This book deals with a specific type of translation that has been the subject of several books in Arabic, namely media translation, which has been gaining prominence lately. It is divided into two sections. The first deals with the history, importance, role, the major theories and types of translation. The second offers some applications in Arabic and English for the benefit of those working in the field of media translation. The book seeks to help those interested in studying the science and history of translation and those wishing to acquire skills for this profession and engage in it after achieving proficiency in the two languages: the target language and the source language. The book hopes to fill a void in the Arabic library, especially in the field of media translation.
Professor of History at Islamia College Lahore, Professor Muhammad Aslam, wrote about Shah Fateh Ullah Shirazi in 1960s. His Urdu essay on Shah Fateh Ullah tells us the story of this great man, of many talents, who changed Mogul India under Emperor Akbar the Great in the 16th century AD. This Urdu essay was translated by Mohammad Akmal Makhdum, to share the story with English readership. Shah Fateh Ullah Shirazi was a prince in the court of Emperor Akbar the Great, also known as The Great Mogul. He was a migrant from Persia and came to Mogul India in the 16th century AD. He was a renowned scholar and diplomat in the court of Deccan state. After the death of the ruler of Deccan, he was invited by Emperor Akbar to come to his court where the emperor, who became a great admirer and friend of his scholarship, arranged his marriage with emperor's sister-in-law. This made Shah Fateh Ullah a prince, and a a relative of the emperor. Fateh Ullah, by his own merit became one of the main advisors of the emperor, on all matters, official and personal. Fateh Ullah was an inventor, mathematician, architect, diplomat, physician, scholar of literature, languages, religion and wrestling. He invented a gun with 17 barrels; a cannon with multiple barrels; a mechanical cannon cleaner; cranes for heavy lifting; cannons that could be dismantled and transported over hills and re-assembled; cannon barrels that could be screwed apart for ease of transport and re-screwed; air-conditioning and water supply machines for the new Capital of the Mogul Indian Empire: Fateh Pur Sikri. He invented mobile showers and mobile homes for royal court travels; changed the education system and introduced scientific methods in education and the curricula. He became president of all educational authorities in the Mogul Indian Empire. he was a strong influence on how the empire was run and at his untimely death by Typhoid fever, the emperor was inconsolable, weeping frequently and remembering his friend, advisor, physician, inventor, confidante and friend. Few people know about this great man.

From Timur's tent in Samarqand to Shah 'Abbas's palace in Isfahan and Humayun's tomb in Delhi, the pavilion has been an integral part of Persianate gardens since its earliest appearance at the Achaemenid garden in Pasargadae in the sixth century BC. Here, Mohammad Gharipour places both the garden and the pavilion within their historical, literary and artistic contexts, emphasizing the importance of the pavilion, which has hitherto been overlooked in the study of Iranian historical architecture. Starting with an examination of the depictions and representations of gardens in religious texts, Gharipour analyses the how the idea of the garden developed from the model of pre-Islamic gardens in Achaemenid and Sassanian Persia to its mentions in the Zoroastrian text of Aban Yasht and on to its central role as paradise in the Qur'an. Continuing on with an exploration of gardens and pavilions in Persian poetry, Gharipour offers in-depth analysis of their literal and metaphorical values. It is in the poetry of major Persian poets such as Ferdowsi, Naser Khosrow, Sa'di, Rumi and Hafez that Gharipour finds that whilst gardens are praised for their spiritual values, they also contain significant symbolic worth in terms of temporal wealth and power. Persian Gardens and Pavilions then goes onto examine the garden and the pavilion as reflected in Persian miniature painting, sculpture and carpets, as well as accounts of travelers to Persia. With masters such as Bizhad representing daily life as well as the more mystical prose and poetry in, for example, Sa'di's Bustan (The Orchard) and Golestan (The Rose Garden), the garden and the pavilion can be seen to have crucial semiotic significances and cultural meanings. But in addition to this, they also point to historical patterns of patronage and ownership which were of central importance in the diplomatic and social life of the royal courts of Persia. Gharipour thereby highlights the metaphorical, spiritual, symbolic and religious aspects of gardens, as well as their more materialistic and economic functions. This book reaches back through Persia's rich history to explore the material and psychological relationships between human beings, pavilions and gardens, and will be a valuable resource for Art History, Architecture and Iranian Studies.
