In Translating Heidegger, Groth points to mistranslations as the root cause of misunderstanding Heidegger. In this unique study, Groth examines the history of the first English translations of Heidegger's works and reveals the elements of Heidegger's philosophy of translation.
The seven essays were written between 1989 and 2007 and published in peer-reviewed journals between 1995 and 2008, with the exception of "Eros in Existential Analysis," which was given as an invited lecture at the annual International Human Science Research Conference at Ramapo College. All have been revised for this collection. The concluding chapter contains a series of notes on therapeutic phenomenology from 2015-2016 on the existential approach to therapy.
Earlier versions of the first two chapters were published as PREPARATORY THINKING IN HEIDEGGER'S TEACHING. Chapter Three and its appendix comprise a whole, "The Telling Word," introducing my translation of the "Eisgeschichte" by Adalbert Stifter. An earlier version of Chapter Five appeared in PHILOSOPHY TODAY 25(2), Summer 1981, pp. 139-147, as "On the Fundamental Experience of Voice in Language," and in a French translation the following year as "L'Expérience Fondamentale de la Voix dans le Langage," in SPIRALES. JOURNAL INTERNATIONAL DE CULTURE, No. 16, June 1982, pp. 54-56. Chapters 4 and 6 were published for the first time in the first edition of THE VOICE THAT THINKS. Versions of the Heidegger Bibliography appeared in PREPARATORY THINKING IN HEIDEGGER'S TEACHING and in TRANSLATING HEIDEGGER, but it has been thoroughly revised and supplemented for this volume.

We can learn quite a bit about Heidegger just by scanning these chronologies, discerning a genetic progression in his thought, seeing not only what interests English translators, but also what interested him at the various stages of his career, and perhaps even gathering evidence to pinpoint the "turning(s)." Extensive cross-references enable easy movement among all categories.
Pericopes are cuttings and so are always items taken out of context. Sometimes, however, cuttings are sources of new growth when single stems with ragged ends are placed in a new medium, form roots, and grow over time into something full and whole. Most turn out to be merely ornamental and are destined for their opening and a short life. They provide some color and hasten to a dessicated demise. Archibald MacLeish wrote to me that he hoped to leave behind a few poems that would be hard to get rid of. These pericopes will likely be easy in the going away, and since they have now been cut away from me, I have no more say about them. A number of these cuttings are about boys, a group who are having a renaissance of interest everywhere. Like cuttings they have always had a hard time of it and deserve some special attention. All of these are love poems since each was written with someone in mind. They were written from the early 1970s on.
Education is about learning to think. Much of what we call thinking, however, is a hodge-podge of repetitious self-talk, opinion, and cutting and pasting of second-hand ideas. Moreover, thinking in the present has often been alien to scholars who were tempted to think abstractly. But life and thought belong together and require each other, as Plotinus pointed out many centuries ago: [T]he object of contemplation is living and life, and the two together are one (Ennead 3.8.8). Presently, many women and men in the academic world are thinking concretely within the context of their own lives and with acknowledged accountability to broader communities with whom they think and to whom they are answerable. The essays in this volume consider Christianity as an aspect of North American culture, bringing the critical tools of the academy to thinking about some of the perplexing and pressing problems of contemporary public life. Three interactive and interdependent themes traverse these essays: gender, the effects of media culture, and institutions. Each of these themes has been central to Margaret Miles's work for thirty years. Each understands corporeality as fundamental both to subjectivity and society. Despite Martin Heidegger’s influence on twentieth-century philosophy, understanding his way of thinking is difficult if one relies solely on the English translations of his work. Since Gilbert Ryle misjudged his work in a 1929 review of Sein und Zeit, Heidegger’s philosophy has remained an enigma to many scholars who cannot read the original German texts.
