Less well known is what has become of the movements for human rights once democratic governments were restored in these countries. In this book, Michelle Bonner reveals how the defense of human rights continues today, taking Argentina as her primary example (with comparison to Chile in the final chapter). Bonner shows that the role of women&—viewed as protectors of the family&—is key to understanding how human rights movements have evolved. Moreover, the continuity of the &“historical frames&” used to legitimate their activity is an essential element in the success of their efforts, even while the claimed abuse has changed from the political repression undertaken by the dictators&’ minions to the economic hardships created by market inequities resulting from neoliberal policies. Although sexual violence directed at both females and males is a reality in many on-going conflicts throughout the world today, accountability for the perpetrators of such violence remains the exception rather than the rule. While awareness of the problem is growing, more effective approaches are urgently needed for the investigation and prosecution of conflict-related sexual violence crimes. Upon its establishment in 1993, the Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) began the challenging task of prosecuting the perpetrators of conflict-related sexual violence crimes, alongside the many other atrocities committed during the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia. This book documents the experiences, achievements, challenges, and fundamental insights of the OTP in prosecuting conflict-related sexual violence crimes at the ICTY over the past two decades. It draws on an extensive dossier of OTP documentation, court filings, trial exhibits, testimony, ICTY judgements, and other materials, as well as interviews with current and former OTP staff members. The authors provide a unique analytical perspective on the obstacles faced in prioritizing, investigating, and prosecuting conflict-related sexual violence crimes. While ICTY has made great strides in developing international criminal law in this area, this volume exposes the pressing need for determined and increasingly sophisticated strategies in order to overcome the ongoing obstacles in prosecuting conflict-related sexual violence crimes. The book presents concrete recommendations to inform future work being done at the national and international levels, including that of the International Criminal Court, international investigation commissions, and countries developing transitional justice processes. It provides an essential resource for investigators and criminal lawyers, human rights fact-finders, policy makers, rule of law experts, and academics.

Ever since the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, there has been a renewed interest in the area of Islamic fundamentalism. Consequently, the interest in Christian fundamentalism has shifted into the background, as it had been a chief concern of a number of authors since the 1970s. In 1993, the World Alliance of Reformed Churches (WARC), the Lutheran World Federation (LWF), and the Pontiþcal Council for Promoting Christian Unity (PCPCU) conducted a multilateral dialogue addressing the worldwide phenomena of Christian fundamentalism, and they eventually published a report on their þndings entitled Christian Fundamentalism Today: The Papers and Findings of the WARC, LWF, PCPU Consultation, 22-26 February 1993 (ed. H.S. Wilson, Geneva: World Alliance of Reformed Churches, 1994). While such writings serve to inform the reader on the issue of Christian fundamentalism, they offer no practical steps on how ecumenically minded Christians can more effectively address the spiritual and theological concerns of those who are seeking refuge from the fundamentalist worldivew, especially within the context of the United States. This work will focus on the problem of how ecumenically minded Christians could more effectively address the spiritual and theological concerns of former fundamentalists in the United States, espeically when dealing with the difþcult theological topics of biblical inerrancy and eschatology. Since evangelicals closely resemble fundamentalists in doctrine and practice, the author will approach this task by conducting a textual analysis of the documents that came out of some of the ofþcial bilateral dialogues between evangelical and non-evangelical groups in hopes that the results of these documents will offer some clues as to how to improve relations between former fundamentalists and ecumenically minded Christians, espeically when it comes to dealing with the aforementioned theological issues.

Contemporary accounts of urban Native identity in two pan-Indian communities In the last half century, changing racial and cultural dynamics in the United States have caused an explosion in the number of people claiming to be American Indian, from just over half a million in 1960 to over three million in 2013. Additionally, seven out of ten American Indians live in or near cities, rather than in tribal communities, and that number is growing. In Indigenous Memory, Urban Reality, Michelle Jacobs examines the new reality of the American Indian urban experience. Drawing on ethnographic research conducted over two and a half years, Jacobs focuses on how some individuals are invested in reclaiming Indigenous identities whereas others are more invested in relocating their sense of self to the urban environment. These groups not only apply different meanings to indigeneity, but they also develop different strategies for asserting and maintaining Native identities in an urban space inundated with false memories and fake icons of “Indian-ness.” Jacobs shows that “Indianness” is a highly contested phenomenon among these two groups: some are accused of being "wannabes" who merely "play Indian," while others are accused of being exclusionary and "policing the boundaries of Indianness." Taken together, the interconnected stories of relocators and reclaimers expose the struggles of Indigenous and Indigenous-identified participants in urban pan-Indian communities. Indigenous Memory, Urban Reality offers a complicated portrait of who can rightfully claim and enact American Indian identities and what that tells us about how race is “made” today.