I wanted to write this book in response to the types of questions i had encountered during the course of my 17 year career as a religious teacher, to young children and adults in the United Kingdom. I was faced with many questions; this meant that i had to refer to various books and other sources of research to get the best answers as possible. i could not find any comprehensive text dealing with questions that were asked of me. It occurred to me that i should compile a book comprehensive enough to address central questions and issues associated with practices of our Deen as well as special Du'as which we should try to read in every day life. I have dealt with the importance of Durood Shareef and Du'as that should be recited. This book is aimed at the English speaking youth to make it more accessible so that the maximum amount of benefit can be reaped from it. I hope that this ensures what children learn will remain with them so that they do not forget the lessons this book teaches. I take responsibility for what ever is written in this book and any mistakes are my own and may Allah forgive me of there are any. I pray that people get benefit from this book and pass on any knowledge they get for the pleasure of Allah.
Spanning over a period of more than five decades since its inception, Iran’s nuclear programme is the most protracted civilian nuclear program in the world and one of the most politicized projects in Iran’s history. 'Iran and the Nuclear Question' offers a historiographical portrait of Iran’s early nuclear program under Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi. Using declassified archival material, the book thematically chronicles the program’s genesis, evolutionary trajectory, and devolution from the 1950s through to the 1970s. It also catalogues the Revolutionary Iran’s early socialization into the atom and the Islamic Republic’s gradual change of heart about nuclear energy that culminated in the incremental resuscitation of the Shah’s nuclear enterprise in the 1980s. As the first archive-based account of one of the most long-lasting and capital-intensive nuclear enterprises during the Cold War, ‘Iran and the Nuclear Question’ is a valuable resource for students and scholars of Iranian, Middle East and Security Studies. Written in a clear and accessible format, it will also appeal to those with a more general interest in Iran and its nuclear journey.
What wisdom lies behind the pilgrimage? What benefit comes from its strange rituals? Why should the pilgrim dress in white, untailored cloth? What is the wisdom of circumambulating a big stone named Al-Ka'ba? What does the hajji (pilgrim) benefit from kissing the Black Stone? What is the purpose of walking quickly to and fro between Safa and Marwa? What is the importance of standing on a mountain named Arafat? What is the purpose of throwing seven pebbles? Can these seven pebbles destroy Satan, who is immaterial and invisible? Why are animals slaughtered in these places? If you are eager and interested to know the answers to these exciting questions, then let us sail forth into this research, which leads us to the straight path and ensures that there is no deviation from it. Thus we may live a life of eternal happiness. Let us seize the opportunity to gain a span of life compared to which our worldly life is not worth mentioning. Let us start now, for when death knocks at our door, regret will avail us nothing. At that time, how great will be the loss of those who turned away from their Provider!
This book brings together an Iranian Iran-Iraq War veteran and an American Vietnam War veteran, both mental health professionals, to exchange war stories and discuss self-help strategies for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). They engage in forms of self-help therapy for treating PTSD. Each chapter contains an exchange of stories, a discussion of therapy in progress, and self-help assignments for readers.
