The words are Madame de Salzmann's, from the final page of her book The Reality of Being. I read them and feel good. For a moment I experience "the peace that passeth understanding." At that same moment I realize my incapacity and my non-comprehension and I feel bad. Stabbed in the heart by "the sword of gnosis" I want to run away, fall back into complacency. I see how I am, divided. Do I care? So long as I remain trapped in passivity, nothing new can appear: no Newness, no New Man, no New World. Do I really wish to explore the Unknown? Or am I only an armchair adventurer, a dreamer vicariously gaining the experience from another's travels? How can I know myself? My journey to inaccessible places begins with seeing that I am two: I wish, I do not wish. The act of seeing itself is the appearance of I." Not the ordinary "I" that is deeply afraid and wishes only for security, but the real "I," pure, uncontaminated by fear, grounded in love. "Without it I will never know what is true, never enter a world entirely new." Her words convey deep meaning, far deeper than we ordinarily realize. To discover the New World requires knowing how to measure. Without the science of measures I cannot go far. "It is my measure, the measure both of my capacity and of the quality of my moment of work." Knowing the code of measures, I can decipher the reality of who I am. This book provides the keys to the code.

Each element of the jewel is imbued with significance which he delineates, the circle of diamonds indicating they have come full circle, are joined together again. The second gift is a photo album Goldie made, recreating their history, with pictures of places in their home town. On the last photo, of his school locker, he writes This is where we met between classes for 90 seconds, because we couldnt bear to be apart. Mitzi breaks her foot. At home, in pain, she reflects on Goldies marital status and writes him an e-mail saying In my experience married men dont leave, they simply break your heart. Please dont break my heart. He takes offense that she would question his integrity and motivation and suggests they go on hiatus until he has progress to report. She is devastated, sends a flurry of e-mails, begs forgiveness. They continue stronger than before. A new trip is planned, this time to Washington, D.C. It turns out to be both heaven and hell. It is heaven because the relationship is so strong, so close. He opens his heart about how bad his marriage is and his plans to end it. It is hell because they are both unwell. He suggests a third trip, to Niagara Falls. She knows this is the trip that will make all the difference, will cement their God given union. Then the unthinkable happens.

Writing provided a creative outlet when Mitzis physical limitations prohibited her from working with her beloved metal, and a vehicle for writing down memories that would have been lost had she not committed them to the written word. Her family is very grateful that she did. Rebekah compiled these letters/essays after Mitzi died in November 2006. It was a way to help her cope with her immense grief, and she felt closer to her mother as she read and re-read the material. Rebekah and Mitzi always talked about compiling these letters into a book, but never quite got around to it. Mitzi was none too happy with her daughters coaxing her into the computer age, but we now know from these writings that she was glad she did. Reading these memories now made Rebekah wish she could ask her mother a million more questions, and she hopes that publishing these stories will keep her mothers memory and a way of life gone by alive for future generations. This little book was compiled primarily as a legacy for Mitzis family and friends. If other readers find this material, and are encouraged to write down their familys stories and history, so much the better.

He has achieved business and financial success beyond my wildest dreams. She has struggled through a series of job losses as a single mother. He lives on a thousand acre cattle ranch in Texas. She lives simply in Hawai`i. Because of her past disappointing love life Mitzi continues to be fearful of being hurt. In addition to daily heartfelt e-mails, Goldie sends Mitzi meaningful gifts as proof of his commitment. It is when he sends a note along with a signed first edition of a book intended to give her comfort that she has her watershed moment. He writes I do want it back someday but only if your hand places it upon the book shelf. She cries. This is when Mitzi first trusts, believes there truly is a future with Goldie, they are meant to be. She writes to him that she wants to get together. He is thrilled that she has overcome her fear. They begin making plans to meet in San Francisco.
