An unemployed university graduate girl and an Occupy Wall Street terrorist leave in their wake a string of violent murders and newspaper headlines that catch the imagination of the Depression-struck Singapore. Singaporeans are proud to have been held up by them; to their victims, the duo is doing what nobody else has the guts to do. To the law, the two are terrorists who deserve to be gunned down where they stand.
Throughout history, men have repeatedly made judgments regarding their own conduct and that of their fellow men. Some acts have been judged to be right or good, while other acts have been denounced as wrong or evil. Ethical judgment in medicine, as in other areas of life, is an attempt to distinguish between good and bad conduct. This book is based on three lectures given by the author as the Medical Director of Eye Clinic Singapura International. The first lecture was an address delivered to medical undergraduates at the National University of Singapore in 1975. The second was a Commonwealth Medical Association lecture delivered a decade ago. The third was a Singapore Medical Association lecture delivered in 1981. This volume, emphasizing the principles of medical ethics, has been kept simple and brief, and it is hoped that it will make interesting reading for both medical professionals and the general public.
Just 10 years ago, ophthalmic research was almost unheard of in Singapore. With little money and no infrastructure, ophthalmologists and scientists expressed scant interest in research. Today, however, ophthalmic research in Singapore is at a high international level, as exemplified by the activities of the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI), which is capable of competing with and challenging the world's leading eye research centers. Indeed, the world-class research carried out at SERI has helped to extend Singapore's international reach as the country moves towards its goal of becoming a global city and a leading nation influencing developments across Asia and the world. This book summarizes a decade of hard work, dedication, and commitment by a handful of doctors and researchers in their efforts to establish SERI and ensure its success. In particular, the remarkable contributions of two of Singapore's ophthalmic pioneers, the late Associate Professor Chew Sek Jin and current Professor Donald Tan, are acknowledged. The book will inspire leaders of developing nations in visualizing how research can develop rapidly in their own country, and how support and facilities may materialize if they can gather a few dedicated, intelligent researchers.
This book examines connections between policy contexts, school experiences and everyday activities of children growing up in the global city of Singapore. In particular, it explores how Singapore children’s everyday experiences inside and outside of school shape their orientations towards educational success. Alongside an analysis of school life and educational policies, it also considers children’s out-of-school activities, including leisure, homework, and enrichment activities, and connections between these and their school-based activities. The book draws on empirical data from Primary 4 classes in two Singapore schools in the form of student-completed surveys, classroom ethnographies, student responses to a learning dialogues activity, and a re-enactment of one child's out-of-school life, as well as curriculum and policy analysis. It provides readers with an in-depth understanding of Singapore Primary 4 children’s experiences inside and outside of school, including the structure of timetables and pedagogical approaches encountered in school lessons, children’s enjoyment of activities inside and outside of school, children’s engagement and wellbeing at school, and the impact of Singapore’s educational policies on children’s learning experiences. Moving beyond a simplistic focus on Singapore children’s academic performance in international high-stakes testing, the book offers a comprehensive exploration of their lives inside and outside of school. This holistic approach is unique in the Singapore context and contributes to a greater understanding of children’s everyday lives in the city.
The future was hopeless. What a frustrating world! Singapore has a lot of people, six million to be exact. But what happens when there aren’t enough good jobs to go around and a lot of people wind up at the bottom, that’s what. In this powerful and riveting novel, literary phenomenon Lim Han Ming unflinchingly exposes the inner-workings of unemployment and foreign talent in the twenty-first century, and reminds us of the passions and malice that office politics can provoke. When an organisation sacks an employee, the event sends unforeseeable shockwaves through the lives of three people who are chained to the events. The Sacking shows how one’s sacking can change the way people think about how they live, what they want, and what they believe forever. An unflinching examination of the human heart's capacity for sorrow, joy, redemption, vengeance and endless gradations in between.
A spherical actuator is a novel electric device that can achieve 2/3-DOF rotational motions in a single joint with electric power input. It has advantages such as compact structure, low mass/moment of inertia, fast response and non-singularities within the workspace. It has promising applications in robotics, automobile, manufacturing, medicine and aerospace industry. This is the first monograph that introduces the research on spherical actuators systematically. It broadens the scope of actuators from conventional single-axis to multi-axis, which will help both beginners and researchers to enhance their knowledge on electromagnetic actuators. Generic analytic modeling methods for magnetic field and torque output are developed, which can be applied to the development of other electromagnetic actuators. A parametric design methodology that allows fast analysis and design of spherical actuators for various applications is proposed. A novel non-contact high-precision 3-DOF spherical motion sensing methodology is developed and evaluated with experiments, which shows that it can achieve one order of magnitude higher precision than conventional methods. The technologies of nondimensionalization and normalization are introduced into magnetic field analysis the first time, and a benchmark database is established for the reference of other researches on spherical actuators.
Many of the challenges of medical ethics today were nonexistent during the time when Hippocrates wrote his famous oath. In an increasingly complex world, many more new ethical issues will impact on the practice of medicine in the 21st century: quality care, growing patient demand, high technology, the definition of death, and controversies relating to the right to live and the right to die. In addition, there will be questions raised with regard to issues and practices such as research on embryos, genetic engineering, experiments on animals and clinical trials, and the problems of limited medical resources. These can lead to grave dilemmas, causing uncertainty and confusion in the medical profession. This book is based on the lectures and essays on medical ethics by a number of leading Singapore doctors. It records the thoughts of the leaders on medical ethics, and discusses a range of important and controversial issues. It will be a valuable reference for medical students as well as interesting and informative reading for both the professional and the lay reader.

The practice of increasing a products perceived value to the customer - known as brand management - has grown out of all proportion to its original foundations, leading some to use the term "obsessive branding disorder" in recent years. Most introductions to brand management concentrate on how marketing managers can "do" branding in practise, this much needed textbook brings a more scholarly perspective to proceedings. Ming Lim critically introduces the subject of Global Branding by comparing and contrasting examples from emerging economies as well as the Western world. The textbook is enhanced by taking in perspectives from outside the world of mainstream marketing - with sociological, cultural and political viewpoints addressed comprehensively. This innovative textbook slam dunks in as the most appropriate reading for any class on global branding. It should also form essential reading for a range of class from international marketing, through brand management, international business and critical marketing.