This book emphasizes the use of four complex plane formalisms (impedance, admittance, complex capacitance, and modulus) in a simultaneous fashion. The purpose of employing these complex planes for handling semicircular relaxation using a single set of measured impedance data (ac small-signal electrical data) is highly underscored. The current literature demonstrates the importance of template version of impedance plot whereas this book reflects the advantage of using concurrent four complex plane plots for the same data. This approach allows extraction of a meaningful equivalent circuit model attributing to possible interpretations via potential polarizations and operative mechanisms for the investigated material system. Thus, this book supersedes the limitations of the impedance plot, and intends to serve a broader community of scientific and technical professionals better for their solid and liquid systems. This book addresses the following highlighted contents for the measured data but not limited to the:- (1) Lumped Parameter/Complex Plane Analysis (LP/CPA) in conjunction with the Bode plots; (2) Equivalent circuit model (ECM) derived from the LP/CPA; (3) Underlying Operative Mechanisms along with the possible interpretations; (4) Ideal (Debye) and non-ideal (non-Debye) relaxations; and (5) Data-Handling Criteria (DHC) using Complex Nonlinear Least Squares (CNLS) fitting procedures.
The second largest branch of Islam, with between 130 and 190 million adherents across the globe, Shi'i Islam is becoming an increasingly significant force in contemporary politics, especially in the Middle East. This makes an informed understanding of its fundamental spiritual beliefs and practices both necessary and timely. Mohammad Ali Amir-Moezzi is one of the most distinguished scholars of Shi'i history and theology, and in this volume he offers a wide-ranging and engaging survey of the core texts of Shi'i Islam. Examining in turn the origins and later developments of Shi'i spirituality, the author reveals the profoundly esoteric nature of the beliefs which accrued to the figures of the early Imams, and which became associated with their interaction between the material and spiritual worlds. Many of these beliefs have remained much misunderstood even within the wider Muslim world. Furthermore, Western scholarship has tended to follow the lead of the earlier orientalists and critics, viewing Shi'i teachings as marginal. In this study the author shows, by contrast, how central and creative the very nature of spirituality was to the development of Shi'i Islam, as well as to classical Muslim civilisation as a whole. In this comprehensive treatment, the esoteric nature of Shi'i spirituality emerges as an essential phenomenon for understanding Shi'i Islam.
For a Pashtun, the world is a dangerous place. . . . To negotiate such a world, a man or woman needs wise words. . . . Pashto proverbs provide critical lessons about faith and honor, human nature and relationships, friends and enemies, power and revenge, in short, how to live in a society that is at once fragrant with friendship, fraught with ambiguities, and seared by treachery." You are invited to look into the world of the Pashtun through the pages of Rohi Mataluna: Pashto Proverbs. This selection of 1,350 Pashto proverbs (mataluna) from the mountainous (rohi) Afghan borderlands, with English translation and cultural annotations, aims to preserve some of the original flavor of an oral literature that reflects a traditional culture now facing turmoil and inevitable change. This second edition has been completely updated, revised, and expanded with new material, while taking care to preserve and honor the original work of the first edition. It includes: -- Cultural background and context of the Afghan frontier -- Explanations of key words and concepts -- Examples of the use of texts in social situations -- Observations on the form and structure of proverbs -- Parallel and variant texts -- Background stories -- Index of key words, persons, and places This book will appeal to readers and students of Pashto and English, to scholars and tourists, to anthropologists and folklorists, and to all those interested in learning more about the Pashtun people of the Afghan frontier.
This book portrays the scene where corporate international trade agreements, a new neoliberal state regime, and a growing textile market have contributed to the becoming of a new class of Muslim female workers—who labor in Bangladesh’s apparel export factories under conditions of neoliberal capitalism. The garment kormi—often abstracted by the homogenizing category of the “garment worker”—remain lost in the statistics of development and empowerment or contrarily exploitation. Thereby, focusing on the everyday lives of garment kormi, i.e., workers’ stories than on the collective of garment workers as a category, this book at one front highlights the neoliberal structures of difference and inequality, and on the other reflects on the potential of egalitarianism and change in terms of novel ways of comprising and expressing life-worlds. It shows that the values in life and the structures that govern life, such as contemporary Bangladesh’s neoliberal order, kinship relationality, and religiosity, are co-constitutive, multi-layered, and always on the move, never fixed.

