Indigenous Futurisms: Transcending Past/Present/Future investigates a major trend in Contemporary Native Art—the rise of futuristic or science-fiction inspired Native American art. The essays and artworks present the future from a Native perspective and illustrate the use of Indigenous cosmology and science as part of tribal oral history and ways of life. Several of the artists use sci-fi related themes to emphasize the importance of Futurism in Native cultures, to pass on tribal oral history and to revive their Native language. However, Indigenous Futurism also offer a way to heal from the traumas of the past and present—the post-apocalyptic narratives depicted in some of the artworks are often reality for Indigenous communities worldwide.
The Eiteljorg Museum is excited to present Native Art Now!, which includes a traveling retrospective exhibition reviewing two decades of the Eiteljorg Contemporary Art Fellowship program. Every other year since 1999, the Fellowship program has selected a new group of five Native artists and provided them grant support to further their careers. The Eiteljorg has purchased more than 200 contemporary works and received gifts of another 200 to add to its permanent collection. Thirty-nine of the most compelling pieces of contemporary art acquired by the museum are on display in Native Art Now! This fascinating exhibition will be open through Jan. 28, 2018. The late twentieth century has been marked by momentous political, economic, and social change throughout the Chinese world. Deeply rooted cultural assumptions and ancient visual traditions have been challenged by rapid modernization and conflicting global, ethnic, and local identities. Inside/Out: New Chinese Art was the first major international exhibition to explore the impact of these challenges on artists in the People's Republic of China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and those of the 1980s Diaspora. Robert Lehman (1891-1969), one of the foremost art collectors of his generation, embraced the work of both traditional and modern masters. This volume catalogues 130 nineteenth- and twentieth-century paintings that are now part of the Robert Lehman Collection at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
