Children have long been the "forgotten mourners". This new and revised edition expands on the original book by Sister Margaret Pennells and Susan Smith. It raises awareness of the sensitive issues involved for bereaved children, highlighting their needs and their emotional and behavioural responses when a bereavement occurs. The book includes two new chapters, on traumatic bereavement and secondary losses in bereavement, and it provides more information on each topic. Children's reactions to bereavement and their behaviours are described in more detail, and the consequences of failing to acknowledge children's grief and ways to tackle the subject of death are outlined. The Forgotten Mourners: Second Edition maintains the simple, accessible approach of the original book and will be of use to teachers, social workers and all those working in the field of child bereavement, particularly when faced with difficult situations.

This book announces to the reader that allergens are molecules. Thats right. You are not allergic to the entire ragweed plant, the entire dust mite, or the whole cow, just one or more types of allergic molecule within each of those organisms. If you are allergic to a molecule in a dust mite, for example, you might be allergic to shrimp or even tropical fish food. If you are allergic to some pollens, you could also be allergic to nuts, fruits, and some vegetables because they may share those pesky allergenic molecules. Some of these shared allergenic molecules have been identified by scientists, and the reader will benefit by learning where they hide. The readers unexplained reactions could be caused by these cross-reactive molecules. This is a situation where a little bit of knowledge is dangerous because cross-reactivity as it is, often briefly mentioned in magazines, could create fear of foods. Alternatively, knowledge about cross-reactive molecules could uncover these specific allergens. Patients could easily avoid these cross-reactive pollen molecules if they knew they were in their foods, thereby eliminating much suffering from allergy. Why would a patient who tested positive to a pollen eat the same allergens in a food? If they knew about cross-reactivity, they would not. This book explains the allergic response and the many chemicals the body produces in response to an allergic reaction. Allergy is a serious medical condition, and a patient can unintentionally make their allergic reaction much worse by exposure to a similar cross-reactive allergen. Alternatively, in addition to the patients chosen medical treatment, knowing about cross-reactivity can provide the patient with additional self-help.

The remains of ancient Mediterranean art and architecture that have survived over the centuries present the modern viewer with images of white, the color of the stone often used for sculpture. Antiquarian debates and recent scholarship, however, have challenged this aspect of ancient sculpture. There is now a consensus that sculpture produced in the ancient Mediterranean world, as well as art objects in other media, were, in fact, polychromatic. Color has consequently become one of the most important issues in the study of classical art. Jennifer Stager's landmark book makes a vital contribution to this discussion. Analyzing the dyes, pigments, stones, earth, and metals found in ancient art works, along with the language that writers in antiquity used to describe color, she examines the traces of color in a variety of media. Stager also discusses the significance of a reception history that has emphasized whiteness, revealing how ancient artistic practice and ancient philosophies of color significantly influenced one another.
Disability, Obesity and Ageing offers an engaging account of a new area of pressing concern, analysing the way in which ‘spurned’ identities are depicted and reacted to in televisual genres and online forums. Examining the symbolic power of the media, this book presents case studies from drama, situation comedies, reality and documentary television programmes popular in the UK, USA and Australia to shed light on the representation of disability, obesity and ageing, and the manner in which their status as unwanted and unwelcome identities is perpetuated. A theoretically sophisticated exploration of television as a translator of identity, and the exploration of identity categories in allied virtual spaces, this book will be of interest to sociologists, as well as scholars of popular culture, and cultural and media studies.

John Moschos' Spiritual Meadow is one of the most important sources for late sixth-early seventh century Palestinian, Syrian and Egyptian monasticism. This undisputedly invaluable collection of beneficial tales provides contemporary society with a fuller picture of an imperfect social history of this period: it is a rich source for understanding not only the piety of the monk but also the poor farmer. Brenda Llewellyn Ihssen fills a lacuna in classical monastic secondary literature by highlighting Moschos' unique contribution to the way in which a fertile Christian theology informed the ethics of not only those serving at the altar but also those being served. Introducing appropriate historical and theological background to the tales, Llewellyn Ihssen demonstrates how Moschos' tales addresses issues of the autonomy of individual ascetics and lay persons in relationship with authority figures. Economic practices, health care, death and burials of lay persons and ascetics are examined for the theology and history that they obscure and reveal. Whilst teaching us about the complicated relationships between personal agency and divine intercession, Moschos’ tales can also be seen to reveal liminal boundaries we know existed between the secular and the religious.