A city of stories – short, fragmented, amorphous, and at times contradictory – Tehran is an impossible tale to tell. For the capital city of one of the most powerful nations in the Middle East, its literary output is rarely acknowledged in the West. This unique celebration of its writing brings together ten stories exploring the tensions and pressures that make the city what it is: tensions between the public and the private, pressures from without – judgemental neighbours, the expectations of religion and society – and from within – family feuds, thwarted ambitions, destructive relationships. The psychological impact of these pressures manifests in different ways: a man wakes up to find a stranger relaxing in his living room and starts to wonder if this is his house at all; a struggling writer decides only when his girlfriend breaks his heart will his work have depth... In all cases, coping with these pressures leads us, the readers, into an unexpected trove of cultural treasures – like the burglar, in one story, descending into the basement of a mysterious antique collector’s house – treasures of which we, in the West, are almost wholly ignorant. Translated by: Sara Khalili, Sholeh Wolpé, Alireza Abiz, Caroline Croskery, Farzaneh Doosti, Shahab Vaezzadeh, Niloufar Talebi, Lida Nosrati, Susan Niazi and Poupeh Missaghi. Foreword by Orkideh Behrouzan. Developed in partnership with Visiting Arts. 'The aesthetic sensibility of Iranian culture appears, to the West, as mainly pre-modern, if not actually anti-modern... The fiction showcased in The Book of Tehran is a welcome corrective to this tendency... These stories feel decidedly contemporary in style and subject matter alike, with their protagonists' inner lives and interpersonal relationships at the fore.' - The Times Literary Supplement 'Fiction exploring the interior life of contemporary Iranians is not well represented in translations readily available in the West. The Book of Tehran aims to begin to redress the shortage...' - Asian Review of Books
Islam is an all inclusive way of life which covers the intellect and the real, the theoretical and the practical. The major part of the Islamic code of practice and behavior is formalised in the discipline of Islamic law which established itself as a discipline before other Islamic disciplines. The early Muslim jurisconsultants are to be credited as the pioneers of the development of the Islamic legal system. Shaikh Mohammad ibn Hasan ibn 'Ali Abu Ja'far al-Tusi (385-460 AH/995-1067 AD), who was given the honorary title of Shaikh al-Ta'ifat al-Imamiyyah (The Head of the Shi'a Islamic School) was at the orefront of these pioneers. His book Al-Nihayah fi Mojarrad al-Fiqh wa al-Fatawa (A Concise Description of Islamic Law and Legal Opinions) has been recognised as one of the major early sources, references and textbooks in the field of Islamic Law in general and of Shi'a Islamic law in particular. This book has been translated, edited and introduced by Professor A. Ezzati, and published by ICAS Press as the present volume.

It was a pleasant surprise for me Ashraf Chaudhry, a capable and inspiring professor of English Literature and my friend and my colleague of 35 years, turn into a forceful political analyst, an enlightened commentator of national and international affairs, and an active sponsor of interfaith harmony in a foreign land. I have been reading his discourses on varied subjects with interest and am always impressed by the deep thinking and extensive reading that goes into writing them. This collection is a valuable contribution and should be welcomed by those who wish to read thoughts of a mature Pakistani mind in real perspective. Prof. M. H. Hamdani, former Principal, F. G. Syed College, Rawalpindi ****** Mr. Ashraf Chaudhry is one of Pakistan Link's most distinguished writers. His articles are studded with facts and figures that are strikingly revealing and wholly incontrovertible. The more learned and serious-minded readers admire Mr. Chaudhry for his insight, scholarship, and perspicacity. Akhtar Mahmud Faruqui, editor, Pakistan Link. ****** "In Rawalpindi, Professor Ashraf Chaudhry and I were neighbors. He was my senior. When the sub continent was divided in 1947, and PAkistan emerged as a new State, our parents migrated from the Indian territory to Pakistan. Prof. Chaundhry was a very brilliant and hard working student from his very childhood. He is a self-made man. I have read some of his articles and columns in the Pakistan Link. I was much impressed by the candidness and clarity of vision he brings to his writings. He supports democrary and condemns dictaorship. He writes on human rights and human values and believes in the presence of goodness in all human beings. He rejects sectarian and radical approach in religion, and stresses on the need of a pluralist aspect of religion. Often he underpins the problems, offers cautiously some solutions, and is never hesitant in naming the culprits. He rewards and censures the same political actors, depending on their performance, and hold no personal grudge against any one of them." Dr. Maqsood Jafri, author and political activist.

