For ten days, a number of neuroscientists met at Reisensburg to attend a series of lectures and discussions, an Institute, on animal learning. The students were drawn from a wide variety of disciplines, including anatomy, biochemistry, pharmacology, physiol ogy and zoology. It is probably true to say that many of them had at best a sketchy knowledge about the learning behavior of animals, about the conditions which are necessary for learning to take place and about the theories that psychologists have constructed about the learning processes. Was the Institute of any benefit to those neuro scientists whose interests lay in studying the functioning of the nervous system by manipulating it or probing it in some direct way? Some twenty years ago the answer to this question would probably have been "No"; and there is a very good reason why this view might have been held, especially by students of the mammalian nervous system. At that time most investigators used anaesthetised animals, or animals immobilized in some other way such as by surgically isolating the brain from the spinal cord, by dividing the brain at various levels or through the use of paralyzing agents. These con ditions achieved two things. On the one hand, they allowed sub stantial advances to be made, particularly in the analysis of sensory processing and in the analysis of the neuronal mechanisms of relatively simple reflex action. On the other hand, the experi mental conditions virtually eliminated complex behavior.

It is a commonplace that emotions can give us information about the world: we are told, for instance, that sometimes it is a good idea to 'listen to our heart' when trying to figure out what to believe. In particular, many people think that emotions can give us information about value: fear can inform us about danger, guilt about moral wrongs, pride about achievement. But how are we to understand the positive contribution that emotions can make to our beliefs in general, and to our beliefs about value in particular? And what are the conditions in which emotions make such a contribution? Emotional Insight aims to answer these questions. In doing so it illuminates a central tenet of common-sense thinking, contributes to an on-going debate in the philosophy of emotion, and illustrates something important about the nature of emotion itself. For a central claim of the book is that we should reject the idea that emotional experiences give us information in the same way that perceptual experiences do. The book rejects, in other words, the Perceptual Model of emotion. Instead, the epistemological story that the book tells will be grounded in a novel and distinctive account of what emotions are and what emotions do. On this account, emotions help to serve our epistemic needs by capturing our attention, and by facilitating a reassessment or reappraisal of the evaluative information that emotions themselves provide. As a result, emotions can promote understanding of and insight into ourselves and our evaluative landscape.

Written in the author's maternal Greek, the Roman History of the third-century A.D. historian Cassius Dio is our fullest surviving historical source for the reign of the Emperor Augustus. In The Augustan Succession Peter Michael Swan provides an ample historical and historiographic commentary on Books 55-56 of the History. These books recount Augustus's last twenty-three years (9 B.C.-A.D. 14), during which the aging monarch, amid dynastic tragedies and military setbacks, orchestrated the continuation of the constitutional and imperial system developed under his leadership, which ended in his transmission of power to his son-in-law Tiberius. The Augustan Succession is the first commentary since the eighteenth century to offer full and fresh treatment of this segment of Dio's work. This commentary pays close critical attention to Dio's historical sources, methods, and assumptions as it also strives to present him as a figure in his own right. During a long life (ca. 164-after 229), Dio served as a Roman senator under seven emperors from Commodus to Severus Alexander, governed three Roman provinces, and was twice consul. An acute and interested contemporary observer of wide experience, positioned close to the seat of imperial power, he was a self-assured personality who embodied deeply conservative political and social views and prejudices. All these factors inform the pages of Dio's Augustan narrative, as does, above all, his doctrine that the best remedy for the troubles of his own age of "rust and iron" was rule on the model of Augustus. This is an historical commentary on Books 55-56 of Dio's Roman History. These books recount the last half of the reign of the Emperor Augustus, above all his orchestration of the first imperial succession. Addressed to both students and scholars, the new commentary is the first since the eighteenth century to offer full and fresh treatment of this segment of Dio's work.

Mike Viola’s work has universal appeal, having as its subject the daily events and situations that touch the lives of people everywhere. During his long career with The Philadelphia Inquirer, he met and conquered the challenge of every assignment. In this publications, twelve categories and approximately 350 photographs are presented to give the reader insight into the scope of Mike’s work. Even in what sometimes seemed like an “ordinary” assignment became the extraordinary front page photograph in the hands (and heart) of this master photographer. The photographs in this volume were taken by staff photographer Mike Viola for The Philadelphia Inquirer from 1964 to 1988. As they sipped their morning coffee, readers were accustomed to seeing the familiar byline under a photograph that, indeed needed no byline. Whatever the subject, there was no mistaken his inimitable style. Aside from their newsworthy content, Mike’s black and white prints are perfect studies in form, contrast, mood and balance. When he was just 13 and living in rural Brazos County, Texas, Mike received a small Kodak camera. He looked through its viewfinder and clicked the shutter, but had no idea the role it would play in his life. Four years later the Navy offered him an opportunity to serve as a photographer’s striker aboard the USS Miami and the click of that small Kodak camera resounded again and again throughout a career dedicated to excellence. Mike Viola served in the Navy from 1944 to 1947. He photographed activity in the Pacific and participated in Operation Crossroads aboard the carrier USS Saidor as photographic specialist in connection with the Bikini Atomic Bomb tests in July 1946. In 1964, Mike won the Look Magazine Sports Photo Award and throughout his twenty-five years as a staff photographer with The Philadelphia Inquirer, has won numerous awards given by the Press Photographers Association of Philadelphia, The Pennsylvania Press Photographers Association, the Pennsylvania Newspaper Publishers Association, the Associated Press Managing Editors of Pennsylvania, the New Jersey Press Association, the National Headliners Awards and the Society of Professional Journalist, Sigma Delta Chi. Mike was also a member of The Inquirer staff team awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1980, for their report on the Three Mile Island accident. Mike Viola is retired and lives in Philadelphia with his wife Kitty of 62 years, and their two Pomeranians, Coco and Bindi.

It is remarkable that various distinct physical phenomena, such as wave propagation, heat diffusion, electron movement in quantum mechanics, oscillations of fluid in a container, can be described using the same differential operator, the Laplacian. Spectral data (i.e., eigenvalues and eigenfunctions) of the Laplacian depend in a subtle way on the geometry of the underlying object, e.g., a Euclidean domain or a Riemannian manifold, on which the operator is defined. This dependence, or, rather, the interplay between the geometry and the spectrum, is the main subject of spectral geometry. Its roots can be traced to Ernst Chladni's experiments with vibrating plates, Lord Rayleigh's theory of sound, and Mark Kac's celebrated question “Can one hear the shape of a drum?” In the second half of the twentieth century spectral geometry emerged as a separate branch of geometric analysis. Nowadays it is a rapidly developing area of mathematics, with close connections to other fields, such as differential geometry, mathematical physics, partial differential equations, number theory, dynamical systems, and numerical analysis. This book can be used for a graduate or an advanced undergraduate course on spectral geometry, starting from the basics but at the same time covering some of the exciting recent developments which can be explained without too many prerequisites.