There is a saying that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, implying that beauty is subjective. But can it be said that 'better looking' people have more social power? This book provides a fascinating insight into the social stratification of people based on looks – the artificial placement of people into greater and lesser power strata based on physical appearance. The author analyzes different aspects of physical appearance such as faces, breasts, eye shapes, height and weight as they are related to social power and inequality. For example, tall people are often associated with power, with tall people being seen publicly as more capable and thus more deserving of power than shorter people. The author moreover assesses how people's physical appearance affects their chances of marriage, employment, education, and other social and economic opportunities. The book contributes to and differentiates itself from current literature by emphasizing sociological theory – including constructionism and critical theory – and research to understand the phenomenon of social aesthetics, a term coined by the author to refer to the social reaction to physical appearance.

This volume discusses the development of governmental proto-bureaucracy, which led to and was influenced by the inclusion of professional agents and spies in the early modern English government. In the government’s attempts to control religious practices, wage war, and expand their mercantile reach both east and west, spies and agents became essential figures of empire, but their presence also fundamentally altered the old hierarchies of class and power. The job of the spy or agent required fluidity of role, the adoption of disguise and alias, and education, all elements that contributed to the ideological breakdown of social and class barriers. The volume argues that the inclusion of the lower classes (commoners, merchants, messengers, and couriers) in the machinery of government ultimately contributed to the creation of governmental proto-bureaucracy. The importance and significance of these spies is demonstrated through the use of statistical social network analysis, analyzing social network maps and statistics to discuss the prominence of particular figures within the network and the overall shape and dynamics of the evolving Elizabethan secret service. The Eye of the Crown is a useful resource for students and scholars interested in government, espionage, social hierarchy, and imperial power in Elizabethan England.

The Dark Side of Jeff City The first century of the wilderness-born Missouri capital was filled with villainous escapes from the state's only prison, resulting in theft, abuse and even murder. The grandest of escape attempts ended with the city's only triple hanging. The capital city had plenty of entrepreneurs willing to sidestep the federal Volstead Act, which attracted Ku Klux Klan activity and culminated in the election of a "law and order" sheriff, whose deputies broke laws to enforce them. Many other tragedies grieved the community, including the South Side murder of a German immigrant by a teen-aged deputy, who had been caught sleeping with the victim's daughter. Author Michelle Brooks has collected a sample of some of the shocking events of Jefferson City's first century.
`Debbie Daniels and Peter Jenkins approach the complex issue of the rights of children to seek and sustain psychotherapy with skill and sensitivity. They provide a lucid and accurate account of psychoanalytically-orientated counselling and psychotherapy and illustrate how the needs of the child for a place of confidential safety is essential for any child to trust a therapist, and eventually, for the society of `childhood' at large to appreciate the sanctuary provided by this trust.... Daniels and Jenkins' book arrives at a crucial moment in history of the therapeutic treatment of children and adults. It is fair-minded, exceptionally informative, well written, and compelling' - Christopher Bollas - from the Foreword

This VSI offers a broad global and temporal history of polygamy and its importance in a range of settings. Polygamy, or plural marriage, has been an accepted form of union in the majority of human societies. People living on every continent have practiced this form of marriage; some still do. Plural marriages, just as more recent same-sex marriages, offer intriguing access to the workings of the institution of marriage, as well as the controversies linking public and private, sex and politics, that have surrounded it. Confrontations over this type of marriage have also been historically important, especially in a range of colonial, imperial, and missionary encounters. Polygamy has come to symbolize a problematic, even "barbaric," form of marriage. Yet, even amid Christians, it has had notable defenders, including a number of radical Protestants such as Martin Luther, John Milton, and of course Joseph Smith. This book illuminates the public importance of the intimate, considering issues of cultural contact and confrontation, the shape of empires, slavery and hierarchy, royal and aristocratic power, religion and conflict, war and expansion, race and nation"--
