IBM® delivered IBM i 6.1 in March 2008. With 6.1, IBM exploits the capabilities of the Machine Interface (MI) architecture to significantly improve programs. Programs can benefit from better performance, a range of new operating system and processor capabilities, and even stronger system integrity. To enable these improvements, all MI programs created for previous releases must be converted to run on 6.1 or a later release. MI programs include integrated language environment (ILE) and original program model (OPM) programs. To convert a program, its creation data, which is a subset of observability, must be available. MI programs retain creation data by default, so that most programs can be converted, going all the way back to programs that were originally created for System/38. Even if an option was chosen to remove creation data from external access, Licensed Internal Code (LIC) can still access the creation data if the target releases of the program and its constituent modules are V5R1 or later. Thus a program lacks sufficient creation data for conversion only if the program or at least one of its modules was created for IBM OS/400® V4R5 or an earlier release and creation data was explicitly removed. You can run the Analyze Object Conversion (ANZOBJCVN) command on V5R4 or V5R3 to help plan for your upgrade. The ANZOBJCVN command identifies programs that will not convert to run on 6.1 or later releases, if any, and estimates the times that are required for the program conversions. It also provides information about two other types of conversions: integrated file system names and spooled files. You can access the ANZOBJCVN command by loading and applying the appropriate PTFs that are listed in this paper. This IBM RedpaperTM publication is intended for system administrators and field technicians to help them understand and prepare for upgrading or migrating to 6.1 or a later release. It explains what the program conversion is and why programs are being created or recreated on 6.1 or a later release. It then provides detailed steps for using the ANZOBJCVN tool on V5R3 or V5R4 to prepare for object conversions. Finally, it discusses the program conversion methods for converting programs to run on 6.1 or a later release. Note: The first edition of this paper was entitled IBM i5/OS Program Conversion: Getting Ready for i5/OS V6R1, REDP-4293-00. The title of this second edition has been slightly modified to IBM i Program Conversion: Getting Ready for 6.1 and Beyond, REDP-4293-01, to reflect the new naming conventions for IBM i.

This book traces the continued existence of the spiritual alchemy of rebirth in heterodox and specifically Boehmist circles from around 1600 to the early twentieth century. The basic claim of continuity from Boehme to Atwood argued here is not new. A particularly apt expression may be found in F. Sherwood Taylor's The Alchemists of 1949, in which the founding editor of Ambix notes 'the existence of a school of mystical alchemists whose purpose was self-regeneration.' With Boehme as an important early exponent, this 'tendency culminated in 1850' with Atwood's Suggestive Inquiry into the Hermetic Mystery. Taylor's statement, it turns out, could hardly have been more accurate yet has so far lacked the support of a comprehensive presentation. This led Principe and Newman to describe such claims of continuity regarding spiritual alchemy as mere 'conjecture' without 'clear historical evidence.' This book marshals that hitherto elusive evidence, much of it found in obscure manuscript sources, and thus documents the continuity of spiritual alchemy that links the early-modern to the modern era"--

José Ferrer (1912–1992) became the first Puerto Rican actor to win the Best Actor Academy Award for the 1950 film version of Cyrano de Bergerac. His iconic portrayal of the lovelorn poet/swordsman had already won him the Tony in 1947, and he would be identified with Cyrano for the rest of his life. Ferrer was a theatrical dynamo with limitless energy; in 1952 he directed Stalag 17, The Fourposter, and The Shrike (which he starred in) on Broadway, while New York City movie marquees were heralding his appearance in Anything Can Happen. At his apex in the 1950s, Ferrer was in constant demand both in theater and movies. He capitalized on his Oscar with such triumphs as Moulin Rouge and The Caine Mutiny. Not content with merely acting, Ferrer soon became a force behind the camera, acting and directing such critically well-received films as The Shrike and The Great Man. Success proved difficult to sustain. In the late 1950s, such ambitious theatrical productions as Edwin Booth and Juno were critical and commercial flops, while film studios also lost their patience with him. By the mid-1960s, Ferrer took whatever roles he could get in films, television, or regional theater. In addition, Ferrer had a turbulent personal life. His first marriage to actress Uta Hagen ended in divorce and scandal. His personal and professional relationship with his Othello costar Paul Robeson landed Ferrer before the House Un-American Activities Committee. Ferrer’s marriage to actress/dancer Phyllis Hill was marred by his infidelity, while his initial wedded bliss with singer Rosemary Clooney eroded as his career began to ebb while hers started to peak. In spite of everything, Ferrer managed to endure and was working practically right up to his death. Ferrer maintained his pride in his Puerto Rican heritage, donating his Oscar to the University of Puerto Rico while championing the work of Latino poets and playwrights. He continuously evolved, striving to remain relevant, stretching his talents (including cabaret, operas, musicals, and yes, ballet!), and writing the occasional guest column for major newspapers. Ferrer’s life is an American success story and a testament to reinvention and resilience.

Alois Riegl's art history has influenced thinkers as diverse as Erwin Panofsky, Georg Lukacs, Walter Benjamin, Paul Feyerabend, Gilles Deleuze, and F'lix Guattari. One of the founders of the modern discipline of art history, Riegl is best known for his theories of representation. Yet his inquiries into the role of temporality in artistic production-including his argument that art conveys a culture's consciousness of time-show him to be a more wide-ranging and influential commentator on historiographical issues than has been previously acknowledged. In Time's Visible Surface, Michael Gubser presents Riegl's work as a sustained examination of the categories of temporality and history in art. Supported by a rich exploration of Riegl's writings, Gubser argues that Riegl viewed artworks as registering historical time visibly in artistic forms. Gubser's discussion of Riegl's academic milieu also challenges the widespread belief that Austrian modernism adopted a self-consciously ahistorical worldview. By analyzing the works of Riegl's professors and colleagues at the University of Vienna, Gubser shows that Riegl's interest in temporality, from his early articles on calendar art through later volumes on the Roman art industry and Dutch portraiture, fit into a broad discourse on time, history, and empiricism that engaged Viennese thinkers such as the philosopher Franz Brentano, the historian Theodor von Sickel, and the art historian Franz Wickhoff. By expanding our understanding of Riegl and his intellectual context, Time's Visible Surface demonstrates that Riegl is a pivotal figure in cultural theory and that fin-de-si'cle Vienna holds continued relevance for today's cultural and philosophical debates.
