He and John Boy are, in more than some ways, alike, but attack life's opportunities in different ways. Before John Boy attains a seat in Boston's city council, attempts are made on his life. John Boy is the fourth book in a series of short stories that begins after World War II. The first story, Club Morocco, involves a gambling shack and a dishonest self-serving police chief. Their lives are interwoven initially in book two, Promises, in Boston, and even deeper in book three, Passion and Power, which eventually relocates from Boston to Palermo, Sicily. This book, titled John Boy, begins in a Palermo hospital. It continues into Rome, Siena, Florence, and San Gimignano. John Boy falls in love with a beautiful airline executive, Claudia, while he and Roberto discover, to a considerable extent, especially for Roberto, the interwovenness of their lives and a deeper recognition and value of family. The history of the Mafia is apparent throughout book four. All are woven together with flashbacks to earlier Mafia murder plots, politics in Boston and Italy, and some interesting historical stories about a few Italian cities with a little about tasty food. All is woven into a thrilling series of crime, family, love, and life. Lastly, with the help of a mutual priest friend, John Boy and Roberto grow to understand what is expected of them, as will you.

At the same time that the Civil Rights Movement brought increasing opportunities for blacks, the United States liberalized its immigration policy. While the broadening of the United States's borders to non-European immigrants fits with a black political agenda of social justice, recent waves of immigration have presented a dilemma for blacks, prompting ambivalent or even negative attitudes toward migrants. What has an expanded immigration regime meant for how blacks express national attachment? In this book, Niambi Michele Carter argues that immigration, both historically and in the contemporary moment, has served as a reminder of the limited inclusion of African Americans in the body politic. As Carter contends, blacks use the issue of immigration as a way to understand the nature and meaning of their American citizenship-specifically the way that white supremacy structures and constrains not just their place in the American political landscape, but their political opinions as well. White supremacy gaslights black people, and others, into critiquing themselves and each other instead of white supremacy itself. But what may appear to be a conflict between blacks and other minorities is about self-preservation. Carter draws on original interview material and empirical data on African American political opinion to offer the first theory of black public opinion toward immigration.

Covering the late colonial age to World War I and beyond, this collection of essays places the economic history of the American South in an international light by establishing useful comparisons with the larger Atlantic and world economy. In an attempt to dispel long-lasting myths about the South, the essays analyze the economic evolution of the South since the slave era. From this perspective, the conception of a backward, wholly agricultural antebellum South occupied only by wealthy planters, poor whites, and contented slaves has finally given way to one of economic and social dynamism as well as regional prosperity. In a coherent and cohesive progression of subjects, these essays show that the South had been deeply enmeshed in the Atlantic economy since the colonial period and, after the Civil War, retained distinctive needs that caused increasing departure from the course northerners adopted on matters of political economy. This comparative approach also helps explain the motivations behind the political choices made by the South as an eminently export-oriented region. This book shows that the South was not slower to develop with respect to industrialization than either the majority of the northern states, especially in the West, or the countries of Western Europe. In fact, the apparently disappointing performance of the New South's economy appears to be the result of more pervasive and largely uncontrollable trends that affected the national as well as the international economy. Global Perspectives on Industrial Transformation in the American South makes an important contribution to the economic history of the South and to recent efforts to place American history in a more international context.
