Before the First World War, Essex was a very different county from that which we know today. The economy was largely based on agriculture, and the people rarely travelled beyond its borders, or even out of their towns or villages. The war opened up a whole new world for the people of Essex. Men from the county enlisted in Kitchener's Army and travelled abroad, and many troops came into the camps and barracks which sprang up. Some of these were men from across the empire who came to fight for the mother country. Essex was a key area during the war: situated on the east coast, it was thought that the enemy could potentially use it as a site for invasion, so many defences were set up all round the county. Essex was subjected to great danger and harsh times by the enemy in the form of air raids from Zeppelins, and later, from aeroplanes. This book sets out the experiences of the county against what was happening in the broader theatre of war.

This book traces a number of common themes relating to the representation of Irish Travellers in Irish popular tradition and how these themes have impacted on Ireland’s collective imagination. A particular focus of the book is on the exploration of the Traveller as “Other”, an "Other" who is perceived as both inside and outside Ireland’s collective ideation. Frequently constructed as a group whose cultural tenets are in a dichotomous opposition to that of the “settled” community, this book demonstrates the ambivalence and complexity of the Irish Traveller “Other” in the context of a European postcolonial country. Not only has the construction and representation of Travellers always been less stable and “fixed” than previously supposed, these images have been acted upon and changed by both the Traveller and non-Traveller communities as the situation has demanded. Drawing primarily on little-explored Irish language sources, this volume demonstrates the fluidity of what is often assumed as reified or “fixed”. As evidenced in Irish-language cultural sources the image of the Traveller is inextricably linked with the very concept of Irish identity itself. They are simultaneously the same and “Other” and frequently function as exemplars of the hegemony of native Irish culture as set against colonial traditions. This book is an important addition to the Irish Studies canon, in particular as relating to those exciting and unexplored terrains hitherto deemed “marginal” - Traveller Studies, Romani Studies and Diaspora/Migration Studies to name but a few.

This classic text, first published in 1964, opens with an account of the victory of Count Plunkett, father of the executed 1916 leader, Joseph Plunkett, in the February 1917 bye-election in North Roscommon. This was the first opportunity the Irish people had to show their support for the ideals of the 1916 leaders electorally. The book concludes with an account of the asassination of Seargent King of the "Castlerea Murder Gang" of the Black and Tans on the morning of the truce in July 1921. In between it details raids, ambushes, reprisals and escapes at Rockingham, Ballymote, Knockcroghery, Ballaghadrreen, Teevnacreeva, Ballinlough, Frenchpark, Fouremilehouse, Carrick-on-Shannon, Elphin, Keadue, Scramogue, Loughglynn, Athlone and Boyle. It tells the story of key figures in the area such as Fr. Michael O'Flanagan, Paddy Moran, Fr. Malachy Brennan, Joe Tormey and the many brigades and companies of the North and South Roscommon Volunteer battalions and the neighbouring counties with which they worked.
