As noted in the preface to that volume, it had neither plot or identifiable structure, its intended purpose being to present a series of entertainments on a wide range of ridiculous activities that constitute everyday life. Whether it was faithful to that lofty purpose remains a mystery, even to the author that made that bold declaration. Four years later, a second volume of the Smart Aleck Chronicles appears, its intent no less high minded than the standards of lunacy reached by its predecessor, its implementation no less laughable. This time, as in the previous volume, there are pithy and pointless observations that may have appeared in previous publications for which the author may have had responsibility, fictitious biographies of friends and colleagues, several short works of fiction and top ten lists of observations that may be symptomatic of clinical insanity. Further, just to ensure that the reader is not entirely dismayed, there are also several courageous attempts at poetry.

You may come to the same conclusion another reader came to when I was in the early process of simply sending my stories out to gauge the interest of a potential book. She said, "You have led a charmed life." My first reaction was, "Are you nuts?" The fact is, although I grew up differently than almost all of you, I haven't had a charmed life, believe me. That sounds like in some way I have been "lucky" that I haven't experienced hardships, pain, or defeat. Nothing could be further from the truth. But I will tell you what is true, I have had a blessed life. Through it all, the Lord has kept me above my trials and tribulations, even when I didn't believe He was there. Through disappointment, death, disease, He was there. I truly believe that we all have choices to make in life. You can allow disappointments and discouragement in life to make you bitter, or you can use them to make you better. That's why I titled this book Sunny Side Up. It's how you view your circumstances and how you use them that make us who we are. To me, it's always been that simple, and before you ask, no, I am not a Southern version of Tony Robbins. I am just telling you the way I see it. So with that being said, I hope you will find some of these short stories humorous. I hope a few of them will give you pause to appreciate your blessings and one or two that will tug at your heartstrings to encourage you to be a better friend and neighbor. I know that some of these stories, if not all, will seem far-fetched or unbelievable to many of you, but like I said, I grew up differently than most of you, and my experiences in this life, to say it bluntly, are unbelievable in themselves. But this book really isn't about me at all; I am just a storyteller. I love telling stories about characters with character, and there are plenty of both in the stories before you. And before I forget, on behalf of my German shepherd Sadie and my black Lab Doc and myself, thank you for buying this book. We greatly appreciate it.

Since the shocking news first broke in 1876 of the Seventh Cavalry’s disastrous defeat at the Little Big Horn, fascination with the battle—and with Lieutenant George Armstrong Custer—has never ceased. Widespread interest in the subject has spawned a vast outpouring of literature, which only increases with time. This two-volume bibliography of Custer literature is the first to be published in some twenty-five years and the most complete ever assembled. Drawing on years of research, Michael O’Keefe has compiled entries for roughly 3,000 books and 7,000 articles and pamphlets. Covering both nonfiction and fiction (but not juvenile literature), the bibliography focuses on events beginning with Custer’s tenure at West Point during the 1850s and ending with the massacre at Wounded Knee in 1890. Included within this span are Custer’s experiences in the Civil War and in Texas, the 1873 Yellowstone and 1874 Black Hills expeditions, the Great Sioux War of 1876–77, and the Seventh Cavalry’s pursuit of the Nez Perces in 1877. The literature on Custer, the Battle of the Little Big Horn, and the Seventh Cavalry touches the entire American saga of exploration, conflict, and settlement in the West, including virtually all Plains Indian tribes, the frontier army, railroading, mining, and trading. Phil is still struggling to find a new purpose in life following the closure of the pit and fears being thrown on the scrapheap. He is not the man he was and this is affecting his family. His wife, Deb, is frustrated and is pursuing her own dream of owning and running a café, with or without his support. His unemployed son, Gav, has shown little interest in joining a father-son plumbing business, preferring instead to earn 'easy' (probably illegal) money with his mates doing 'a bit of this and a bit of that'. Phil clings to the past, as a member of a mining community, by retreating to his garage to work on his classic BSA Golden Flash motorbike - a restoration project he started just weeks before the miners' strike began. The bike is the last remaining symbol of the hope, pride and dignity he had as a young miner. Now, in the final week of his training course, he has a violent encounter with an old enemy from his days on the picket line. This leads Phil to acknowledge that his inability to move on from his past life has made him self-centred and endangered his own and his family's safety.

Drawing on six years of ethnographic research, this book critically examines police culture, exploring police behaviours, decisionmaking and actions. Police culture is a concept widely used, often critically, to characterise the working attitudes and behaviours of (usually uniformed) police officers. It is shorthand for a workplace imbued with machismo, racism, sexism, a thirst for danger and excitement, cynicism and conservatism. Rather than looking for culture or identifying how culture affects behaviours, this book identifies factors that influence the decisions and actions, including technology, targets, training, timing, intelligence, geography and supervision, thus reassembling police culture much as Bruno Latour sought to reassemble the social. The analysis develops a clearer and critical understanding of culture by explicitly connecting the debates about police culture to those about organisational culture. Offering a detailed ethnography of two shifts, it grounds the analysis of the idea of police culture in a 'thick description' of the day- to- day activities observed in the police station and the patrol car, rather than using brief illustrative extracts. The book dispenses with any assumption of the utility of the concept of police culture, not least because it is opaque, and reassembles our understanding of policing and, if it retains any relevance, of police culture. An accessible and compelling read, this book will appeal to students and scholars of policing, criminology, sociology, law, politics and all those interested in the day- to- day lives of police officers.
