If there has been one theme in Nancy W. Brown’s life, it is enjoying where her outdoor adventures have carried her over the years. In this memoir, she celebrates her lifelong love of nature, beginning with her upbringing in the San Francisco Bay Area in the 1940s and 1950s. As a girl, she was introduced to the natural world. Her grandfather was a respected science teacher and photographer in Southern California, and he passed his talents down. Much of her time was spent outdoors with other children, including watching a neighbor chop chickens’ heads off on a chopping block and skin rabbits. She came to see this as normal (although scary, at first). With her parents, she spent vacations camping and exploring the Western states and seashores. As an adult, she gravitated to beautiful places—living and hiking in national parks, canoeing down rivers, and riding horses and mules in the backcountry of the Sierra Nevada and Arizona. Climb mountains, cross passes, and discover the great outdoors with recollections that soothe the soul in Married a Hiker, Got a Cowboy.

With Huckleberry Finn, American fiction changed radically and shifted its setting to the middle of the country. A focus on social issues replaced the philosophic and psychological explorations that dominated the work of Melville and Hawthorne. Colloquial speech rather than elevated language articulated these fresh ideas, while common folk rather than dramatic characters like Ahab and Hester Prynne played central roles. This transformation of American literature has been largely ignored, while during the 130 years since Huckleberry Finn the Midwest has continued to produce writers whose work, like Twain's, addresses injustice by portraying the decency of ordinary people. Since the end of the 19th century, Midwestern authors have dismissed the elite and celebrated those whom the power structure typically excludes: children, women, African-Americans and the lower classes. Instead of wealth and power, this literature values authenticity and compassion. The book explores this literary tradition by examining the work of 30 Midwestern writers including F. Scott Fitzgerald, Willa Cather, Ernest Hemingway, Richard Wright, Saul Bellow, Toni Morrison, Jonathan Franzen, Jane Smiley and Louise Erdrich.

Originally incorporated in 1886, the city of Sanger began as a watering station for the railroad. The Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway purchased land from Elizabeth Bullock Huling and laid tracks that went to Kansas City. Area ranchers could now ship their cattle to market rather than drive them up the Chisholm Trail, which lay a few miles to the west. Among the well-known people who called Sanger home were Marijohn Melson Wilkin and Perle Mesta. John Chisum had a ranch north of Bolivar. Additionally, local citizens such as Dr. Roma Alva King, an acknowledged scholar on Robert Browning; Lt. Gen. James F. Hollingsworth; and Fulbright scholar Dr. Diane Hughes Barentine received recognition. Sam Bass was a known outlaw who found a haven nearby. A 520-foot mural painted in 2008 at the southernmost exit of Interstate 35 illustrates bits of Sanger's past as well as its present.