“Imam Hussain And Yazid” the English version of the book “Syed-ul-Shuhada Hazrat Imam Hussain Aur Yazidiat” by Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen Hazrat Sakhi Sultan Mohammad Najib-ur-Rehman sheds light on those aspects of the battle of Karbala which have been concealed by the other writers. It tells the difference between two systems, Hussainism and Yazidism, apart from the description of the valour and heroism of the sacred progeny of Prophet Mohammad and their Companions. The author has highlighted Hussain’s Faqr, the essence of the whole philosophy, which has been untouched by the tellers of the significance of the battle. It also debates upon the advocacy on Yazid by his advocates, logically and with authentic references. The novel Defeated Muslim Jihad is based on the realities and living in our century when human beings die in captivity of religion and under the shoes of clerics of religions and sects. And they do not pass over any human being, prophets, or God, and they sacrifice the world and humans and humanity for their souls and desires in order to achieve their evil gratification. In order to reach Satan and rely on the seat of Satan’s power and place his crown on their heads and take the power over the world, not only do they sacrifice human beings for their aspirations, but even sacrifice God and prophets for their satanic aspirations and souls behind the stronghold of religion and in the clothes of the prophets.
‘His marginalisation in dual cultures ascribed to him allows him a brilliant birds-eye view of both, which he employs in his bid to untangle the cultural mindsets he comes across’ Muslim News ‘Offers invaluable insights into how a modern cosmopolitan navigates the complex and delicate contours of faith, identity and belonging in an otherwise globally, interconnected world’ Ekow Nelson, reimagining Whether negotiating the mind-games of the Israeli intelligence services or performing ablutions in a London bathroom, Mohammad Chowdhury’s life as a British Muslim travelling the world brings daily challenges. Border Crossings is the story of Chowdhury’s journey, gripping in some parts and shame-inducing in others, as he describes a lifelong struggle to reconcile the British, Asian and Muslim sides of his identity, constantly dealing with the mistrust of Westerners alongside the hypocrisies of his own community and their misunderstanding of Islam. Chowdhury's story echoes the experience of thousands of Western Muslims who since 9/11 have been subjected to a constant barrage of questions that cast doubt over the very goodness of their faith. It is the story of a man who cries when England win the Ashes, yet still finds himself screaming in the face of racism and religious bigotry. This timely book powerfully rejects the poisonous narrative that Muslims can no longer be trusted as honest citizens of the West.
