It offers advice on how to construct experimental materials which are parallel across different languages set up a protocol for additional measures which can be applied across a wide range of participants combine data from different labs when using different ERP equipment and different eyetrackers.

The challenges posed by globalization for languages, policies and education form the basis of this collection of selected doubly-blind peer-reviewed articles, which have been put together following the 2014 PLIDAM conference on “Policies and Ideologies in Language Teaching: Actors and discourses”. The chapters collected in this volume revolve around the topic of globalization, which we understand to be a blend of ideas covered by at least four meanings: (1) internationalization, in reference to the growing interdependence and transactions between countries; (2) liberalization, which has to do with the forming of an ‘open’ and ‘borderless’ world economy; (3) universalization of certain phenomena around the world; and (4) westernization, with an emphasis on the influence of Western values (gender equality, freedom of speech and other ideas inspired by the West) over the rest of the world. Offering a variety of critical approaches to late eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Gothic literature, this collection provides a transnational view of the emergence and flowering of the Gothic. The essays expand on now well-known approaches to the Gothic (such as those that concentrate exclusively on race, gender, or nation) by focusing on international issues: religious traditions, social reform, economic and financial pitfalls, manifest destiny and expansion, changing concepts of nationhood, and destabilizing moments of empire-building. By examining a wide array of Gothic texts, including novels, drama, and poetry, the contributors present the Gothic not as a peripheral, marginal genre, but as a central mode of literary exchange in an ever-expanding global context. Thus the traditional conventions of the Gothic, such as those associated with Ann Radcliffe and Monk Lewis, are read alongside unexpected Gothic formulations and lesser-known Gothic authors and texts. These include Mary Rowlandson and Bram Stoker, Frances and Anthony Trollope, Louisa May Alcott, Elizabeth Gaskell, Theodore Dreiser, Rudyard Kipling, and Lafcadio Hearn, as well as the actors Edmund Kean and George Frederick Cooke. Individually and collectively, the essays provide a much-needed perspective that eschews national borders in order to explore the central role that global (and particularly transatlantic) exchange played in the development of the Gothic. Today People’s Republic of China is emerging as one of the major global economies. But a lot of negotiations between German and Chinese businessmen have failed in China because German entrepreneurs have not been sufficiently prepared for the different cultural peculiarities of negotiations with Chinese business partners. This dissertation will analyse the cultural peculiarities of negotiations with Chinese business partners. Different theories about culture, communication and negotiations and their interactions are examined. The researcher will analyse differences between the German and Chinese business culture including the values influencing the German and Chinese business behaviour and communication style. A comparison of the German culture and negotiation skills with the Chinese culture and negotiation skills will be drawn. Prerequisites to commitment in China will be investigated and the Chinese framework of communication will be identified. Furthermore the Chinese bargaining and negotiation tactics as well as the purpose and format of Chinese negotiations will be discovered and the importance of “guanxi” and “mianxi” and their effects on business behaviour will be identified. The researcher will also advance the hypothesis that China has faced and will face the influence of materialism as a force undermining traditional values. To prove this hypothesis, she will analyse potential factors and forces that influence Chinese culture and with it the negotiations with Chinese business partners.

It is well known that Intersymbol (ISI) Interference is a limiting factor in many communication environments where it causes an irreducible degradation of the bit error rate (BER) thus imposing an upper limit on the data symbol rate. In order to overcome the ISI problem, an equalizer is implemented in those systems. Among the three types of equalizers - non-blind, semi-blind and blind - the blind equalizer has the benefit of bandwidth saving and there is no need of going through a training phase. Blind equalization algorithms are essentially adaptive filtering algorithms designed such that they do not require the external supply of a desired response to generate the error signal in the output of the adaptive equalization filter. the algorithms generate an estimate of the desired response by applying a nonlinear transformation to sequences involved in the adaptation process. This nonlinearity is designed to minimize a cost function that is implicitly based on higher order statistics (HOS) according to one approach, or calculated directly according to the Bayes rules. The Whole Story behind Blind Adaptive Equalizers/ Blind Deconvolution gives the readers a full understanding on the blind deconvolution. the e-book covers a variety of blind deconvolution/equalization methods based on both cost functions and Bayes rules where simulation results are supplied to support the theory. These include the Maximum Entropy density approximation technique and the Edgeworth Expansion approach used in various blind equalizers. It also describes the relationship between the cost function approach and the approach taken according to Bayes rules. the e-book deals also with the effect of various system parameters (such as the step-size parameter or the equalizer's tap length) have on the obtained equalization performance. Modern movement garages built over the last 60 years are becoming redundant due to changing mobility trends and growing environmental awareness. Adaptive reuse is one of the scenarios that can reconcile these megastructures with contemporary urban needs. The novel function proposed in this study for multi-storey garages is controlled environment agriculture, which is a food production technique that is now developing in cities as an innovative business and a secondary food source. First, the study focuses on the theory of repurposing existing buildings for food production, which is then summarised in the form of a guide for the analysis of the adaptive reuse potential of inner-city car parking structures for controlled environment agriculture. Second, the guide is applied to two case studies, which allows exploring their potential to accommodate urban farming from planning, architectural, and environmental perspectives. The book aims to inspire and support decision-makers, architects, scholars and students when elaborating novel solutions for repurposing buildings for alternative functions. The publication encourages treating existing building stock as a resource that can become a stimulus for the new design process, which improves urban food provision.

