Attending to the mid-Victorian boys’ adventure novel and its connections with missionary culture, Michelle Elleray investigates how empire was conveyed to Victorian children in popular forms, with a focus on the South Pacific as a key location of adventure tales and missionary efforts. The volume draws on an evangelical narrative about the formation of coral islands to demonstrate that missionary investments in the socially marginal (the young, the working class, the racial other) generated new forms of agency that are legible in the mid-Victorian boys’ adventure novel, even as that agency was subordinated to Christian values identified with the British middle class. Situating novels by Frederick Marryat, R. M. Ballantyne and W. H. G. Kingston in the periodical culture of the missionary enterprise, this volume newly historicizes British children’s textual interactions with the South Pacific and its peoples. Although the mid-Victorian authors examined here portray British presence in imperial spaces as a moral imperative, our understanding of the "adventurer" is transformed from the plucky explorer to the cynical mercenary through Robert Louis Stevenson, who provides a late-nineteenth-century critique of the imperial and missionary assumptions that subtended the mid-Victorian boys’ adventure novel of his youth.
Having so many theories put together thoughtfully, proximally, in a single book will help the field come to grips with what the role is of theories as we go forward and address the individual actions, and societal and community influencers of individual action, that promote healthy behaviors." --Jim Marks, director, National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention New and longstanding threats to public health, such as violence, drug misuse, HIV/AIDS, and homelessness are creating an ever greater demand for innovative theories that are responsive to the changes in the larger social environment. This important work is designed to fill the demand by assembling a careful selection of new and emerging health promotion theories into a single volume, written with an emphasis on practical application of theory to health promotion and health education programs.

Festivals and events are of enormous significance to many communities around the world. They can have historic, religious, cultural and traditional significance, and they are also important parts of community building. This book focuses on these small-scale, non-metropolitan events (i.e. rural, regional and peri-urban) to explore the complex relationships between place, community and identity and the ways in which festival events bring these into being. By drawing on the notion of ‘encounter’, this book examines how festivals and events can be seen primarily as spaces where different people meet. This notion of encounter helps us to understand how conviviality and social relations are developed, and what this then means in terms of social cohesion and social justice. It also draws on current theoretical and methodological approaches that can tell us about the role of festivals in contemporary life, and it includes the sensual approach, the geographies of affect and emotion, the notion of the right to the city and nonrepresentation theory. The book brings together these perspectives and examines their relevance in the community events context, identifying and discussing theoretical frameworks drawn from (including but not limited to) human geography, sociology, anthropology, leisure studies and urban planning, as well as tourism and event studies. For these reasons, Festival Encounters will be a valuable read for students and academics working on a wide range of disciplines.

Beginning in the late 1950s and continuing through the 1970s, the United States experienced a vast expansion in national policy making. During this period, the federal government extended its scope into policy arenas previously left to civil society or state and local governments. With The Great Broadening, Bryan D. Jones, Sean M. Theriault, and Michelle Whyman examine in detail the causes, internal dynamics, and consequences of this extended burst of activity. They argue that the broadening of government responsibilities into new policy areas such as health care, civil rights, and gender issues and the increasing depth of existing government programs explain many of the changes in America politics since the 1970s. Increasing government attention to particular issues was motivated by activist groups. In turn, the beneficiaries of the government policies that resulted became supporters of the government’s activity, leading to the broad acceptance of its role. This broadening and deepening of government, however, produced a reaction as groups critical of its activities organized to resist and roll back its growth.

The organisation of mental health services has an important bearing on the effectiveness of service delivery and on the achievement of objectives of national mental health policies. This publication does not aim to prescribe a single model for service organisation, as this depends on the social, cultural, political and economic context within individual countries; rather it seeks to highlight examples of good practice in successful service delivery models in order to provide guidance to countries in different regions of the world on the key issues involved. This publication is also available as part of a set of eight mental health policy and service publications containing practical guidance to assist policy-makers and planners in WHO member countries (ISBN 0119894173).
Transfer pricing (the pricing of cross-border intra-firm transactions between related parties) is now the top international tax issue faced by multinational enterprises. In an international taxation environment characterized by rigorous enforcement of transfer pricing documentation, disclosure, and audit processes, a need has arisen for multinationals to be cognizant of the impact of their ‘tax risk appetite’ on their relationship with taxation authorities and to be aware of how best to manage their transfer pricing arrangements. The most promising development has been the growing commitment to Advance Pricing Agreements (APAs) – arrangements made prospectively between a multinational taxpayer and one or more revenue authorities, agreeing on an appropriate set of criteria for the determination of the transfer pricing of the covered transactions over a period of time. This is the first book to offer expert insights on APAs from a practical perspective. By focusing on the United States and Australia, the two countries that were at the forefront of adopting APAs and whose wealth of experience over two decades confirms their APA programs as the global paradigms, the author is able to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of pursuing an APA and to shed light on the powerful efficacy of this strategy for avoiding transfer pricing disputes. In addition, the author enlists the views of revenue authorities, transfer pricing practitioners, and corporate counsel who deal with the realities of transfer pricing assessment and compliance on an ongoing basis, offering acute insight into how APAs really work in a practical way. This book contributes to the body of knowledge on APAs in the context of transfer pricing by providing in-depth scrutiny of the most important issues surrounding this critical area, and by examining innovations in APAs in the United States and in Australia. Its unmatched coverage will be welcomed by tax experts at law firms and multinational companies as well as by revenue officials, policymakers, and scholars and researchers in international taxation.

