“Absolutely fantastic.” -Kendare Blake, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Three Dark Crowns series “Heart-pounding.” -Buzzfeed * “Masterful.” -School Library Journal, starred review In this dark, sweeping fantasy perfect for fans of Girls of Paper and Fire and Wicked Saints, Princesses Lu and Min find themselves on opposite sides of a war to rule their Empire. Sisters Lu and Min have always known their places as the princesses of the Empire of the First Flame: assertive Lu will be named her father's heir and become the dynasty's first female ruler, while timid Min will lead a quiet life in Lu's shadow. Until their father names a new heir--their male cousin, Set. Determined to reclaim her birthright, Lu goes in search of allies, leaving Min to face the volatile court alone. Lu soon crosses paths with Nokhai, the lone, unlikely survivor of the Ashina, a clan of nomadic wolf shapeshifters. Nok never learned to shift--or to trust the empire that killed his family--but working with the princess might be the only way to unlock his true power. As Lu and Nok form a tenuous alliance, Min's own hidden power awakens, a forbidden, deadly magic that could secure Set's reign . . . or allow her to claim the throne herself. But there can only be one emperor, and the sisters' greatest enemy could very well turn out to be each other. This sweeping fantasy set against a world of ancient magic and political intrigue weaves an unforgettable story of ambition, betrayal, and sacrifice.

While the past 40 years have seen significant declines in adult smoking, this is not the case among young adults, who have the highest prevalence of smoking of all other age groups. At a time when just about everyone knows that smoking is bad for you, why do so many college students smoke? Is it a short lived phase or do they continue throughout the college years? And what happens after college, when they enter the “real world”? Drawing on interviews and focus groups with hundreds of young adults, Lighting Up takes the reader into their everyday lives to explore social smoking. Mimi Nichter argues that we must understand more about the meaning of social and low level smoking to youth, the social contexts that cause them to take up (or not take up) the habit, and the way that smoking plays a large role in students’ social lives. Nichter examines how smoking facilitates social interaction, helps young people express and explore their identity, and serves as a means for communicating emotional states. Most college students who smoked socially were confident that “this was no big deal.” After all, they were “not really smokers” and they would only be smoking for a short time. But, as graduation neared, they expressed ambivalence or reluctance to quit. As many grads today step into an uncertain future, where the prospect of finding a good job in a timely manner is unlikely, their 20s may be a time of great stress and instability. For those who have come to depend on the comfort of cigarettes during college, this array of life stressors may make cutting back or quitting more difficult, despite one’s intentions and understandings of the harms of tobacco. And emerging products on the market, like e-cigarettes, offer an opportunity to move from smoking to vaping. Lighting Up considers how smoking fits into the lives of young adults and how uncertain times may lead to uncertain smoking trajectories that reach into adulthood.

A selection of papers presented at the Symposium on English Literature by Asian authors entitled Asian Voices in English held at The University of Hong Kong, 27-30 April 1990. Two kinds of writing experience are focused upon: one is the experience of post-colonial writers, who are re-appropriating the English language for their own cultural purposes. The other is the experience of immigrant writers, who bring an Asian view to bear on the culture of the English-speaking countries in which they live.
Princess Lu knows that the throne of the Empire of the First Flame rightfully belongs to her. After all, she is the late Emperor's firstborn and has trained for the role all her life. And she can't forget made a promise to shapeshifter Nok, the boy she came to love, to win justice for his now powerless people. But even with an army at her side, Lu will need to face down a major obstacle: the current sitting Empress, her once beloved younger sister, Min. Princess Min used to live in Lu's shadow. But now she can control a powerful, ancient magic, and she's determined to use it to forge her own path and a strong future for the Empire, even if that means making enemies in court. But Min's magic isn't entirely under her control, and she must learn how to tame it before it consumes her . . . and the entire realm. Lu and Min are set for a confrontation that can't be stopped. But the Empire faces threats greater than their rivalry, and even if they choose to stand together, it could cost them both the throne-or their lives.

Sean Connery appearing in your dreams? For Maggie it's more of a nightmare when he says he's sent from God... Sassy, inventive and irreverent fun in this sparkling debut novel.
