Between 1995, when Mike Schmidt was inducted into the Hall of Fame, and the dawn of the recent "Steroid Era," when baseball's biggest names were as likely to appear before Congress as they were to play in the All-Star Game, our national pastime has devolved into a national punch line. Even though the past two years have witnessed the Red Sox' finally putting an end to the Curse of the Bambino and the White Sox' bringing a championship to the South Side of Chicago for the first time in eighty-seven years, the sad truth is that the 2005 and 2006 seasons may be remembered as much for the league's scandals and blockbuster free-agent signings as they are for historic accomplishments on the field. Something has gone horribly wrong with the game, and according to Schmidt, it's time to do something about it. Clearing the Bases is a much-needed call to arms by one of baseball's most respected players. Drawing on his experiences as a third baseman, a manager, and, most recently, a fan, Schmidt takes on everything from skyrocketing payrolls, callous owners, and unapproachable players to inflated statistics, and, of course, ersatz home run kings. With bold and spirited counsel, Schmidt offers his own prescription for restoring integrity to the game and bringing baseball back, once and for all, to its rightful place. More than just an old-timer's screed against the modern game, however, Clearing the Bases goes beyond the BALCO investigation and never-ending free-agent bonanzas that dominate the back pages. It also examines all that's right -- and what still needs work -- with our national pastime, including interleague play, expansion, and, most surprisingly, better all-around hitters. Riveting, wise, and illuminating, Clearing the Bases is a Hall of Famer's look at how Major League Baseball has lost its way and how it can head back home.
Winner of the Beverly Hills Book Award for Southern Fiction: “A precise, elaborate tale that shows just how menacing a family’s history can be” (Kirkus Reviews). When Randle’s mother becomes critically ill he rushes to her bedside to comfort her. As he puts her affairs in order, he expects to face long-suppressed memories and contemptuous siblings, but he does not expect to discover that in her younger years, while he was an unaware child, his mother was a feisty, courageous woman who bravely battled an abusive husband and made fateful decisions for the good of her children. Now she wants nothing more than to die with dignity, with her secrets intact. But Randle learns that her husband was not his birth father, that a wealthy man who is being extorted claims to be his birth father, and his mother hopes to take the secret of his biological father’s true identity to her grave. As he grapples with the implications for his own identity, Randle uncovers a murder no one knew had been committed and struggles to protect the unwitting man who intends to bequeath him millions of dollars. When he unravels his mother’s dark secrets he unlocks his own demons and is left with the agonizing choice between revenge and greed or forgiveness. “An intriguing who-done-it story that critiques antiquated social practices and values while remaining affectionate to its Georgia setting . . . A story centered on an all-around Southern family, complete with all the dying pageantry and tradition of passing generations in a changing South.” —Deep South magazine

True Stories That Go Beyond the Headlines Stories about athletes and coaches usually focus on their championships or their scandals. All the Good in Sports features 20 contemporary sports personalities who go beyond the headlines to candidly share how their relationship with Christ has helped them cope with a variety of difficulties, both professional and personal, and how in Christ they found victory in their personal lives. Many professing Christians in the sports world have achieved wealth and notoriety, but lifes luxuries do not exempt them from life's difficulties. Name recognition and personal fortune cannot rescue one whose marriage is on the rocks, one facing substance abuse, or one facing disease or even death. The sports heroes featured in All the Good in Sports are not super human.
Stalingrad is often described as the turning point of the German war with the Soviet Union, or perhaps even the entire European war. This paper argues that the actual turning point was probably earlier in the Barbarossa campaign, and that the decision to hold Stalingrad, while a serious mistake, followed several other strategic blunders of Adolf Hitler. Given that, this essay reflects a study of primary source material collected from key German commanders, as well as numerous documents collected in 1956 as part of the “Karlsruhe Collection.” The focus was to determine where the airlift failed, why it failed, and what could have been done better. Ultimately the failure could be attributed to the lack of a survivable and more capable transport aircraft, difficulties operating out of poorly prepared airfields which were under constant threat from the Red Army, the absolutely miserable weather which frequently prevented any flying at all, enemy action which prevented daylight flights by much of the fleet, supplies which were not ideally suited for airlift, and finally difficulties organizing the airlift at both ends. Many commanders involved knew it was bound to fail and warned Hitler and Paulus, to no avail. In the end, what could have been a tremendous feat ended as tragic folly.