Foreword by Graeme Murphy. It is impossible to tell the story of dance in Australia without focusing on Dame Margaret Scott. The fiftieth anniversary of The Australian Ballet School is a fitting time to launch her biography - she was the first Director of the School and a dancer and teacher of immense vision and intellect. Maggie Scott was born into a free-spirited family whose pioneering attitudes she shares. She has made an incomparable contribution to dance in Australia since arriving in 1947 on tour with the English company, Ballet Rambert. She was a foundation member of the National Theatre Ballet and led a group of Australians who helped establish the Australian Ballet as the country’s flagship ballet company. The inspirational Maggie Scott trained dancers now recognised internationally as exceptional performers, choreographers, directors and teachers. She memorably returned to the stage in Graeme Murphy's Nutcracker, most recently in 2000. Michelle Potter is a dance writer, historian and curator with a doctorate in Art History and Dance History from the Australian National University. She is the recipient of two Australian Dance Awards: Services to Dance in 2003 and Outstanding Achievement in Dance on Film in 2001. Graeme Murphy AO, a student of Dame Margaret Scott, has been at the forefront of Australian and international dance as a choreographer and director for nearly four decades. ‘A fascinating multi-faceted read, not least for its great insight into Australia during the 1940s.’ Launceston Examiner ‘A valuable addition to our dance history.’ Dance Australia ‘Impeccably researched...a fascinating biography of a major luminary.’ Sydney Arts Guide
A New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice A spirited new history of Chinese food told through an account of the remarkable life of Fu Pei-mei, the woman who brought Chinese cooking to the world. In 1949, a young Chinese housewife arrived in Taiwan and transformed herself from a novice to a natural in the kitchen. She launched a career as a cookbook author and television cooking instructor that would last four decades. Years later, in America, flipping through her mother’s copies of Fu Pei-mei’s Chinese cookbooks, historian Michelle T. King discovered more than the recipes to meals of her childhood. She found, in Fu’s story and in her food, a vivid portal to another time, when a generation of middle-class, female home cooks navigated the tremendous postwar transformations taking place across the world. In Chop Fry Watch Learn, King weaves together stories from her own family and contemporary oral history to present a remarkable argument for how understanding the story of Fu’s life enables us to see Chinese food as both an inheritance of tradition and a truly modern creation, influenced by the historical phenomena of the postwar era. These include a dramatic increase in the number of women working outside the home, a new proliferation of mass media, the arrival of innovative kitchen tools, and the shifting diplomatic fortunes of China and Taiwan. King reveals how and why, for audiences in Taiwan and around the world, Fu became the ultimate culinary touchstone: the figure against whom all other cooking authorities were measured. And Fu’s legacy continues. Her cookbooks have become beloved emblems of cultural memory, passed from parent to child, wherever diasporic Chinese have landed. Informed by the voices of fans across generations, King illuminates the story of Chinese food from the inside: at home, around the family dinner table. The result is a revelatory work, a rich banquet of past and present tastes that will resonate deeply for all of us looking for our histories in the kitchen.
The ultimate reference book : the 5th updated edition of the famous “blue guide”. Incluided : A DVD with new sequences completes each chapter! Epileptology changes. The syndromic approach is completed by an etiological approach, based on the major advances in genetics and functional genetics. New entities have found their place, and a purely descriptive, “electroclinical” approach is no longer adapted in many circumstances. The 5th edition of the Blue Guide includes the most recent advances. It was necessary to justify the physiological, epidemiologic, genetic and therapeutic approaches and to consider them in the light of the new classification efforts, which are still in the making. Nevertheless, the description of epileptic syndromes, both classical and recent, remains at the core of this book.

From jitterbugging and Big Brother to the introduction of television and the rise of file-sharing, this study explores the ways in which popular culture has developed and changed in Australia from the end of World War II to today. In order to understand the massive social and cultural changes that have taken place Down Under, popular culture is examined through three main lenses: consumerism and the development of a mass consumer society, the impact of technological change, and the ways in which popular culture contributes to and articulates individual and collective identities. Providing the first integrated account of Australian post-war culture, this reference analyzes film, television, sports, music, and leisure in relation to each other rather than as stand-alone cultural forms.
