This bibliography, first published in 1979, is a guide to serials and periodicals in Arabic, English, French and other European languages published in the Arab countries or in the Western hemisphere. Arab serials and periodicals are considered primary sources of information on subject matters related to the Arab world. Lack of comprehensive bibliographies of Arab serials in the English language has hindered the work of librarians and Middle East specialists who need to identify a large number of such publications published in and about the Arab world. This bibliography is a research tool designed specifically to fill that gap.

More than seventy years later, this interesting story has remained untold. August 1941 is the first detailed and documented account of the affair.

Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Interpreting / Translating , , course: translation, language: English, abstract: Culture-bound elements, such as proper names, food items, and idioms not only place the story of a book in a specific culture and period of time, but also imply certain values. These elements also have an effect on how the reader identifies with the story and characters. So, it is important to find the most appropriate strategy to translate such elements. The objective of this paper is to find out what the most frequently used strategy in translation of culture-specific items in children’s literature is. To this end, Venuti’s (1995) model of domestication and foreignization strategies was adopted as the framework. The culture-bound terms were classified based on Toponyms, Anthroponyms, Means of transportation, Date, Food and Drink, Idioms, Measuring system, Scholastic reference. In the process of tracking down the culture-specific items the model proposed by Pedersen (2005) has been used. To collect and analyze the data, first, the researcher compared ten successive pages, selected randomly, of each of the selected English children’s stories (Daddy long legs by Jean Webster, Anne- of- Green-Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery, the Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain, and The Prince and the Pauper by Mark Twain) with their Persian translation to identify culture-specific items. Next, the strategies used by the translator were identified and their frequency was calculated. The results, then, were presented in some tables. According to the obtained results, although both domesticating and foreignizing strategies have been used, foreignization has been the most dominant cultural translation strategy in children’s literature.

Occupied Iran in World War II became the most important supply route to Russia and source of fuel to the Allies. Having pledged to meet Iran’s “minimum needs”, the Allies commandeered the means of transport, seized food and fuel, severely restricted imports, forced Iran to print money, brought Polish refugees from Russia, and initially did little to contain the chaos and insecurity. The resulting famine and typhus epidemic of 1942-43 had claimed 4 million lives amounting to a quarter of the population. This was in addition to the 8-10 million lost in the Great Famine of 1917-19. Iran’s 1944 population was the same as 1900, a perfect case of a Malthusian Catastrophe. Having previously described the World War I famine, and using US diplomatic, military, and intelligence records, as well as primary British sources, Majd completes the task by also telling the story of the World War II Iranian famine.

As in many developing countries, the prospects for land reform in Iran seemed promising. It was expected to improve rural poverty and stimulate agricultural development by replacing the traditional landlord-peasant system with more peasant-biased, modern farming. This book assesses the economic consequences of land reform, focusing particularly on its effect on the living standards of the rural poor. Amid describes a ‘biomodal’ system of large and small farms that emerged after the reform. Large farms, with government support, modernized and grew more profitable cash crops, whereas small farms found difficulty in obtaining credit and continued to rely on traditional techniques and staple food crops. Land reform was not, the author argues a success for the majority of the Iranian rural population who experienced virtually no improvement in living standards and a growth of rural inequality as a result.

Due to the advances of various methods for the prediction of toxicity of organic compounds and ionic liquids (ILs), it is necessary to review these methods for scientists and students. It is essential to compare the advantages and shortcomings of these methods. Since many organic compounds and ILs are synthesized each year, this book introduces suitable models for the assessment of their toxicities. This book reviews the best predictive methods for the prediction of toxicity of organic compounds and ILs, which were derived by in vitro or in vivo experiments. Different available quantitative structure‐toxicity relationship (QSTR) models based on various descriptors have been discussed to predict toxicity parameters such as LD50 (50% lethal dose), EC50 (the concentration of the desired IL that produces mortality of 50 percent of the bacterial population) and log(IGC50-1) (logarithm of 50% growth inhibitory concentration of T. pyriformis) of various classes of organic compounds and ILs. The reliability of these methods is compared and discussed. Each chapter contains some complimentary problems with their answers, which can improve the experience of students and researchers. The introduced subjects are suitable for advanced students in chemistry, biochemistry, medicinal chemistry, and chemical engineering.

This thesis describes the research done regarding communication reliability when using the Internet to realize the communications for cyber-physical systems (CPSs). In a nutshell, the book first presents the obtained results from real-world measurements describing the reliability of today’s Internet in terms of the availability and diversity of a wide set of end-to-end paths in the Internet. After that, the book describes a new approach along with its realization as a transport protocol to improve reliability and enable the utilization of Internet within future CPSs.