The solar system most of us grew up with included nine planets, with Mercury closest to the sun and Pluto at the outer edge. Then, in 2005, astronomer Mike Brown made the discovery of a lifetime: a tenth planet, Eris, slightly bigger than Pluto. But instead of adding one more planet to our solar system, Brown’s find ignited a firestorm of controversy that culminated in the demotion of Pluto from real planet to the newly coined category of “dwarf” planet. Suddenly Brown was receiving hate mail from schoolchildren and being bombarded by TV reporters—all because of the discovery he had spent years searching for and a lifetime dreaming about. A heartfelt and personal journey filled with both humor and drama, How I Killed Pluto and Why It Had It Coming is the book for anyone, young or old, who has ever imagined exploring the universe—and who among us hasn’t?
This workbook and solutions manual is intended for advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate students as a supplement to a traditional course in numerical mathematics and as preparation for independent research involving numerical mathematics. The numerical algorithms presented are written in pseudocode and based on MATLAB, a programming and numeric computing platform widely used in STEM fields. Thus, no formal training in computer science or knowledge of any specific programming language is needed to parse the algorithms. Summing up: Recommended.'CHOICEMany students come to numerical linear algebra from science and engineering seeking modern tools and an understanding of how the tools work and their limitations. Often their backgrounds and experience are extensive in applications of numerical methods but limited in abstract mathematics and matrix theory. Often enough it is limited to multivariable calculus, basic differential equations and methods of applied mathematics. This book introduces modern tools of numerical linear algebra based on this background, heavy in applied analysis but light in matrix canonical forms and their algebraic properties. Each topic is presented as algorithmic ideas and through a foundation based on mostly applied analysis. By picking a path through the book appropriate for the level, it has been used for both senior level undergraduates and beginning graduate classes with students from diverse fields and backgrounds.

A few weeks after the Emancipation Proclamation took effect, James Montgomery sailed into Key West Harbor looking for black men to draft into the Union army. Eager to oblige him, the military commander in town ordered every black man from fifteen to fifty to report to the courthouse, “there to undergo a medical examination, preparatory to embarking for Hilton Head, S.C.” Montgomery swept away 126 men. Storm over Key West is a little-known story woven of many threads, but its main theme is the denial to black people of the equality central to the American ideal. After the island’s slaves flocked to freedom during the summer of 1862, the white majority began a century-long campaign to deny black residents civil rights, education, literacy, respect, and the vote. Key West’s harbor and two major federal forts were often referred to as “America’s Gibraltar.” This Gibraltar guarded the Florida Straits between Key West and Cuba and thus access to the Gulf of Mexico. When Union forces seized it before the war, the southernmost point of the Confederacy slipped out of Confederate hands. This led to a naval blockade based in Key West that devastated commerce in Florida and beyond. This book is the widest-ranging narrative history to date of the military bastion in the Florida Keys.

European settlers in colonial Africa did not have an easy time, depending on what they came with. Theirs was a life of adventure, hardship, homesickness, disease and sometimes, war. The title is Two Suitcases because that is what most Europeans arrived in Africa with, and subsequently left with. From Rhodesias Unilateral Declaration of Independence to the birth of Mugabes Zimbabwe, Two Suitcases - Part Two; The Leap into Uncertainty, Book Two of this compelling trilogy, continues with the tales and experiences of the Krugers and Morgans during Rhodesias UDI years, which were filled with incredible pride, happiness, sadness and tragedy. Maybe too much pride. Sanctions-busting became acknowledged business practice while the vicious Bush War became a way of life affecting everyone, from the soldier in uniform to the farmers wife fighting off a night time homestead attack. Rhodesians were proud to be Rhodesians. For the first time the unglamorous, but vital, part the District Commissioners and their staff played in the Bush War is told. The Two Suitcases trilogy has been inspired by authors such as Wilbur Smith, James Mitchener and Stuart Cloete. Have you read Two Suitcases Part One, Colonialism Crumbles, covering Rhodesias birth from the Boer War to UDI? Watch out for Two Suitcases - Part Three, Descent into Darkness, covering the birth of Zimbabwe under Robert Mugabe to the present day.

This book traces the continued existence of the spiritual alchemy of rebirth in heterodox and specifically Boehmist circles from around 1600 to the early twentieth century. The basic claim of continuity from Boehme to Atwood argued here is not new. A particularly apt expression may be found in F. Sherwood Taylor's The Alchemists of 1949, in which the founding editor of Ambix notes 'the existence of a school of mystical alchemists whose purpose was self-regeneration.' With Boehme as an important early exponent, this 'tendency culminated in 1850' with Atwood's Suggestive Inquiry into the Hermetic Mystery. Taylor's statement, it turns out, could hardly have been more accurate yet has so far lacked the support of a comprehensive presentation. This led Principe and Newman to describe such claims of continuity regarding spiritual alchemy as mere 'conjecture' without 'clear historical evidence.' This book marshals that hitherto elusive evidence, much of it found in obscure manuscript sources, and thus documents the continuity of spiritual alchemy that links the early-modern to the modern era"--