As people, we all struggle with stress, moments of panic, times of confusion, and other times that we feel overwhelmed and we can't sleep. And if it was up to the devil, he would be more than happy to medicate all of us with his fake remedies of alcohol and drugs. He is an opportunist, experienced in using our problems, our vulnerability, our wounding, our pain, our traumatic past experiences to get us where he wants. He is good at offering temporary relief for deeper crises of the soul. This is my true story of God stepping into my messy, shattered, and broken family life and rescuing me. You see, freedom, according to Satan, is being away from God. I don't think my son had any idea of who the devil was or how cunning he could be. He befriends to destroy, he gives to take away. As a mother of an adult struggling with addiction, my life was paralyzed. Every breath increased my pain of hopelessness and despair. I felt afraid, alone, and abandoned by God. God seemed distant, absent, silent, and unconcerned. I felt like running, but there was no place to hide. Was God punishing me? Where and how did I go wrong? Sharing my painful journey was not an easy step. I tried at all costs to hide this painful part of my life. It took years in my classroom of pain for my mind to be unshackled by the Teacher, the Holy Spirit. I no longer need to hide nor be ashamed of my challenges with my prodigal son. Nevertheless, breaking free from shame, stigma, and judgment is a process that took years. When we only let others see the beautiful parts of our stories, avoiding our broken painful chapters, we mislead people, and perhaps they envy us for what they falsely think are perfect lives. Worse, we misrepresent the power of the good news that reaches down into our broken souls, hearts, and lives to provide peace from our broken pieces. Dear waiting, praying, and expecting parents of struggling children, I believe God wants to usher you to your own breakthrough, healing, and freedom. You can learn to relinquish your child(ren) to God. Do not lose hope. Have faith. In his time, he will make all things beautiful for us! God wastes nothing, even our pain.
Does Ulixes have a secret power? Why does the bully, Nero, Minerva's owls, and big trouble follow him wherever he goes? Join Ulixes and his friend, Britannicus, the nine-year-old heir to the Roman Empire, as they search for the stolen Statue of Minerva. Can the boys survive traitors, poison, and dungeons? Following Seneca the Sage’s advice, they calm their emotions and use clear heads, racing through Rome looking for the Sacred Token. Gaining the magic of wisdom, Ulixes learns to step back from the first flush of anger, and to enjoy each present moment in time. Ulixes, also called "Uli," is an eleven-year-old boy working in the fields trying to stay out of the way of Nero, the Roman Emperor's stepson. Nero, a year older, always appears at the most unexpected moments to give Uli a hard time. He has no idea why Nero dislikes him so much. Uli dreams of learning powerful, complex words that can be used in debates to help people see the truth. He often sneaks into the Senate to listen to his idol, Seneca the Sage. Seneca tutors the Favored Sons of the Roman Empire: Britannicus, Nero, and Titus. Uli wishes he could learn wisdom from the great philosopher, like the royal heirs. With the help of family and friends, Uli hesitantly becomes the servant of Seneca the Sage, who allows him to listen as he tutors. At his new job, Uli must use his wits to remain clear-headed around Nero. Suddenly the sacred Statue of Minerva is stolen from the garden of the emperor, Augustus Claudius. Uli and the young heir, Britannicus, forge a friendship and team up to find the statue and save the empire. During their adventures, the boys learn to let go of things they can't control. Uli takes wrestling lessons from a master and thinks they are useless. Or, perhaps he finds that they do come in handy at the right moment. He teaches Brittanicus how to play the cornu, a metallic instrument that his father uses to message troops in battle. In return, Brittanicus teaches Uli reading and writing. Uli will have to learn how to get along with the quick-witted Diana, the daughter of the Master of the Guards. Watch for Book 2, The Magical Needle of Cybele, from the 7 Tokens of Rome Series! Ulixes and Diana encounter river rapids, swamps, and rebels, as they attempt to rescue Britannicus and Nero, held captive in the Island of Britannia.

A young woman's art career begins to lift off as those around her succumb to addiction and alcoholism The Customer is Always Wrong is the saga of a young na ve artist named Madge working in a restaurant of charming drunks, junkies, thieves, and creeps. Oakland in the late seventies is a cheap and quirky haven for eccentrics and Mimi Pond folds the tales of the fascinating sleaze-ball characters that surround young Madge into her workaday waitressing life. Outrageous and loving tributes and takedowns of her co-workers and satellites of the Imperial Cafe create a snapshot of a time in Madge's life where she encounters who she is, and who she is not. Told in the same brash yet earnest style as her previous memoir Over Easy, Pond's storytelling gifts have never been stronger than in this epic, comedic, standalone graphic novel. Madge is right back at the Imperial with its great coffee and depraved cast, where things only get worse for her adopted greasy spoon family while her career as a cartoonist starts to take off.
