gaps and will continue to be the leading collection of dosage recommendations for patients with compromised kidney function.
My Nana was an Outrageously Mischievous kid. In the 1940s and '50s, children were allowed to run free, play outside, and use their imaginations-without parents constantly hovering over them and fearing for their safety. In her own small town in North Carolina-with very little traffic, and neighbors who actually knew each other-Nana was no exception to the free-range kid phenomenon. But as an outrageously mischievous child that was left to her own devices, she sure got into some amazing and hilarious adventures. It was a glorious time to be a child! Both of Nana's parents worked, so she and her brother were often unsupervised. They wreaked havoc most of the time, thus living an exciting childhood. Nana's stories-told to her great-grandchildren-are all true. She relates how her family and neighbors survived in spite of her and is quick to let her great-grandchildren know what not to do. As she says, if she had lived as a child today, she'd probably be locked up in a juvenile home!
An illustrated novel of the real world created by the acclaimed painter Nancy Chunn. Every day of 1966 Chunn claimed as an artistic canvas the front page of the N.Y. Times. Using rubber stamps and pastels to enhance, eradicate, and alter images and text, she created a commentary -- colorful, intense, visually explosive -- on the year's events and the power of the press. Chunn's treatment of the events we all lived through -- the Presidential campaign, the crash of TWA Flight 800, the wars in Chechnya and Rwanda -- will strike an immediate chord in readers tuned in to the political world awash in images and news. Gary Indiana's interview with the artist provides intimate insights into the artistic process as a means of talking back to power and engaging with the world.
