Bringing models and methods of cognitive neuropsychology to bear on the study of dementing disorders, these contributions present sound evidence that diseases of the Alzheimer type compromise brain function in a highly selective manner, affecting some aspects of cognition while sparing others. Included are original case studies that explore in detail the nature of the linguistic, semantic, and visuoperceptual disorders in patients with degenerative dementias. The book pursues a number of themes with important ramifications for the study of higher mental functions. By exploring the neurocognitive modules that are the targets of degenerative processes, it shows that Alzheimer's disease is not one disease but a complex of disease states, that clinical diversity is an essential feature of Alzheimer's disease and Alzheimer-type dementia, that this diversity reflects to a large extent the differential involvement of particular neural systems that support cognition, and that when suitable methods and models are applied, studies of Alzheimer-type dementia can expand our understanding of basic brain-behavior relations. Myrna F. Schwartz is Director of the Neuropsychology Research Laboratory at Moss Rehabilitation Hospital in Philadelphia. Contributors:M. Moscovitch and C. Umilta, M. F. Schwartz, J. A. Stark, A. R. Damasio, G. W. Van Hoesen, B. T. Hyman, J. B. Chawluk, M. Grossman, J. A. Calcano-Perez, A. Alavi, H. I. Hurtig, M. Reivich, A. Martin, J. Baron, M. Moscovitch, H. Chertkow, D. Bub, E. M. Saffran, E. Springtime Heart is a collection of poems written over more than forty years, chronicling one womans life through her observations on love and relationships, family and home and the natural world. Growing up in rural Ontario, Myrna Broadley dreamed of living near the water, with a view of the waves and the sky. The girl became a woman, wife and mother, and realized her dream. On Georgian Bay she found that spot of personal paradise. She marveled at the sights and sounds of the changing seasons; the fl uttering of wings at her birdfeeder; and the rainbow of colours shed planted in her gardens. Amid it all, she experienced the joys and trials that came with raising a family. To this day she still lives in her beloved country home on the shores of Georgian Bay, and watches the sun rise over the water every morning.

South Shore Hospital is a dynamic regional medical center renowned for its culture of healing, caring, and comforting, as well as its top-notch medical and nursing care for thousands of patients a year. Opened as Weymouth Hospital in 1922, the hospital's founders set a standard unusual for the day: they insisted patients receive excellent care regardless of ability to pay and required the hospital be self-supporting. From these seemingly contradictory values grew an enduring legacy. Balancing these values produced many first-in-the-region innovations. The hospital boldly invested in advanced medical equipment and insisted on extraordinarily high clinical standards that won honors nationally. Before Weymouth Hospital welcomed its first patient in its pre-Civil War mansion, the seriously ill were transported to Boston hospitals by train or streetcar, because travel by automobile was difficult, if not downright dangerous. In its first six months, the hospital outgrew the mansion and nearly doubled its size, beginning a pattern of robust growth to meet ever-increasing need. Overcoming the financial hardships of the Depression, surmounting the scarcities of World War II, and managing the region's explosive growth, the hospital's story exemplifies courage in the face of challenges.

Drawing on ethnography of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across Australia, Mortality, Mourning and Mortuary Practices in Indigenous Australia focuses on the current ways in which indigenous people confront and manage various aspects of death. The contributors employ their contemporary and long-term anthropological fieldwork with indigenous Australians to construct rich accounts of indigenous practices and beliefs and to engage with questions relating to the frequent experience of death within the context of unprecedented change and premature mortality. The volume makes use of extensive empirical material to address questions of inequality with specific reference to mortality, thus contributing to the anthropology of indigenous Australia whilst attending to its theoretical, methodological and political concerns. As such, it will appeal not only to anthropologists but also to those interested in social inequality, the social and psychosocial consequences of death, and the conceptualization and manipulation of the relationships between the living and the dead.

Progress" is the story of my life. I'm always very happy and doing the best I can for my life, my family, and friends. I have grown up since I was in my teens caring for everyone to feel happy and safe, especially my daughters, Lisa Lienhard and Theresa Gerson Gardella, and my stepsons, Bobby, Gregg, and David, when I was doing a lot of things during my life with my husband. This also gave me an inspiration to save peoples lives by painting the World Trade Center and donating lots of money to the disabled and the poor. I always have faith in myself to continue to live after I had a heart valve replacement in 2009. In a vivid story of breathtaking scope, I have once again surpassed myself in creating an unforgettable tale of my whole family and friends caught in the tides of personal drama and historic event. I know that this book that I wrote is the finest journey of my life. I have also found a place for myself in the hearts of every person I know. I've had and still have a great life for forty-one years with old rules of love and marriage. That will never change. Love is something that I have chosen to enjoy for the rest of my life.
Framed within her own view of this great river, well-known prairie writer Myrna Kostash has combed the available literature to compile this compendium of writings - poetry, fiction and non-fiction -- from those who spent time reading the river. Beginning with Saskatchewan River Crossing, at the river's source, she takes the reader through 21 communities along the North Saskatchewan, from Edmonton to Prince Albert, from Shandro Crossing (Alberta) to The Pas (Manitoba). Included are the words of people from writers like Hugh McLennan, Eli Mandel, Aritha van Herk, John V. Hicks, and Tomson Highway, to the explorer Alexander Mackenzie, 19th Century mountaineer James Monroe Thorington, to a Cree legend. Reading the River opens with an introduction by Myrna Kostash, and a charting of the geological origins of the North Saskatchewan River, and closes it with The Future River, a commentary in several voices on, among other things, the river's likely return to a place of prominence in prairie lives, not as a transportation route, but this time as a source of crucial fresh water. Each author has a concise biography, setting their remarks in the context of their time and their works. What emerges is a portrait of this vital lifeline, the terrain and the culture that grew, and is growing, on its shores, to be appreciated by anyone who travels on, along, or merely to, the great river.
