This book investigates two types of static multi-fidelity surrogates modeling approaches, sequential multi-fidelity surrogates modeling approaches, the multi-fidelity surrogates-assisted efficient global optimization, reliability analysis, robust design optimization, and evolutionary optimization. This chapter treats several approaches for employing nanophotonics or near-nanophotonics concepts to create low-power switches. The partly interrelated issues of low-power dissipation and small device footprint are elucidated and figures of merit for switches formulated. Both optically and electronically controlled optical switches are treated and the crucial role of material development emphasized, illustrated by several examples, including both theoretical analysis of switch concepts and experimentally realized switches. Thus, electronically controlled switches based on hybrid, metamaterial, and nanoparticle plasmonics, electrooptic polymers as well as switches based on silicon and photonic crystals are discussed. The all-optical switches focus on third-order nonlinear effects and carrier-induced refractive index changes in III–V materials, as well as on emerging concepts of near-field-coupled quantum-dot switches. A brief comparison to electronic switches is done.

This book is about Zhejiang University, one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in China, which was forced to evacuate from the Hangzhou when the Japanese arrived in 1937 and began torturing civilians, raping women, bombing towns, burning farms, and destroying factories, homes, schools, and libraries. The faculty, staff, and students fled to a succession of towns where they sought refuge from the war and set up temporary classrooms to continue with their educational mission. This exodus lasted eight years and spanned over a thousand miles. They faced constant fear and worry due to malnutrition, disease, abject poverty, and enemy air strikes. But with the resilience and spirit of its faculty and students, the University survived to help revitalize a devastated nation.
Multimodalities and Chinese Students’ L2 Practices: Identity, Community, and Literacy explores the complex relations and interactions among multimodality, positioning, and agency in increasingly digitized, multilingual, and multicultural contexts. Min Wang uses interview narratives, WeChat exchanges, and class observations and field notes of three Chinese international students’ lived experiences of English learning to show that these L2 learners recognized and appropriated multiple modes and digital tools for their L2 literacies practices. They used multimodalities to position themselves as L2 users who are confident, able, and competent, but sometimes also struggling and ambivalent. The practice of meaning-making, remaking, designing, and redesigning demonstrated their agency as L2 learners. Positioned as cultural and social beings, these L2 learners presented their self-understandings and self-representations through symbolic and material artifacts, interactions with local and non-local people, and engagement in WeChat discussions and ELI learning. They assumed rights, obligations, and expectations in order to become legitimate community members. In the process their agency was promoted, negotiated, or sometimes limited by micro-social structures and ongoing interactions.
