Showing why Prince George is a truly special place to call home, visit, or use as a staging point for British Columbia's northern hinterland, this guidebook encourages exploration of the city and the surrounding area, with an accent on self-discovery. The rivers, treed escarpments, abundant green spaces, and surrounding backcountry are waiting to be explored winter and summer. Urban walks and wilderness hikes mix with interesting facts, historic memories and practical information.
Inspired by a fragment of a story written by one budding author, another aspiring author creates the life story of someone named George. From a childhood that originates in an adoption, the story proceeds through his childhood involvement in the sudden loss of his father, the destitution following that loss, a difficult adolescence and then to a curious adult life fated to conclude in a ramshackle shack originally described in the five paragraphs provided by the literary collaborator. The Biography of George is the story of a life inspired by one author and imagined by another.
This volume guides students through Eliot's most widely studied novels: The Mill on the Floss, Silas Marner and Middlemarch. The first part of the book is based on analysis of extracts grouped by themes including relationships, society and morality. At the end of each chapter, a 'Methods' section offers ideas for independent study. The second part describes Eliot's biographical, cultural and intellectual environment, and gives readings of representative critical writing.
This is a personal memoir of my very special friendship with a very unusual man. My wife and I first met George Borcovec during the short-lived Prague Spring of 1968. This chance encounter was the start of a forty year adventure during which we went behind the Iron Curtain, introduced George to life in Britain, watched in fascination the long struggle for freedom of the Czech people, contacted George and his family again after their flight to Austria, taught English in Northern Bohemia, and visited the wonderful city of Prague more than a dozen times. This book tells that story. It covers a dramatic period of change in European history: from hard-line Communism to the challenges of freedom and democracy since 1989. It includes some earlier Czech history, and deals with some of the differences between Czech and British culture. There are family photographs and family letters. There are even some jokes, mainly at the expense of the Czech Communist authorities.
This is the true and dramatic account of one man's quest for justice in helping to overturn the conviction of Barry George, who had been charged with the murder of BBC TV presenter and newsreader Jill Dando. It is a personal story and relates to the family and personal problems involved in fighting such a desperate and unselfish campaign against all odds.
The Cincinnati Reds are recognized as one of the great teams in baseball history. Left fielder George Foster, an integral part of the Reds' back-to-back 1975 and 1976 World Championships, has never received proper credit for his contribution to their legacy. In 1977, Foster became the most feared slugger in the National League, batting .320, with 52 home runs and 149 runs batted in to win the NL MVP Award, establishing a new single-season home run record for the Reds' franchise that still stands. Yet Foster's big year was not enough to stem the emergence of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who roared out of the gate and ran away with the NL West Division pennant. This book tells the story of Foster's record-setting season and puts his pre-steroid era achievements in their proper perspective. The author chronicles the subsequent decline of the Big Red Machine and the rest of Foster's big league career.
The Mountain Knows No Expert epitomizes George Evanoff's philosophy towards the outdoors, while presenting an intriguing contrast with the man himself. Widely regarded as an "expert," he was a knowledgeable, experienced, and practical outdoorsman, teacher, and mentor, yet ironically lost his life in the mountains in an encounter with a grizzly. Son of a Macedonian immigrant family, George was raised in Alberta, and went on to become a mountaineer, guide, avalanche specialist, and pioneer in ecotourism in British Columbia’s North Rockies. The many themes embedded in Evanoff's life experiences encompass self-propelled backcountry travel, outdoor safety, avalanche safety and rescue, ski patrol leader, exploration and discovery, outdoor ethics, and public involvement with respect to land and resource use. George Evanoff was honoured in several tangible ways after his death, culminating in the naming of Evanoff Provincial Park in the Hart Ranges of the Rockies.
About the Book A captivating and moving exploration of two soldiers who put it all on the line to preserve our freedom – from the author of Landing On Your Feet. Today we struggle to navigate an increasingly complex and dangerous world and to understand our place in it. We long for and value the same things – freedom, family, comfort, acceptance, and love. Love of self and love of humanity, despite the flaws. In this insightful and encouraging book, Mike Kerrison explains how two quartermaster soldiers, 1st Army, 4th Infantry, fought side by side during WWII to preserve and protect these cherished values. Corporal George Kerrison and PFC Russ Kearney were only two soldiers amongst millions. Their story is personal. It belongs to them and was protected for nearly 80 years after they landed on Utah Beach on June 6th, 1944. Only by the courage of one man, do we have the story at all, which can now be shared and cherished by each of us. This story joins the multitudes of untold stories that we know are still out there. Kerrison captures the pure essence of these two men, their sacrifices and courage, and their commitment to their country, their families, and to each other. With sensitivity and unflinching honesty that has won him legions of readers, Mike Kerrison explains the importance of keeping these stories alive before it’s too late. George and Russ at age twenty, entered one of the most deadly and terrifying wars our world has ever known. What they did for us is beyond our grasp of understanding and needs to be remembered, honored, and celebrated. As forthright as it is honest, as dreadful as it is joyful, George and Russ reveal our crying out for a better world while remembering those who fought to preserve it. About the Author Mike Kerrison is an entrepreneur, author, speaker, and business consultant. His popular first book, Landing On Your Feet, was published in 2003 and his highly sought after third book, Breakaway Sales, will be published in the winter of 2023. After graduating from Ohio University, he started his career as a salesman with IBM. After that he started, built, and eventually sold three highly successful technology companies. He is also an expert in American History with his primary focus being the European Battles of WWII. He is a passionate American Patriot and has great respect and admiration for the US Military. His father, George Kerrison and his uncle, Russ Kearney are his two heroes and the focus of this book. He wrote their amazing story of their D-Day landing at Normandy, their terrifying battles across western Europe, their enduring friendship, and to honor their courage to preserve our liberty. He had two additional motivations for writing this story. First, was to fulfill a promise to the many members of his large, extended family. And second, to fulfill a promise to all Americans to preserve these stories of heroism and liberty before they are forgotten forever. He wanted the world to know what the “everyday soldier” was willing to sacrifice to protect and preserve our country and our world. Mike is happily married to his wife Andrea and has four children and nine grandchildren. He makes his home in Minnesota.

A chronicle of Her Majesty's Australian Ship (HMAS) Sydney's hunt for the German raider, Emden, as told from an Australian's point of view In the opening months of World War I, Emden's trail of destruction was tremendous. This one small ship and her skilled and gallant captain wrought havoc on the maritime trade of the British Empire, capturing and sinking ships at will. Australia, sending wool, wheat, and gold across the Indian Ocean to sustain the Mother Country, and despatching tens of thousands of young men to join the fight, had a vital interest in bringing Emden to her end. The battle, when it came, was short and bloody, an emphatic first victory at sea for the newborn Royal Australian Navy. It remains to this day a celebrated epic of naval warfare. In the century since, many writers have been there before Mike Carlton. Most were German, some of them survivors of the battle, others later historians, and they have generally told the story well. British accounts vary in quality, from good to nonsense, and there have been some patchwork American attempts as well. Curiously, there has been very little written from an Australian point of view. This book is--in part--an attempt to remedy that, with new facts and perspectives brought into the light of day."--Publisher description.
