That older patients can be successfully treated has only recently been recognized by professionals and by older persons themselves. That older persons can also be taught new skills or retaught previously existing skills constitutes even newer knowledge. By focusing on the reversibility 0/ behavioral defidts in the elderly the authors, under the leadership of Dr. Roger Patterson, have made both a scientific and a humanitarian contribution to the well-being of older persons. In this volume they have presented a theoretical basis and a practical how-to method of overcoming behavioral deficits. They have demonstrated that their modular technique of fostering improved functioning in such areas as activities of daily living and sodal skills not only has been successful but also has allowed individuals to return to less restrictive environments or to completely independent living. The approach is an interdisciplinary one, appropriately since older people often experience diffirulties in multiple areas of function ing. The authors have tried to integrate social, medical, and behav ioral approaches, with an emphasis on behavioral methodologies. Although this book deals primarily with behavioral approaches to treatment of the elderly in a single setting, the volume c1early con stitutes achallenge to other scientists and clinicians to apply the techniques described here in other settings. A medical colleague of mine, a geriatrician, recently expressed the opinion that he had never encountered an older patient for whom he could not do something to improve health.

Are the Commandments really written in stone? A biblical scholar offers an “engrossing and enlightening guide to one of the world’s great legal codes” (Booklist). In this lively, provocative book, Michael Coogan takes us into the ancient past to examine the Ten Commandments, also known as the Decalogue. How, among all the laws reportedly given on Mount Sinai, did the Ten Commandments become the Ten Commandments? When did that happen? There are several versions of the Decalogue in the Old Testament, so how have different groups determined which is the most authoritative? Why were different versions created? Coogan discusses the meanings the Ten Commandments had for audiences in biblical times and observes that the form of the ten proscriptions and prohibitions was not fixed—as one would expect since they were purported to have come directly from God—nor were the Commandments always strictly observed. In later times as well, Jews and especially Christians ignored and even rejected some of the prohibitions, although the New Testament clearly acknowledges the special status of the Ten Commandments. Today it is plain that some of the values enshrined in the Decalogue are no longer defensible, such as the ownership of slaves and the labeling of women as men’s property. Yet in line with biblical precedents, the author concludes that while a literal observance of the Ten Commandments is misguided, some of their underlying ideals remain valid in a modern context.

Theorists are increasingly arguing that it is fruitful to approach anxiety from the cognitive perspective, and the empirical evidence supports that contention. The cognitive perspective is also adopted in this book, but the approach represents a development and extension of earlier ones. For example, most previous theories and research have been based on anxiety either in clinical or in normal groups. In contrast, one of the central themes of this book is that there are great advantages to be gained from a joint consideration of clinical and normal anxiety. Another theme of this book is that it is of major importance to establish whether or not there is a cognitive vulnerability factor which is associated with at least some forms of clinical anxiety. It is argued (with supporting evidence) that there is a latent cognitive vulnerability factor for generalized anxiety disorder which manifests itself under stressful conditions. This vulnerability factor is characterized by hypervigilance, and is found predominantly in normals high in the personality dimension of trait anxiety. The scope of the book extends to the effects of anxiety on performance and to the phenomenon of worry, which is regarded as the cognitive component of anxiety. In both cases, a new theoretical framework is presented. After discussion of a number of famous classical experiments, the advances brought about by the introduction of new techniques, in particular NMR spectroscopy, are exemplified in numerous cases taken from the recent literature. Experimental verification of many of the predictions made in Woodward and Hoffmann's explication of the Conservation of Orbital Symmetry are described. Applications that involve the breaking of molecular symmetry to resolve these and other mechanistic problems in organic, inorganic and organometallic chemistry are presented in the first sections of the book, together with many examples of the detection of hitherto hidden rearrangement processes.Subsequently, under the aegis of making molecular symmetry, examples of the preparation of highly symmetrical molecules found in the organic, organometallic or inorganic domains are discussed. These include Platonic hydrocarbons or boranes, tetrahedranes, cubanes, prismanes, dodecahedrane, fullerene fragments such as corannulene, sumanene or semibuckminsterfullerene, and other systems of unusual geometries or bonding characteristics (Möbius strips, molecular brakes and gears, Chauvin's carbomers, Fitjer's rotanes, persubstituted rings, metal-metal multiple bonds, etc.). The text also contains vignettes of many of the scientists who made these major advances, as well as short sections that briefly summarise key features of important topics that underpin the more descriptive material. These include some aspects of chirality, NMR spectroscopy, and the use of isotopic substitution to break molecular symmetry. A brief appendix on point group symmetry and nomenclature is also helpfully provided.
