Mitzi and Goldie went steady in 1962/63 back in Liberty, Massachusetts. Mitzi receives an e-mail from Goldie in September, 2010. He tells her she is the love of his life, the motivation behind his actions, at the center of it all. Mitzi is tentatively pleased to hear from Goldie, but since he is married she is concerned that their communication is 'cheating' and tells him she does not want to be the 'other woman'. He opens his heart and confides to her that his marriage is miserable and he is on the path to effect change in his life. He does not want to demean their reconnection as something wrong. Their lives have been reversed in adulthood. He came from humble beginnings, she from privilege. Her parents did not find him 'worthy' of her. He has achieved business and financial success 'beyond my wildest dreams'. She has struggled through a series of job losses as a single mother. He lives on a thousand acre cattle ranch in Texas. She lives simply in Hawai`i. Because of her past disappointing love life Mitzi continues to be fearful of being hurt. In addition to daily heartfelt e-mails, Goldie sends Mitzi meaningful gifts as proof of his commitment. It is when he sends a note along with a signed first edition of a book intended to give her comfort that she has her watershed moment. He writes 'I do want it back someday – but only if your hand places it upon the book shelf'. She cries. This is when Mitzi first trusts, believes there truly is a future with Goldie, they are meant to be. She writes to him that she wants to get together. He is thrilled that she has overcome her fear. They begin making plans to meet in San Francisco.

This is a remarkable book. It is the story of just one person but it is repeated time and time again by many, all over the world. She has a complex but potentially curable cancer from the outset - one that requires a surgical intervention, radiotherapy and chemotherapy to treat optimally. So Mitzi experiences everything. With a young and very active family to look after, she has a lot to live for so how she deals with uncertainty is fascinating. The disruption to her life by the cancer and its treatment is massive and to add to it all she is going through a marital breakdown at the same time.I feel it's an incredible privilege to be allowed to follow her journey so closely. 'This is essential reading for all who deal with cancer patients - health professionals, politicians, health service developers, carers and, of course, patients themselves. It clearly gives us a distillation of what cancer patients want. We need to create a new network of modern cancer centres where the latest technology in radiotherapy and chemotherapy is seamlessly delivered in a comfortable, welcoming environment. Novel information technology can be used to link the centres so every patient will be monitored to get the best possible treatment.

As the suffragette movement was becoming increasingly militant what was the Conservative reaction to successive parliamentary bills on women's suffrage and what was the level of support for votes for women within the Tory party? After the 1867 Reform Bill, Conservatives were hesitant about supporting further measures to widen the franchise. Although a few party members supported John Stuart Mill's proposal for women's suffrage, and some notable individual Conservative women were part of the early organised campaigns for female enfranchisement, the period before the 1880s saw little interest in this issue among the party faithful. It was only when the grassroots Primrose League was created in 1883 that the suffrage question was taken up by a number of its women members.One of the most significant gaps in our knowledge of the British women's suffrage movement is how the Conservative Party dealt with this controversial issue. In this important reassessment of Conservative women's suffrage, Mitzi Auchterlonie looks at the political activities of Conservative women between 1867 and 1914. As the campaigning by the women's suffrage societies intensified and became more militant, Conservative suffragists responded by founding the Conservative and Unionist Women's Franchise Association (CUWFA) in 1908. This became the third largest women's suffrage party of the pre-World War One period.Auchterlonie looks at the activities of this organisation and its publication "The Conservative and Unionist Women's Franchise Review" in depth, enabling readers to understand the social, political, economic and imperial issues which most concerned Conservative suffragists. She charts their campaigning activities at local and national level using primary sources including memoirs of prominent Conservative supporters of women's suffrage. She discusses the relationship between the CUWFA and politicians of all parties as well as their links with other suffrage organisations. Auchterlonie concludes that Conservative women, dismissed by some as marginal to suffrage history, played a significant part in the suffrage campaigns, while the party itself contained an unexpectedly diverse range of views towards the idea of votes for women.
