When out-of-wedlock pregnancies, paternity suits, and infidelity resulted in legal cases, courtrooms became battlegrounds for warring clans. Families flooded the courts with testimony, sometimes resorting to slander and jury-tampering to defend their kin. Even slaves merited defense as household members—and as valuable property. Servants, on the other hand, could expect to be cast out and left to fend for themselves. As she elaborates the ways family policing undermined the administration of justice, M. Michelle Jarrett Morris shows how ordinary colonists understood sexual, marital, and familial relationships. Long-buried tales are resurrected here, such as that of Thomas Wilkinson’s (unsuccessful) attempt to exchange cheese for sex with Mary Toothaker, and the discovery of a headless baby along the shore of Boston’s Mill Pond. The Puritans that we meet in Morris’s account are not the cardboard caricatures of myth, but are rendered with both skill and sensitivity. Their stories of love, sex, and betrayal allow us to understand anew the depth and complexity of family life in early New England.

This volume aims to address both deficits. Beginning from a reconstruction of Fichte's theory of rational agency, this volume examines his arguments for the thesis that rational agency must have two constitutive ends: substantive and formal independence. It argues for a novel interpretation of Fichte's conception of substantive independence, and shows how Fichte's account of moral duties is derived from the end of substantive independence on that conception. It also argues for a new interpretation of Fichte's conception of formal independence, and explains why the usual understanding of this end as providing direct guidance for action must be mistaken. It encompasses a systematic reconstruction of Fichte's first-order claims in normative ethics and the philosophy of right.

Suzie finds herself alone on Christmas eve and her thoughts wonder to the love of her life. She was still waiting for him to keep his promises. She decides to start writing a book about their love. She would make him bigger than life and no one would know what details were real. It would begin in the 60's, just prior to the sexual revolution. The book continues until she finishes their story. She does not know how to end it because, in actuality their story hasn't ended. She sends the book to a publisher and luckily is published. In the time they are not together, they have difficult lives and obstacles to overcome. She ends up in a bad marriage and he ends up on the front lines of Vietnam. They both have baggage placed on them by their fathers. She feels she must remain a virgin until she is married, and his dad told him not to buy a pair of shoes without trying them on because of his genital endowment. The book is well written and easy to love. It has a fantastic ending. It spans a lifetime in the two main characters, beginning at the young age of 19. There is also an encounter with a gypsy who said they could only be happy, in the sunshine, by the sea.

What is art? The arts establishment has a simple answer: anything is art if a reputed artist or expert says it is.
