As with all failing systems, interdependence is a blessing and a curse. The accoutrements of a body and their associations with people, places, and time are inextricable from each other. Concomitants, if you will. Concomitance began as documentary and aimed to catalogue the infinitesimal yet burdensome acts of labor behind routine grooming, to examine the daily self reform implied by cosmetics and clothing. Because self maintenance eats up time, the book chews through memory with digressive narratives and swallows the present with real-time thought progressions. Dressing and the tedium of hygiene serve to put us more substantively in a time and place. I remember events by what I was wearing. I look at a tube of lip gloss and think of someone I wanted to kiss.

Whether a person believes in God, a Supreme Being, or the Big Bang, there is always a philosophical expression we live by. Regardless of your philosophy, religious faith, or creed, each of you should bring to this book your own favorite words to express these Universal Truths that help convey your idea of God. As I wrote these chapters, I used expressions for God, Spirit, Life, and Love with which I’m most familiar, those that touch my heart. My hope is that the expressions I’ve used will touch your heart, also, or that you’ll be able to freely adjust them in your own mind to those that are your chosen favorites. Regardless of the specific terms I may have used in order to keep the presentation simple, my desire is that each of you will find your own sense of spirituality in this book. It matters little to our animal friends what our religious or philosophical preferences are. Their only purpose in life is to give us Unconditional Love and teach us how to Love Unconditionally. Love is their religion, their philosophy. And through the deep Love you and your pet share, I know you’ll be able to joyfully speak to each other’s hearts! On a very practical note, for ease of expression, there are a few places in this book where I may have opted not to follow one of the regular rules of grammar. I may have mixed a singular noun with plural pronouns, or vice versa, knowing full well that I’m taking the liberty of not matching singular with singular or plural with plural. I do so with apologies to editors, teachers, and anyone who loves exactness of expression. Also for ease of both writing and reading in a number of examples, I’ve occasionally referred to a pet only as “he” or only as “she.” However, in your own mind as you read, please feel free to use the pronoun that best represents your own beloved pet. ~ Dr. Monica Anaheim, CA

Thousands of pounds of dynamite were used to blast through granite, marble, and sandstone to build a highway following near or along the coastline. Among the 33 bridges along the route is the remarkable Bixby (Rainbow) Bridge at Big Sur. The highway wends its way through some of the most magnificent and scenic landscapes and historical places found between Ventura and Humboldt Counties, making it more than just a road. It is a destination.

The nature of human resource development (HRD) has been, and remains, a contested topic – the debate was sparked in part by Monica Lee’s seminal 2001 paper which refused to define the discipline of HRD, but has been accentuated by increasing globalization, political unrest, inequality and the erosion of boundaries. Should HRD now be seen as more than ‘training,’ or a sub-function of large western bureaucracy? This book represents a very wide view of HRD: that it is at the core of our ‘selves’ and our relationships, and that we continually co-create ourselves, our organisations and societies. These ideas are hung upon a model of Holistic Agency, and supported from sources as diverse as evolutionary psychology, science fiction, the challenges of transitional economies, and the structural uncertainties of contemporary society. Examining the tensions between self and other, agency and structure, the book draws inspiration from an almost-autoethnographic approach. This yields a text that is personal, entertaining, and easier to read than many academic tomes – yet considers the depth and development of the human condition, and locates HRD within that.
