Sometimes the pen and paper are my best friends. I love the conversations we have. I come from a family of soldiers and as a daughter and wife of naval officers, the Armed Forces have a very special place in my heart. I have dedicated this book to the men and women of our Armed Forces and also to other unsung heroes, some dear to me and some who have touched me in a way that I was compelled to pen my thoughts about them in poems. I probe the hidden soul of a world not known to many. There are so many people who have given our world so much depth and stories. They remain unknown yet go through life with a quiet strength that must not be mistaken for weakness. I start and end my pages with a poem of tribute to the Soldier… I write unconventionally, just letting the words flow. I have allowed myself that liberty so that I may express myself freely exploring what I am a part of and surrounded by. This is my reality. Each poem is different from the other but there is an underlying common factor in many, a slight sense of pathos. There is a tangible sense of poignancy in the air, a feeling of sadness in the way our world is evolving today, and that emotion finds a path into many of the lines I write.
Pick me up, my poetry calls, I will tell you tales versed in rhyme and rhythm. Let me begin with an avatar called woman. Sense her dilemma as she moonlights in RED. Become aware of her as she tantalizes you in HUSHED IN MY THINK THE WOMAN IN ME. Experience her sensuality in SUMMER RAIN. An aura of haunting calm surrounds a river in flow. Resonating chants BY THE GANGES evokes a sense of peace and serenity. Eerie the silence of a loom in an abandoned room speaks of a bygone era and a forgotten craft in THE WEAVER. A photographer clicks a picture of an unknown girl. He feels a psychic pull in her eyes. One day he reads about a girl who is found mysteriously dead. It is THE GIRL IN THE PHOTOGRAPH. In THE PIGEON MAN AND HIS SOLDIER BIRDS I verse lines against a backdrop of the devastating World War One. Carrier Pigeons played a vital part as they proved to be an extremely reliable way of sending messages. The pigeon lofts with their Pigeon Man advanced with the soldiers. Every person has their own story, yet an echo overlaps. I express these stories through my poetry and as my lines unfold I realize there is a bit of everyone in all of us. So ..Dont stop, keep the pages turning, it doesnt end here. I will leave you to discover the rest
Between a Breath and a Pause, Life is a Story… is dedicated to those who exist between a ‘Breath and a Pause’. It covers just about everyone who fought the good fight called life. Find yourself again as you get drawn into these pages of recollections, short stories, anecdotes and poems. This book starts with a story inspired by the real-life, heartfelt journey of a young woman during partition and after that. The Journey: A young woman of twenty was one of the victims of the deadly mass migration. Born in Delhi, Saloni was adopted by her aunt and brought up in Rawalpindi. Barely had she finished college when the violence began. Soon after, the British announced the partition of India. Amidst death and a morbid fear for their lives, many fled, leaving everything behind. Some got away with just the clothes on their backs. Many didn’t make it beyond their front door. Surviving the holocaust and then the mental pain of living in a refugee camp in Delhi, Saloni grew up to be a fiercely independent woman who faced many more challenges throughout her life. “I did my best. Life has not been easy.” she would say out loud to the birds flying in the dusky sky. Just as pain and suffering are a part of life, so is happiness. It is possible to find that niche again. She was taught as a child to search for answers, but there are no explanations for certain things and there was no point in asking ‘why’. All answers cannot be found in one lifetime.