In the past 50 years, consumers’ buying situations have not become easier. Consumers remain easily overwrought by complex buying situations that involve buying complex products or services, such as laptops or insurances. In such situations, consumers find it difficult to make a decision and must spend high levels of cognitive effort on it. Prior consumer research has addressed the complexity of buying situations in several research streams such as in choice complexity or product complexity literature. However, previous researchers have not reached consensus on what constitutes the complexity of a buying situation. Furthermore, they have mostly concentrated on cognitive constructs and emotional constructs have been rather unexplored. To close these research gaps, this dissertation provides an in-depth conceptualization of complex buying situations by developing a comprehensive reference framework. Furthermore, this dissertation differs from prior research by examining in detail negative emotional responses to complexity (NERCO). A reliable and valid NERCO scale is developed that consists of two factors, emotional resignation and fear of post-purchase dissonance. An experiment investigates the influence of two input variables of the reference framework (1. the number of alternatives in the consumer’s price class and 2. the perceived expertise of the salesperson who provides a recommendation in a buying situation) on perceived choice complexity and on NERCO. This dissertation paves the way for numerous directions for future research on the complexity of buying situations by providing theoretical fundamentals in the form of a detailed conceptualization and by precisely defining the research gaps.

In this thesis an in-depth experimental study of the spray coating of light weighting and mesoporous organic aerogels was carried out. The main goal of this study was to design a stable core-shell particle system with a uniform coating layer without changing the initial particle structure. Further, the applied coating layer provides many beneficial improvements and additional properties for the aerogel particles, like an enhanced mechanical stability or a protection against moisture during storage. To design the structured core-shell particles with unaffected porous structure and uniform coating layer, series of experiments was conducted. The coating process with beeswax and ethanol based shellac solutions was performed at two levels using acoustic levitation and spouted bed set ups. At single particle level the basic influences on particle structure were captured. During coating at multiple particle level, which was performed in spouted bed, the results were validated. The optimum coating process parameters were identified. A uniform and stable core-shell particle system was designed. No change of initial porous particle structure was observed.

The Racial Politics of Division deconstructs antagonistic discourses that circulated in local Miami media between African Americans, "white" Cubans, and "black" Cubans during the 1980 Mariel Boatlift and the 1994 Balsero Crisis. Monika Gosin challenges exclusionary arguments pitting these groups against one another and depicts instead the nuanced ways in which identities have been constructed, negotiated, rejected, and reclaimed in the context of Miami's historical multiethnic tensions. Focusing on ideas of "legitimacy," Gosin argues that dominant race-making ideologies of the white establishment regarding "worthy citizenship" and national belonging shape inter-minority conflict as groups negotiate their precarious positioning within the nation. Rejecting oversimplified and divisive racial politics, The Racial Politics of Division portrays the lived experiences of African Americans, white Cubans, and Afro-Cubans as disrupters in the binary frames of worth-citizenship narratives. Foregrounding the oft-neglected voices of Afro-Cubans, Gosin posits new narratives regarding racial positioning and notions of solidarity in Miami. By looking back to interethnic conflict that foreshadowed current demographic and social trends, she provides us with lessons for current debates surrounding immigration, interethnic relations, and national belonging. Gosin also shows us that despite these new demographic realities, white racial power continues to reproduce itself by requiring complicity of racialized groups in exchange for a tenuous claim on US citizenship.

Unearthing previously unknown Tercentenary events in Europe, the British Empire, and the USA, Monika Smialkowska demonstrates that the 1916 Shakespeare commemorators did not speak with one unified voice. Tributes by marginalised social, ethnic, and racial groups often challenged the homogenising narratives of the official celebrations. Rather than the traditionally patriotic Bard, used to support totalising versions of national or imperial identity, this study reveals Shakespeare as a site of debate and contestation, in which diverse voices – local and global, nationalist and universalist, militant and pacifist – combined and clashed in a fascinating, open-ended dialogue.

This thesis addresses the problem of improving the alignment of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in transistor applications, taking a unique approach using iptycenes acting as molecular tweezers in combination with a liquid crystal solvent. As part of a project to test the effectiveness of a multi-step method, the so-called Alignment Relay Technique (ART), this work contributed evidence for the selectivity and stability of ART, as well as providing the first proof-of-concept that ART can be used to create CNT field-effect transistors (FETs). The thesis effectively explains and illustrates the chemical synthesis of the tweezers, the concept and actualization of the technique, the various factors observed to influence deposition and selectivity, along with material fabrication using both photolithography and electron beam lithography. This research advances knowledge of transistors and expands the applications of small organic molecules in the field of materials science. Particular highlights of this thesis include: an extensive review of ART, its advantages, and limitations; development of new material chemistry methods for the optimization of semiconducting CNT selectivity; and a comprehensive exploration of fabrication and characterization of CNTFETs for future applications.
