This book reveals the mechanism through which adults learn through boundary-crossing experiences. Boundary crossing, though defined in various ways, refers to activities in which persons belonging to different organizations collaborate in a context different from their workplace. While boundary crossing attracts researchers and practitioners as a platform for adult learning, previous analysis of its mechanism has been insufficient. To address this research gap, this text reviews literature on theories related to boundary crossing on an interdisciplinary basis, and empirically analyses the mechanism of learning through boundary crossing and associated job crafting. It also explains the concepts and techniques of the Modified-grounded theory approach (M-GTA) in order to facilitate easy understanding among researchers and practitioners in management and organization research. While job crafting is one of the research topics attracting a large number of researchers today, there is a lack of empirical studies on this topic. This book addresses cases in Japan where various experimental projects are in progress. However, noting the fact that the labor market and human resource management (HRM) practices in Japan are not as different from other countries as is usually said, its findings can be applied to other settings across the globe.

This open access book presents the findings from on-site research into radioactive cesium contamination in various agricultural systems affected by the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident in March 2011. This third volume in the series reports on studies undertaken at contaminated sites such as farmland, forests, and marine and freshwater environments, with a particular focus on livestock, wild plants and mushrooms, crops, and marine products in those environments. It also provides additional data collected in the subsequent years to show how the radioactivity levels in agricultural products and their growing environments have changed with time and the route by which radioactive materials entered agricultural products as well as their movement between different components (e.g., soil, water, and trees) within an environmental system (e.g., forests). The book covers various topics, including radioactivity testing of food products; decontamination trials for rice and livestock production; the state of contamination in, trees, mushrooms, and timber; the dynamics of radioactivity distribution in paddy fields and upland forests; damage incurred by the forestry and fishery industries; and the change in consumers' attitudes. Chapter 19 introduces a real-time radioisotope imaging system, a pioneering technique to visualize the movement of cesium in soil and in plants. This is the only book to provide systematic data on the actual change of radioactivity, and as such is of great value to all researchers who wish to understand the effect of radioactive fallout on agriculture. In addition, it helps the general public to better understand the issues of radio-contamination in the environment. General Ne Win's state reformation in the name of the "Burmese Way to Socialism" contributed to the expansion of the political role of the Myanmar Armed Forces, the tatmadaw, but the underlying dynamics of this change remain poorly understood. Drawing on propaganda publications, profiles of the country's political elites, and original documents in Burma's military archives, Yoshihiro Nakanishi offers a fresh look at the involvement of the tatmadaw in Burma's ideological discourse and civil-military relations. The tatmadaw's anti-communist propaganda during the 1950s was a key element in state ideology under the Ne Win regime, and the direct participation of tatmadaw officers in the Burma Socialist Programme Party and government ministries at the national and local level transformed the political party system and civilian bureaucracy. Personal relationships -- between Ne Win and the tatmadaw officer corps, and within the military -- were central to the growing influence of the military, and to the outcome of the political crisis and subsequent military coup d'état in 1988. Nakanishi's discussion of these processes reveals many heretofore-unknown facts about this "dark age" in the country's political history, and highlights its institutional legacy for the post-1988 military regime and the reformist government that succeeded it. This open access book is only an introduction to show that radiation and radioisotopes (RI) are premier tools to study living plant physiology which leads to new findings. Who had ever imagined that we could see water in a plant? Who had ever imagined that we could see ions moving toward roots in solution? Who had ever imagined that we could see invisible gas (CO2) fixation and movement in a plant? These studies demonstrated for the first time that water, ions and gas can be visualized in living plants, which could be hardly seen by anyone before. This publication summarizes the results obtained by Nakanishi’s lab in The Univ. of Tokyo, based on her original concept and her original tools or systems. It is useful for professional scientists, plant physiologist, and those studying plant imaging. The chapters demonstrates the innovative imaging work of the author, using radioactive tracers and neutron beam to follow the absorption and transport manner of water as well as major, minor, and trace elements in plants. Through these studies the author developed a real-time macroscopic and microscopic imaging system able to apply commercially available gamma- and beta-ray emitters. The real-time movement of the elements is now possible by using 14C, 18F, 22Na, 28Mg, 32P, 33P, 35S, 42K, 45Ca, 48V, 54Mn, 55Fe, 59Fe, 65Zn, 86Rb, 109Cd, and 137Cs. The imaging methods was applied to study the effect of 137Cs following 3/11 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant accident, which has revealed the movements of radiocesium in the contaminated sites.

This book investigates the semantics and syntax-semantics interface of measurement constructions, such as (non-)split quantifiers and comparatives. The cross-linguistic investigation reveals that seemingly diverse constructions can be categorized into two classes depending on whether they measure nominal or verbal predicates, and shows that the classification accounts for why certain constructions have certain characteristics concerning distributivity and single-event predicates. Throughout the book, particular emphasis is placed on issues of compositionality.

The notion of an invariant manifold arises naturally in the asymptotic stability analysis of stationary or standing wave solutions of unstable dispersive Hamiltonian evolution equations such as the focusing semilinear Klein-Gordon and Schrodinger equations. This is due to the fact that the linearized operators about such special solutions typically exhibit negative eigenvalues (a single one for the ground state), which lead to exponential instability of the linearized flow and allows for ideas from hyperbolic dynamics to enter. One of the main results proved here for energy subcritical equations is that the center-stable manifold associated with the ground state appears as a hyper-surface which separates a region of finite-time blowup in forward time from one which exhibits global existence and scattering to zero in forward time. The authors' entire analysis takes place in the energy topology, and the conserved energy can exceed the ground state energy only by a small amount. This monograph is based on recent research by the authors. The proofs rely on an interplay between the variational structure of the ground states and the nonlinear hyperbolic dynamics near these states. A key element in the proof is a virial-type argument excluding almost homoclinic orbits originating near the ground states, and returning to them, possibly after a long excursion. These lectures are suitable for graduate students and researchers in partial differential equations and mathematical physics. For the cubic Klein-Gordon equation in three dimensions all details are provided, including the derivation of Strichartz estimates for the free equation and the concentration-compactness argument leading to scattering due to Kenig and Merle.