Written by Mia Iwama Hastings as told to her by her mother Mimi Iwama, this is a true story unlike any other: the story of the flower-mountain Hanaokayama, a loving mother with a tragic secret, and a nine-year-old girl who learned how to conquer fear. Little Mi-chan is a sensitive, thoughtful child with a delicate constitution and powerful love for nature rivaled only by the strength of her devotion to her mother. At the tender age of nine, Mi-chan dutifully leaves everything behind to follow her mother on a life-changing journey to the top of Hanaokayama, the little flower mountain. There, she eagerly studies the life lessons her mother finds everywhere in the natural world surrounding them: the courageous sacrifice of a fallen cherry blossom, the boundless freedom of the roiling sea, and the impermanence of all things—from the softest rays of morning sunlight to the mightiest trees on the face of the mountain. Mi-chan fills the pages of a notebook with the words and images her mother parcels out for her every day on the mountain, each one a precious meditation on the meaning of life, freedom, mindfulness and the power of perspective. Living carefree among trees and wildflowers so colorful they seem to have been painted onto the mountain itself, young Mi-chan cannot know that her mother’s lessons will be the only thing left standing between her and the all-consuming fear of the unknown.
This is the fascinating story of an American family and their adventures set in the Semien mountains, the 8,000 feet highlands of northern Ethiopia. Dr. John Summerskill, the author's spouse, had been president of San Francisco State University during the student upheavals of the late 60s. He had a major run-in with then Governor of California, Ronald Reagan, about the handling of the student demonstrations. The Ford Foundation found the perfect candidate in Dr. Summerskill to be an advisor and administrator to the newly founded Haile Selassie I University in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Following the career trail of her husband, the author and her family moved into one of the great homes of Addis Ababa, situated on three acres of eucalyptus trees and lawns. There were lion cages but no lions; a mammoth aviary, but no birds. And the house had no furniture, but what a house, with round stone towers at each corner. Here, the thrilling adventures of an American family in Ethiopia begins. Taking two of their five children, Wendy and Robert, "kicking and screaming," the Summerskills began their odyssey in Ethiopia, a country with the oldest civilization in Africa. Two of the Summerskill's older children who came to visit were on a plane that was hijacked to Aden, Yemen. In this book, you will explore each of the thirteen provinces of Ethiopia with the author and her family, as they camp near remote lakes as far south as Kenya. The author tells in vivid detail of life in Ethiopia during the final years of Emperor Haile Selassie's reign. The bustling marketplace of the capital, Addis Ababa; learning to prepare spicy Ethiopian food; a close look at the last Ethiopian Emperor; radical student activism in Haile Selassie I University; the historical sites of Ethiopia such as Lalibela, Harar and Gondar; all these and more come alive in the author's recollection of her sojourn in Ethiopia"--Page 4 of cover.
In this series, there is no shortage of action, betrayal and bringing back the dead"--Paranormal Romance Guild on The Necromancer's Betrayal "If you enjoy an urban fantasy with a little romance and sex on the side, you'll probably enjoy The Necromancer's Seduction." --Bewitching Book Tours Magazine Between hell and a hard place . . . Before he died, necromancer Ruby Montagne's demon grandfather passed her his Death Essence--his power. And that would be good . . . if she had a clue how to use it. Unfortunately, the impending destruction of both of her worlds demands she figures it out--fast. She's got to stop an invasion of zombies from the bowels of hell. She has help from Xavier, the demon she's nicknamed the Big Bad. But while Xavier does teach her to control her new power, he's just setting her up for trouble. Bad trouble. Still, he's better than the demon High Inquisitor, who's obsessed with trying to kill her. Ruby's got even more trouble. She wants to regain the trust of her sometimes-lover, sometimes-adversary, Ewan--a demon warrior who's six-feet-plus of chiseled muscle and coiled sexuality. It'd be a lot easier if her beloved friend, Lysander, a powerful vampire, wouldn't keep trying to lure her into bed. In order to defeat the zombies she must find--and learn how to use--an ancient artifact that will keep the veil between the worlds from shattering. But there's a cost--the artifact feeds on souls. If she masters the artifact's power, she'll save both the human and demon worlds. But there's not much time . . . and the artifact is hungry. Will she forfeit her soul before she's able to fix the veil? Mimi Sebastian raised herself on books, an unhealthy dose of comics, and movies. When a career as a punk guitarist failed to materialize, she completed her degree in urban planning. By day, she debates the merits of transport oriented development. By night she writes about necromancers and pirates.