A visceral account of the white-knuckled bombing mission carried out on Hitler’s hometown. In April 1945, Linz was one of Nazi Germany’s most vital assets: a crucial transportation hub and communications centre, its railyards brimming with war materiel destined for the front lines. Linz was also the town Hitler claimed as home. Inevitably, it was one of the most heavily defended targets remaining in Europe. In their unheated, unpressurized B‐24 Liberator and B‐17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, the young men of the US Fifteenth Air Force battled elements as dangerous as anything the Germans could throw at them. When batteries of German anti‐aircraft guns did open fire, the men flew into a man‐made hell of exploding shrapnel. Drawing on interviews with dozens of surviving World War II veterans and residents of Linz, as well as previously unpublished sources, Mike Croissant compellingly relates one of the war’s last truly untold stories – a gripping chronicle of warfare and a timeless tale of courage and terror, loss and redemption. With a foreword by Richard Overy, author of The Bombers and the Bombed
Hitler's first conquests – Austria, the Sudeten region of Czechoslovakia, the demilitarized Rhineland – were bloodless. His first bloody strike east crushed Poland. To the west? On May 10, 1940, the Wehrmacht strikes The Netherlands which Hitler expects will capitulate within a day or two. He is mistaken. Grebbe Line defenders exhibit legendary Dutch stubbornness, Hitler's airborne troops drop onto Rotterdam and The Hague – and meet fierce opposition, and outnumbered and outgunned Dutch troops change – unknowingly at the time – the course of WWII and world history. A stout-hearted queen and a Carmelite priest stand up to Nazism, and resistance fighters' cunning and courage prove lethal for some of history's lesser-known bad guys. Two girls emigrate from Romanian farms to Paris and then Amsterdam and make life-altering choices. A young American employee of a global steamship company finds himself swept into this maelstrom. This history-rich saga provides perspectives little known to Americans.

The East German Ministry of State Security, popularly known as the Stasi, was one of the largest and most intrusive secret police systems in world history. So extensive was the system of surveillance and control that in any given year throughout the 1970s and 1980s, about one in fifty of the 13 million East German adults were working for the Stasi either as an officer or as an informer. Drawing on original sources from the Stasi archives and the recollections of contemporary witnesses, The Stasi: Myth and Reality reveals the intricacies of the relationship between the Stasi enforcers, its agents and its targets/victims, and demonstrates how far the Stasi octopus extended its tentacles into people’s lives and all spheres of society. The origins and developments of this vast system of repression are examined, as well as the motivation of the informers and the ways in which they penetrated the niches of East German society. The final chapters assess the ministry’s failure to help overcome the GDR’s inherent structural defects and demonstrate how the Stasi’s bureaucratic procedures contributed to the implosion of the Communist system at the end of the 1980’s.
Based on interviews and the voluminous materials in the archives of the SED, the Stasi and central and regional authorities, this volume focuses on several contrasting minorities (Jehovah’s Witnesses, Jews, ‘guest’ workers from Vietnam and Mozambique, football fans, punks, and skinheads) and their interaction with state and party bodies during Erich Honecker’s rule over the communist system. It explores how they were able to resist persecution and surveillance by instruments of the state, thus illustrating the limits on the power of the East German dictatorship and shedding light on the notion of authority as social practice.
Written in a folksy, down-to-earth style, this user-friendly guide to the night sky is designed for beginner and intermediate stargazers ages twelve and up. It begins with chapters explaining the stars, nebulae, star clusters, and galaxies—and what readers can expect to see from their own backyards with a modicum of equipment. Virginia StarWatch then examines the major constellations, offering updated tales of the mythology surrounding them and detailing their seasonal movements in the sky. Later chapters delve into the moon, solar and lunar eclipses, planets, and "celestial extras," such as comets, meteor showers, and aurora borealis. The final chapter provides advice on purchasing a telescope and other stargazing equipment. Appendices include monthly star maps for Virginia’s northern latitude, a local resource guide, and a list of Virginia’s brightest stars.
From America's favorite stargazing instructor, a guide to Iowa's night sky, with detailed text, monthly star maps, constellation diagrams, and more than 80 color photographs.
One of the wonders of the universe we live in is the Milky Way. It spans the entire sky and can be seen every night of the year from anywhere on Earth. This is the first book that deals specifically with what can be seen within the Milky Way from a practical observer's point of view. Astronomy of the Milky Way covers every constellation that the Milky Way passes through, and describes in detail the many objects that can be found therein, including stars, double and multiple stars, emission nebulae, planetary nebulae, dark nebulae and supernovae remnants, open and galactic clusters, and galaxies. It also describes the one thing that is often left out of observing guides - the amazing star clouds of the Milky Way itself. It is one of a two-volume set that deal with the entire Milky Way - this second volume looks at what can be seen predominantly from the Southern skies In addition to the descriptive text there are many star charts and maps, as well as the latest up-to-date images made by observatories around the world and in space, as well as images taken by amateur astronomers. Equipped with this book, an amateur astronomer can go out on any clear night of the year and observe the galaxy we live in - The Milky Way.
