This book explores the complex relationship between the novel and identity in modern Arab culture against a backdrop of contemporary Egypt. It uses the example of the Egyptian novel to interrogate the root causes – religious, social, political, and psychological – of the lingering identity crisis that has afflicted Arab culture for at least two centuries.

The Islamic community boasts of being one united community. Its cornerstone belief is Tawheed (Oneness of G-d). Its fundamental principle is the Unity of G-d, and this speaks to the unity of humanity. Yet when you look at the Islamic community over its almost fifteen century history; racism, prejudice, bias, and discrimination have continued to prevail. I argue that the Islamic community has suffered fragmentation, as a result of this artificial divide. Therefore, the one united community has been more of an ideal than reality. I contend that really understanding the concept of Tawheed is the true answer--the bridge--as it were--to overcoming this artificial divide, the divide that separates the immigrant Muslim from the African American Muslim.
Shí‘ism or Shí‘a Islam is the second largest sect of the Muslim world. The central theme of Shí‘a theology is the position, rights, and qualities that the Imams of Ahlul Bayt possess. Sayyid Muhammad Rizvi starts with a brief discussion on the origin of the Shí‘a Islamic faith, and whether it was political in nature or religious. In Chapter II, he surveys the seIf-censorship exercised by Muslim historians at early as well as modern eras, and how events related to Shí‘ism were suppressed in order to appease the rulers. How did the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) converse and engage with other religious believers? Did he start off with prejudice and mistrust? Or was he convivial and open-minded? This book analyses six models of the dealings in the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), specifically, but not restricted, to the siblings of Abrahamic religious believers. The six models of dialogue analysed in the book are dialogue with Ashamah, Najashi of Abyssinia, delegation of Najran Christians, different Jews of Yathrib, and emperors of Byzantine and Sassanid. The analysis applies Ibn Khaldun’s (d.1406) historical approach which the author termed as Khaldunian Hermeneutics due to the similarity between his ideas to that of Johann Gustav Droysen (d. 1884), a German philosopher, in historical hermeneutics. As such, the analysis goes beyond the dialogue content, taking into consideration the immediate and larger contextual settings, and changes of the contexts due to the passage of time. It critically considers the suitability of each model due to the difference in times and contexts. The book serves as a reference for Muslim dialogue advocates and practitioners, to provide substantial evidence of the dialogue application by the role model of Muslims – the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) whom they hold very dear to their hearts.
In a multi-faith world, Islam is widely regarded as dogmatic and exclusivist. Yet in the Qur’an we have a great and worthy example of how to live in diversity, of powerful scriptural tenets that lend themselves precisely to engagement with those of other faiths. In reality, the Qur’an calls for freedom of faith and peaceful coexistence, but condemns oppression, religious persecution, and those who initiate hostilities. In this way it not only invokes human dignity, but restores it when it is violated.
