Borden's career declined after she severed her ties with Fox, and by the early 1930s she was finished in Hollywood. Alcoholism and a devastating series of personal setbacks hastened her death at age forty-one. Olive Borden's controversial contract debacle with Fox and her long-term relationship with actor George O'Brien are thoroughly detailed. What happens when South Africa's tumultuous political life becomes entangled in the courts of law? Certainly, the legal system was used by both the apartheid state and its opponents. But it is in the post-apartheid era, and in particular under the rule of President Jacob Zuma, that we have witnessed a dramatic increase in 'lawfare': the migration of politics to the courts. The authors show through a series of case studies how just about every aspect of political life ends up in court: the arms deal, the demise of the Scorpions, the Cabinet reshuffle, the expulsion of the EFF from Parliament, the nuclear procurement process, the Cape Town mayor – the list goes on and on. This book examines the long-term development of the Irish welfare state since the late nineteenth century. It contests the consensus view that Ireland, like other Anglophone countries, has historically operated a liberal welfare regime which forces households to rely mainly on the market to maintain their standard of living. Drawing on case studies and key statistical data, this book argues that the Irish welfare state developed differently from most other Western European countries until recent decades. Norris's original line of argument makes the case that Ireland’s regime was distinctive in terms of both focus and purpose in that Ireland’s welfare state was shaped by the power of small farmers and moral teaching and intended to support a rural, agrarian and familist social order rather than an urban working class and industrialised economy. A well-researched and methodical study, this book will be of great interest to scholars of social policy, sociology and Irish history.
An innovative book about the relationship between South Africa and India South Africa's future is increasingly tied up with that of India. While trade and investment between the two countries is intensifying, they share long-standing historical ties and have much in common: apart from cricket, colonialism and Gandhi, both countries are important players in the global South. As India emerges as a major economic power, the need to understand these links becomes ever more pressing. Can the two countries enter balanced forms of exchange? What forms of transnational political community between these two regions have yet to be researched and understood? The first section of South Africa and India traces the range of historical connection between the two countries. The second section explores unconventional comparisons that offer rich ground on which to build original areas of study. This innovative book looks to a post-American world in which the global South will become ever more important. Within this context, the Indian Ocean arena itself and South Africa and India in particular move to the fore. The book's main contribution lies in the approaches and methods offered by its wide range of contributors for thinking about this set of circumstances.
Background: Considering the pivotal role of negative emotional experiences in the development and persistence of mental disorders, effectively interfering with the consolidation/reconsolidation of such experiences would open the door to a novel treatment approach in psychiatry. Objective: We assessed the current evidence regarding the capacity of the β-blocker propranolol to block the consolidation/reconsolidation of emotional memories by means of a meta-analytic review. Data sources: An extensive multilingual literature search from 1994 to 2011 yielded 189 potential articles. Study selection: Selected studies consisted of randomized, double-blind experiments assessing long-term memory for emotional material in adults and involving at least one propranolol and one placebo condition. Of 189 potential studies, 13 consolidation ( n = 310) and 9 reconsolidation ( n = 327) experiments with adults met inclusion criteria for statistical analysis. Data extraction: Two independent reviewers extracted outcome and descriptive data from each study. Effect sizes were calculated using a random effects model. Data synthesis: Compared to placebo, propranolol given before memory consolidation reduced subsequent recall for negatively valenced stories, pictures, word lists, and the expression of cue-elicited fear responses: Hedge’s g = 0.47, 95% CI = 0.22–0.72. Moreover, compared to placebo, propranolol before memory reconsolidation reduced subsequent recall for negatively valenced emotional words, as well as the expression of cue-elicited fear responses, g = 0.59, 95% CI = 0.16–1.01. Splitting the results according to episodic retention and physiological responding did not yield a significant difference in effect size for consolidation or reconsolidation blockade. Removing the clinical studies from the larger group of nonclinical studies did not impact the statistical significance of the results either. Conclusions: Propranolol shows promise in reducing subsequent memory for new or recalled emotional material in healthy subjects. Studies of clinical populations, however, have yet to independently demonstrate that such findings can translate into powerful clinical effects.
This book explores Conditional Cash Transfers programs within the context of education policy over the past several decades. Conditional Cash Transfer programs (CCTs) provide cash to poor families upon the fulfillment of conditions related to the education and health of their children. Even though CCTs aim to improve educational attainment, it is not clear whether Departments or Ministries of Education have internalized CCTs into their own sets of policies and whether that has had an impact on the quality of education being offered to low income students. Equally intriguing is the question of how conditional cash transfer programs have been politically sustained in so many countries, some of them having existed for over ten years. In order to explore that, this book will build upon a comparative study of three programs across the Americas: Opportunity NYC, Subsidios Condicionados a la Asistencia Escolar (Bogota, Colombia), and Bolsa Famila (Brazil). The book presents a detailed and non-official account on the NYC and Bogota programs and will analyze CCTs from both a political and education policy perspective.