In Translating the Garden, Ghanoonparvar offers readers an "over the shoulder" view of himself in the actual process of translating Shahrokh Meskub's Goftogu dar Bagh (Dialogue in the Garden) from Persian into English. This short philosophical work uses a conversation between a writer and a painter to delve into the Persian psyche and explore Persian perceptions of art, literature, nature, identity, spirituality, and the world in general. As he translates the text, Ghanoonparvar illustrates and discusses the myriad decisions that a literary translator faces, from word choices to the problems of conveying cultural concepts and deciphering authorial intent. He also compares some of his translated passages with those of other translators to highlight the uniqueness of each act of translation. The complete English translation of Dialogue in the Garden rounds out the volume."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved
Since the 1979 revolution, scholars and policy makers alike have tended to see Iranian political actors as religiously driven—dedicated to overturning the international order in line with a theologically prescribed outlook. This provocative book argues that such views have the link between religious ideology and political order in Iran backwards. Religious Statecraft examines the politics of Islam, rather than political Islam, to achieve a new understanding of Iranian politics and its ideological contradictions. Mohammad Ayatollahi Tabaar traces half a century of shifting Islamist doctrines against the backdrop of Iran’s factional and international politics, demonstrating that religious narratives in Iran can change rapidly, frequently, and dramatically in accordance with elites’ threat perceptions. He argues that the Islamists’ gambit to capture the state depended on attaining a monopoly over the use of religious narratives. Tabaar explains how competing political actors strategically develop and deploy Shi’a-inspired ideologies to gain credibility, constrain political rivals, and raise mass support. He also challenges readers to rethink conventional wisdom regarding the revolution, Ayatollah Khomeini, the U.S. embassy hostage crisis, the Iran-Iraq War, the Green Movement, nuclear politics, and U.S.–Iran relations. Based on a micro-level analysis of postrevolutionary Iranian media and recently declassified documents as well as theological journals and political memoirs, Religious Statecraft constructs a new picture of Iranian politics in which power drives Islamist ideology.
Eighteen months after Iran’s Islamic Revolution in 1979, hundreds of thousands of the country’s women participated in the Iran-Iraq War (1980–88) in a variety of capacities. Iran was divided into women of conservative religious backgrounds who supported the revolution and accepted some of the theocratic regime’s depictions of gender roles, and liberal women more active in civil society before the revolution who challenged the state’s male-dominated gender bias. However, both groups were integral to the war effort, serving as journalists, paramedics, combatants, intelligence officers, medical instructors, and propagandists. Behind the frontlines, women were drivers, surgeons, fundraisers, and community organizers. The war provided women of all social classes the opportunity to assert their role in society, and in doing so, they refused to be marginalized. Despite their significant contributions, women are largely absent from studies on the war. Drawing upon primary sources such as memoirs, wills, interviews, print media coverage, and oral histories, Farzaneh chronicles in copious detail women’s participation on the battlefield, in the household, and everywhere in between.
Architectural inscriptions are a fascinating aspect of Islamic cultural heritage because of their rich and diverse historical contents and artistic merits. These inscriptions help us understand the advent of Islam and its gradual diffusion in Bengal, which eventually resulted in a Muslim majority region, making the Bengali Muslims the second largest linguistic group in the Islamic world. This book is an interpretive study of the Arabic and Persian epigraphic texts of Bengal in the wider context of a rich epigraphic tradition in the Islamic world. While focusing on previously untapped sources, it takes a fresh look into the Islamic inscriptions of Bengal and examines the inner dynamics of the social, intellectual and religious transformations of this eastern region of South Asia. It explores many new inscriptions including Persian epigraphs that appeared immediately after the Muslim conquest of Bengal indicating an early introduction of Persian language in the region through a cultural interaction with Khurasan and Central Asia. In addition to deciphering and editing the epigraphic texts, the information derived from them has been analyzed to construct the political, administrative, social, religious and cultural scenario of the period. The first survey of the Muslim inscriptions in India ever to be attempted on this scale, the book reveals the significance of epigraphy as a source for Islamic history and culture. As such, it will be of interest to students and scholars of Asian Studies, Asian History and Islamic Studies.
Analysing the evolution of Lahore’s social organization, culture and ideologies since Pakistan’s independence in 1947, this book explores how social and cultural changes affect the social economy, spatial structure and the urban environment. It uncovers the internal dynamics and functional order of the city that sustain everyday life, despite its challenges and seemingly disorderly institutions. The book offers a strategic vision for the city’s development that emphasizes equitable policies for public utilities and the built environment. In addition, the author proposes a complementary programme for social development and civic ethos. This book will be a valuable resource for academics and students in the fields of urban planning, geography, urban studies and sociology and those interested in the urbanism of the global south, particularly Pakistan.
