Hacia 1278 el fraile franciscano Juan Gil de Zamora escribía la obra De preconiis Hispanie, que dedicaba al hijo de Alfonso X, el príncipe Sancho, más tarde rey Sancho IV. Se puede decir que la finalidad de la obra era la instrucción del príncipe, para lo cual trata una serie de temas que considera formativos y constituyen el contenido de la obra: los primeros pobladores de España, la fertilidad de sus tierras, las cualidades que deben tener los príncipes (largueza, fortaleza, fidelidad, paciencia, perseverancia), todo ello acompañado de exempla de hombres famosos de la Antigüedad, las figuras históricas, tanto políticas (emperadores hispanos) como literarias (poetas e historiadores) y religiosas (santos), la historia más reciente de España y una visión de la historia universal, resaltando siempre los aspectos moralizantes. Pese a su relación con la corte de Alfonso X, impulsor del uso del romance en obras históricas, Juan Gil utilizó el latín para su obra. Para paliar el escaso conocimiento de la lengua latina que había entre muchos miembros de la nobleza se hacían traducciones como la que presentamos aquí. El manuscrito de esta traducción, con el título de Alabanças de España, perteneció al marqués de Santillana, como indican algunas notas marginales, y es de suponer que era una ayuda para leer el De preconiis Hispanie de Juan Gil. Ha permanecido inédita hasta el presente, por lo que consideramos que su publicación es una excelente contribución para los estudiosos en general y especialmente para la historia de la lengua española.

What role does war play in political development? Our understanding of the rise of the nation-state is based heavily on the Western European experience of war. Using innovative new data such as tax receipts, naming of streets and public monuments, and conscription records, the author carefully examines how war affected the fiscal development of the state, the creation of national identity, and claims to citizenship. Rather than building nation-states and fostering democratic citizenship, he shows, war in Latin America destroyed institutions, confirmed internal divisions, and killed many without purpose or glory.

Peru's indigenous peoples played a key role in the tortured tale of Shining Path guerrillas from the 1960s through the first decade of the twenty-first century. The villagers of Chuschi and Huaychao, high in the mountains of the department of Ayacucho, have an iconic place in this violent history. Emphasizing the years leading up to the peak period of violence from 1980 to 2000, when 69,000 people lost their lives, Miguel La Serna asks why some Andean peasants chose to embrace Shining Path ideology and others did not. Drawing on archival materials and ethnographic field work, La Serna argues that historically rooted and locally specific power relations, social conflicts, and cultural understandings shaped the responses of indigenous peasants to the insurgency. In Chuschi, the guerrillas found indigenous support for the movement and dreamed of sparking a worldwide Maoist revolution. In Huaychao, by contrast, villagers rose up against Shining Path forces, precipitating more violence and feeding an international uproar that took on political significance for Peru during the Cold War. La violencia en su forma de secuestro ha afectando a toda la sociedad. Como en todo grupo social allí se entrecruzan seres humanos con sus culturas, sus religiones y sus pasiones. Cada personaje tiene características propias basadas en experiencias personales del autor o referenciales de pacientes o amigos, en todos ellos hay características universales en las cuales el lector podrá reconocerse. El área geográfica donde se desarrolla corresponde al oriente venezolano en el Golfo de Paria, la salida del delta del Orinoco y la cercanía de Trinidad. Esta vecindad con Trinidad ha determinado una sociedad con con cierta influencia anglosajona. Las situaciones sociales son todas ficticias pero posibles en la realidad venezolana de la transición del siglo XX al siglo XXI. Las consideraciones filosóficas y religiosas son puramente de la creatividad del autor. El amor como el motor de las relaciones humanas con sus facetas pasionales, sensoriales, afectivas, emosionales e incluso platónicas se aprecia a lo largo de toda la ficción de esta novela.

Since the publication of the still very valuable Biblioteca histórica de la filología by Cipriano Muñoz y Manzano, conde de la Viñaza (Madrid, 1893), our knowledge of the history of the study of the Spanish language has grown considerably, and most manuscript and secondary sources had never been tapped before Hans-Josef Niederehe of the University of Trier courageously undertook the task to bring together any available bibliographical information together with much more recent research findings, scattered in libraries, journals and other places. The resulting Bibliografía cronológica de la lingüística, la gramática y la lexicografía del español: Desde los principios hasta el año 1600 (BICRES) began appearing in 1994. BICRES I covered the period from the early beginnings to 1600), followed by BICRES II (1601–1700), BICRES III (1701–1800), and together with Miguel Ángel Esparza Torres of Madrid there followed BICRES IV (1801 to 1860). Now, the fifth volume, has become available, covering the years from 1861 to 1899. Access to the bibliographical information of altogether 5,272 titles is facilitated by several detailed indexes, such as a short title index, a listing of printers, publishers and places of production, and an author index. More than twenty years of research in the major libraries of Spain and other European countries have gone into this unique work — relative sources of the Americas have also been covered — making it exhaustive source for any serious scholar of any possible aspect of the Spanish language.
