Despite the U.S. and China’s shared economic and political interests, distrust between the nations persists. How does the United States rhetorically navigate its relationship with China in the midst of continued distrust? This book pursues this question by rhetorically analyzing U.S. news and political discourse concerning the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the 2010 U.S. midterm elections, the 2012 U.S. presidential election, and the 2014-2015 Chinese cyber espionage controversy. It finds that memory frames of China as the yellow peril and the red menace have combined to construct China as a threatening red peril. Red peril characterizations revive and revise yellow peril tropes of China as a moral, political, economic and military threat by imbuing them with anti-communist ideology. Tracing the origins, functions, and implications of the red peril, this study illustrates how historical representations of the Chinese threat continue to limit understanding of U.S.-Sino relations by keeping the nations’ relationship mired in the past.

We struggle to stay on diets, to get enough exercise and to manage our money. We misjudge risky situations. We are prone to herding: sometimes peer pressure leads us blindly to copy others around us; other times copying others helps us to learn quickly about new, unfamiliar situations. This Very Short Introduction explores the reasons why we make irrational decisions; how we decide quickly; why we make mistakes in risky situations; our tendency to procrastination; and how we are affected by social influences, personality, mood and emotions. The area was originally known as "Faughts," for James Jasper Faught, who had operated a trading post at the old "Crossroads" site in 1879. It linked the burgeoning settlement of Nixa to other communities in the area. Nicholas Alexander Inman came from Tennessee in 1852 and opened a blacksmith shop with Joe Weaver. Inman's family farm consisted of 160 acres, which are part of the present day boundaries of Nixa. Nixa was officially incorporated as a village on June 10, 1902.

On August 7, 1998, at approximately 10:30 a.m. local time, the first truck bomb exploded outside the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya. Minutes later, a second truck bomb exploded outside the U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. I was assigned to the embassy in Nairobi as the Financial Management Center (FMC) Director. I was off-site that morning. Had I been present, there is a high probability I would not be writing this book. Though I did not ask for any of this, I found myself to be a tiny hub on a "Deep State" wheel, with the spokes— the U.S. Department of State, Central Intelligence Agency, Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Military— all connecting to me. For what reason— because of the money. Through years of just doing my job as a federal auditor and then as a Foreign Service Financial Management Specialist, I became aware of and took actions regarding money, unbeknownst to me at the time, having linkages to covert operations. My story has serious political overtones, but it is not a political story. It is my story. It is the story of what can happen when you innocently seek one truth, but discover quite another.
