From New York Times bestselling author Molly Guptill Manning comes The War of Words, the captivating story of how American troops in World War II wielded pens to tell their own stories as they made history. At a time when civilian periodicals faced strict censorship, US Army Chief of Staff George Marshall won the support of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt to create an expansive troop-newspaper program. Both Marshall and FDR recognized that there was a second struggle taking place outside the battlefields of World War II—the war of words. While Hitler inundated the globe with propaganda, morale across the US Army dwindled. As the Axis blurred the lines between truth and fiction, the best defense was for American troops to bring the truth into focus by writing it down and disseminating it themselves. By war’s end, over 4,600 unique GI publications had been printed around the world. In newsprint, troops made sense of their hardships, losses, and reasons for fighting. These newspapers—by and for the troops—became the heart and soul of a unit. From Normandy to the shores of Japan, American soldiers exercised a level of free speech the military had never known nor would again. It was an extraordinary chapter in American democracy and military history. In the war for “four freedoms,” it was remarkably fitting that troops fought not only with guns but with their pens. This stunning volume includes fourteen pages of photographs and illustrations.
Danger, adventure, love and war were words little Malke Sherman never dreamed that she would experience. As a young girl in Russia, Malke Sherman learned the hardships of life. She experienced loss, despair, and even bigotry. In that short time living in Russia, she endured more suffering than many do in an entire lifetime. Then she got the chance to come to America, to leave all the suffering behind along with her name. Molly now began a life in America, the land of opportunity. However, the circumstances were not much better in Newark, NJ as they were in Russia. Her family suffered many of the perils that all immigrants of the early 1900's suffered. Molly’s story isn’t all bad though, her uplifting attitude along with her perseverance allowed her to conquer all of the challenges that she faced.

From acclaimed short story writer Molly Giles, author of the Pulitzer Prize-nominated collection Rough Translations, comes this splendid debut novel about one woman's spirited search for identity and meaning following her family's disintegration. Set amid the woodsy affluence of Northern California, Iron Shoes incisively chronicles the coming-of-middle-age story of Kay Sorensen, who has lived her entire life in the shadow of her glamorous parents. When Kay hits forty, she is suddenly smacked with the realization that she is not the woman she wants to be -- and certainly not the woman her family wants her to be. Her emotionally detached father will never forgive her for dropping out of Juilliard at eighteen; her dramatic, showstopping mother will never comprehend how she turned out so ordinary; and her fastidious, self-controlled second husband will never accept her weakness for red meat, cigarettes, and alcohol. Worst of all, Kay cannot forgive herself for giving up on her dreams and settling -- for a husband she doesn't love, for an amateurish church orchestra, for a dead-end job at a library bound to lose its funding. Unable to shake the feeling that she's somehow stuck, Kay lives vicariously through her free-spirited friend Zabeth and pins her hopes for the future on Charles Lichtman, a beguiling stranger with whom she feels destined to have an affair. But when her mother's illness -- seemingly feigned for as long as Kay can remember -- finally takes her life, Kay feels her ennui and stasis painfully give way to an unnerving helplessness. Losing a lifelong crutch, she is suddenly set adrift -- weightless, without a compass, and without hope. With her crystalline prose and seamless mixing of tender tragedy and laugh-out-loud humor, Molly Giles delivers a deeply moving exploration of a middle-aged woman who has never asked herself -- nor answered -- an honest question in her life. At once heartrending, hilarious, and wise, Iron Shoes is a mesmerizing debut novel.
Katy receives a "gift" of poison that turns her into a killer, while powerful witches stir up trouble, not only at Ainsworth School, but in a world known as Avalon, as well.
This writing describes a life journey: it is a quest for meaning behind the motives and actions of others. It is told through the eyes and voice of Katherine; she seeks understanding of people close to her. Misunderstandings produce anger, hatred, apathy, and a lack of compassion. She relies on addictive behaviours to change the way she feels. Katherine wishes to rid herself of this negativity which creates bondage and which has the potential to destroy her, injure others, or even drive her to commit a murder. After many years, she gains insight into her fellow, human beings. She understands. She sees more clearly but not without the aid of others. She discovered she couldn't accomplish serenity and acceptance on her own. Kate's story introduces the reader to the persons on her team that guided her to a stage in her life where she is able to find contentment, peace, and love. LOVE becomes her state of being. She learns to accept and love herself as well as her fellows.

This series was created to afford serious students of Western music the opportunity of relating the component parts of the music they have played, that is, melody, harmony, rhythm, phrasing and structure. The harmonic vocabulary has been introduced in a logical order using melodic lines and examples from a wide variety of composers, periods, styles and media. Companion volumes encourage creative discussion of the music examples, more time for sight reading and more time for keyboard harmony.

An Atlanta ex-cop comes to sleepy Lake Sackett, Georgia, seeking peace and quiet—but he hasn’t bargained on falling for Frankie, the cutest coroner he’s ever met. Frankie McCready talks to dead people. Not like a ghost whisperer or anything—but it seems rude to embalm them and not at least say hello. Fortunately, at the McCready Family Funeral Home & Bait Shop, Frankie’s eccentricities fit right in. Lake Sackett’s embalmer and county coroner, Frankie’s goth styling and passion for nerd culture mean she’s not your typical Southern girl, but the McCreadys are hardly your typical Southern family. Led by Great-Aunt Tootie, the gambling, boozing, dog-collecting matriarch of the family, everyone looks out for one another—which usually means getting up in everyone else’s business. Maybe that’s why Frankie is so fascinated by new sheriff Eric Linden...a recent transplant from Atlanta, he sees a homicide in every hunting accident or boat crash, which seems a little paranoid for this sleepy tourist town. What’s he so worried about? And what kind of cop can get a job with the Atlanta PD but can’t stand to look at a dead body? Frankie has other questions that need answering first—namely, who’s behind the recent break-in attempts at the funeral home, and how can she stop them? This one really does seem like a job for the sheriff—and as Frankie and Eric do their best Scooby-Doo impressions to catch their man, they get closer to spilling some secrets they thought were buried forever. With Ain’t She a Peach, Molly Harper proves once again that she “never lets the reader down with her delightfully entertaining stories” (Single Titles).
