The cultivation of the three sisters (corn, beans, and squash) on subsistence farms in El Salvador is a multispecies, world-making, and ongoing process. Milpa describes a small subsistence corn farm. It is derived from the word milli (‘field’, or a piece of land under active cultivation) in Nahuatl. The milpa is a farming practice that uses perennial, intercropping, and swidden (fire and fallow) techniques that predates the Spanish conquest of the Americas. Kneeling Before Corn focuses on the intimate relations that develop between plants and humans in the milpas of the northern rural region of El Salvador. It explores the ways in which more-than-human intimacies travel away from and return to the milpa through human networks. Collective and multivocal, this work reflects independent lines of investigation and multiple conversations between co-authors—all of whom have lived in El Salvador for extended periods of time. Throughout the six chapters, the co-authors invite readers to consider more-than-human intimacies by rethinking, experimenting with, and developing new ways of documenting, analyzing, and knowing the intimacies that form between humans and the plants that they cultivate, conserve, long for, and eat. This book offers an innovative account of rural El Salvador in the twenty-first century.

It is the only book on the topic that covers both the theoretical background and the implementation in language that can be understood by readers without extensive formal training in mathematics, including cognitive scientists, neuroscientists, and psychologists. Readers who go through the book chapter by chapter and implement the examples in Matlab will develop an understanding of why and how analyses are performed, how to interpret results, what the methodological issues are, and how to perform single-subject-level and group-level analyses. Researchers who are familiar with using automated programs to perform advanced analyses will learn what happens when they click the “analyze now” button. The book provides sample data and downloadable Matlab code. Each of the 38 chapters covers one analysis topic, and these topics progress from simple to advanced. Most chapters conclude with exercises that further develop the material covered in the chapter. Many of the methods presented (including convolution, the Fourier transform, and Euler's formula) are fundamental and form the groundwork for other advanced data analysis methods. Our journey together will take us to Spain, Cuba, Mexico and America. Pipo was born in Spain in a small village called Valle De Las Casas in the Castilian Province near Leon, about one hundred and twenty miles North West of the capital city of Madrid. I will cover his life from his birth to his arrival in Cuba, where I was born, and begin to share my first memories of Pipo growing up during the Revolution of Fidel Castro in 1959, as well as during the Missile Crisis of 1962, leading up to our family's departure for Mexico and arrival in Mexico City. I will share the transforming experiences that would shape my future relationship with Pipo. In Mexico City, I convey the turning point that occurred on the concourse of the Mexico City International Airport, an event that I have labeled the “Chiclet's incident”. From this point on, I was on a secret personal mission to help Pipo economically and in every other way I could possibly imagine once we eventually arrived in America. Only a few months after the riots of 1967 literally tore the city apart, we settled in Newark, New Jersey. The riots left behind a flight path of economic turbulence for many decades; nevertheless, Newark became my home. It became dear to me ever since our maiden voyage. My mother Maria urged me to look down from our plane so I could see all the bright lights shining below us. Then she uttered these heartfelt words, “Miguel this is our new home”-- just as we began to rapidly turn and descend in the dark sky for our landing at the old Newark North Terminal Airport. Once we disembarked, Pipo was waiting to accompany us to the reunification celebration.
