This work reports on the generation of artificial magnetic fields with ultracold atoms in optical lattices using laser-assisted tunneling, as well as on the first Chern-number measurement in a non-electronic system. It starts with an introduction to the Hofstadter model, which describes the dynamics of charged particles on a square lattice subjected to strong magnetic fields. This model exhibits energy bands with non-zero topological invariants called Chern numbers, a property that is at the origin of the quantum Hall effect. The main part of the work discusses the realization of analog systems with ultracold neutral atoms using laser-assisted-tunneling techniques both from a theoretical and experimental point of view. Staggered, homogeneous and spin-dependent flux distributions are generated and characterized using two-dimensional optical super-lattice potentials. Additionally their topological properties are studied via the observation of bulk topological currents. The experimental techniques presented here offer a unique setting for studying topologically non-trivial systems with ultracold atoms.

Die Studie beschäftigt sich mit dem Perfekt im Deutschen und Englischen und dessen Verhältnis zu zwei Klassen von Adverbien. Die Klasse der durativen Adverbien ist seit Dowtys (1979) Word meaning and Montague grammar immer im Zusammenhang mit dem Perfekt diskutiert worden, weil diese Adverbien nur dann mehrdeutig zwischen einer universellen und einer existentiellen Lesart zu sein schienen. Datenrecherchen zeigen aber, dass diese Mehrdeutigkeiten bei allen Tempora vorkommen. Dies führt zu einer neuen Analyse der Durativadverbien, bei der die Quantifizierung über Teilintervalle von der Bedeutung des Durativs abgespalten und die Mehrdeutigkeiten als Skopusambiguitäten gedeutet werden. Die Theorie erzeugt auch Lesarten, die für manche Sprecher nicht akzeptabel sind; diese werden durch eine optimalitätstheoretische Komponente herausgefiltert. Die zweite in der Studie behandelte Klasse von Adverbien sind die Extended-Now-Adverbien wie schon immer. Diese wurden bisher nicht im Zusammenhang mit dem Perfekt diskutiert; hier wird anhand von Korpusdaten argumentiert, dass diese Adverbien eine Behandlung des deutschen und englischen Perfekts als Extended-Now erzwingen. Anterioritätstheorien in der Nachfolge von Reichenbach (1947) sind nicht haltbar. Das durch datenbasierte Untersuchungen motivierte Temporalsystem ist einfacher und kompositionaler als bestehende Ansätze.

This book is a study of the L1 attrition of German among German Jews who emigrated to anglophone countries under the Nazi regime. It places the study of language attrition within the historical and sociocultural framework of Weimar and Nazi Germany, applying issues of identity and identification to first language loss and maintenance. Morphosyntactic features of German are looked at in free spoken discourse, in an analysis of both ‘interferences’ or ‘errors’ and their overall (correct) use. The picture of L1 proficiency which emerges from these investigations is then related to a taxonomy of intensity of persecution, clearly demonstrating this to be the decisive factor in language attrition, while showing other factors such as age at emigration and intermediate use to be inconclusive.In order to give a full and tangible picture of language attrition and maintenance, the book comes with an Audio-CD, featuring excerpts from more than twenty of the interviews analyzed.

The empirical evidence from the first objective of this study corroborates the claim that independent directors do not strengthen the firms’ governance quality. The book is one of the few works to have analysed the possible reasons behind the ineffectiveness of the independent directors. Also, in view of the famous concept of the bundle of governance mechanisms, it might be possible that the independent directors strengthen the firms’ governance quality indirectly by strengthening other governance mechanisms. This aspect too has little precedence. This study adopts a novel moderation and mediation approach to analyse the monitoring behaviour of independent directors in relation to other governance mechanisms. The work is a must read for corporate players as well as researchers and scholars studying this discipline.

What influences political behavior more -- one's gender or one's gendered personality traits? Certain gendered traits have long been associated with particular political leanings in American politics. For example, the Democratic Party is thought to have a compassionate, feminine nature while the Republican Party is deemed to have a tougher, more masculine nature. Masculinity, Femininity, and American Political Behavior, a first-of-its-kind analysis of the effects of individuals' gendered personality traits -- masculinity and femininity -- on their political attitudes and behavior, argues that gendered personalities, and not biological sex, are what drive the political behavior of individual citizens. Drawing on a groundbreaking national survey measuring gendered personality traits and political preferences, the book shows that individuals' levels of masculine and feminine personality traits help to determine their party identification, vote choice, ideology, and political engagement. And in conjunction with biological sex, these traits also influence attitudes about sex roles. For example, the more strongly an individual identifies with "feminine" characteristics, the more strongly they identify with the Democratic Party. Likewise, the more "masculine" an individual, the more they are drawn to the GOP. The book also demonstrates that, despite conventional wisdom, biological sex does not dictate gendered personalities. As such, the personality trait approach of the book moves gender and politics research well beyond the traditional male/female dichotomy. Moreover, Masculinity, Femininity, and American Political Behavior points to new and as yet underexplored strategies for candidate campaigns, get out the vote efforts, and officeholders' governing behavior.

This thesis addresses the problem of improving the alignment of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in transistor applications, taking a unique approach using iptycenes acting as molecular tweezers in combination with a liquid crystal solvent. As part of a project to test the effectiveness of a multi-step method, the so-called Alignment Relay Technique (ART), this work contributed evidence for the selectivity and stability of ART, as well as providing the first proof-of-concept that ART can be used to create CNT field-effect transistors (FETs). The thesis effectively explains and illustrates the chemical synthesis of the tweezers, the concept and actualization of the technique, the various factors observed to influence deposition and selectivity, along with material fabrication using both photolithography and electron beam lithography. This research advances knowledge of transistors and expands the applications of small organic molecules in the field of materials science. Particular highlights of this thesis include: an extensive review of ART, its advantages, and limitations; development of new material chemistry methods for the optimization of semiconducting CNT selectivity; and a comprehensive exploration of fabrication and characterization of CNTFETs for future applications.

George Eliot U.S. demonstrates the complex and reciprocal relationship between George Eliot's fiction and the writings of her major American contemporaries, including Nathaniel Hawthorne, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Ralph Waldo Emerson. The book also traces Eliot's influence on subsequent American fiction. The introductory section raises methodological questions concerning influence and intertextuality and addresses the mutual reception of European and American social and cultural discourses in order to illuminate culturally motivated divergences and convergences in the authors' presentation of gender, race, and national and ethnic alterity. The book's main body discusses Eliot's and the American writers' depiction of domestic social discourses on gender, religion, and community, and analyzes their depiction of the cultural alterity of Italy. It also focuses on Eliot's and Stowe's different attitudes toward race (and nation building), and discusses the parallels between the kabbalistic passages of Daniel Deronda and American transcendentalist thought. and social life in works by later writers such as Cynthia Ozick and John Irving. Monika Mueller teaches American and English literature at the University of Cologne.
