Michael Bowman's book forms a useful reference source for Health Service staff interested in the role of the professional nurse and the dis charge of professional accountability. I am delighted that this work competently deals with nursing's dilemmas about its therapeutic role over a crucial period in its history, especially the effects of major structural change on the profession between the period from the implementation of the Salmon and Mayston Reports up to the present time and Project 2000. The picture is in Dr Bowman's opinion not a very happy one from the viewpoint of the profession. Some of the changes that have taken place have involved some loss of professional cohesion and were independent of the organizational framework of the National Health Service. Nevertheless, it is disturbing that nurses appear during the period covered to have Ilad a quite inadequate input to the shaping of Health Policy. There are already signs that the nursing profession has begun to absorb the warnings ci ted in Dr Bowman's study. However, in the wake ofthe National Health Service reforms and the implementing of a business culture in the National Health Service, nurses may find the message of this book only too familiar. That does not for one moment mean that the nursing input to corporate strategy and general direction should be defensive or reactionary. British nursing continues to be highly regarded by the general public.

Two works in one, this volume contains the full text of With Her in Ourland by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, as well as an illuminating sociological analysis by Mary Jo Deegan with the assistance of Michael R. Hill. Ourland is the sequel to Gilman's acclaimed feminist utopian novel Herland; both were published in her journal, The Forerunner, in 1915 and 1916. Ourland resumes the adventures of ^IHerland^R's protagonists, Ellador and Van, but turns from utopian fantasy to a challenging analysis of contemporary social fissures in his land, or the real world. The republication of Herland as a separate novel in 1979 revived critical interest in Gilman's work but truncated the larger aims implicit in the ^IHerland/Ourland^R saga, leaving an erroneous understanding of Gilman's other/better half of the story, in which it is suggested that strong women can resocialize men to be nurturant and cooperative. Gilman's choice of a sexually integrated society in With Her in Ourland provides us with her answer to her ideal society, but her foray into a woman-only society as a corrective to a male dominated one is a controversial option. The challenging message of Ourland, however, does not impede the pleasure of reading it as a novel. Though known more for her fiction today, Gilman in her time was a recognized and accomplished sociologist who admired Lester F. Ward and frequently visited Jane Addams of Chicago's Hull-House. The male protagonist in Herland/Ourland, Van, is a sociologist, used by Gilman as a foil on which to skewer the assumptions and practices of patriarchal sociology. The interpretation presented here, which adopts a sociological viewpoint, is invaluable reading for scholars and students of sociology, American women's studies, and utopian literature.

Augustus Short arrived in Adelaide in late 1847 as the first Anglican Bishop of Adelaide; he was forty-five years old, married to Millicent, and they had five children. He was to remain in office for thirty-four years and departed for retirement to England in his eightieth year, much lauded as a distinguished colonist. This volume (a companion to Augustus Short and the Founding of the University of Adelaide, published in 2014) explores Short’s life before arriving in South Australia — his education at Westminster School and at Christ Church, Oxford. An outstanding scholar, Short was ordained a priest of the Church of England in 1827, and taught at Christ Church before serving eleven years in a rural parish in Northamptonshire. Many of the courageous and innovative ideas Short practised as Bishop of Adelaide had their origins in his education, and were influenced by those he studied with — Bishop Thomas Vowler Short, Bishop Charles Lloyd, Edward Bouverie Pusey and John Henry Newman, among others. Short’s first forty-five years were dominated by Christ Church, and this is equally a story of that enduring community of learning and worship as it shaped Short’s beliefs and choices in life.

Every taxon with an eponymous vernacular or scientific name (whether in current usage or not) is listed, followed by a concise biography of the person concerned. These entries vary in length from a few lines to several paragraphs, depending on the availability of information or the importance of the individual's legacy. The text is punctuated with intriguing or little-known facts, unearthed in the course of the authors' extensive research. Ornithologists will find this an invaluable reference, especially to sort out birds named after people with identical surnames or in situations where only a person's forenames are used. But all birders will find much of interest in this fascinating dictionary, an ebook to dip into time and time again whenever their curiosity is aroused.

Ten Studies Into Psychopathic Personality concerns ten studies made on psychopathic disorders in Britain from 1958 to 1963. These studies cover 100 subjects who were admitted at the Balderton Hospital in 1958. These studies cover subjects such as diagnostic analysis, E.E.G. technique, parental separation and severity disorder, conscience, and prognosis of psychopaths. Six studies describe work on patient admissions for treatment of psychopathic disorders, while four reports investigate hypotheses through comparison of those admissions to groups of normal, delinquent, and psychopathic individuals. These reports show a continuum in personality disorder from normality, to minor behavioral disorders to extreme psychosis. Some general conclusions note that no evidence exists between direct genetic endowment from parent to psychopathic traits of children, as well as more studies need to clinically define psychopathic behavior from lesser personality disorders. Other conclusions show very little knowledge at hand for effectively treating psychopathic behavior; other results point to differential improvement to different treatments. These studies will interest, psychiatrists, psychologists, behavioral scientists, researchers and academicians dealing with deviant human behavior.

In 1834 the weary missionary Jason Lee arrived on the banks of the Willamette River and began to build a mission to convert the local Kalapuya and Chinook populations to the Methodist Church. The denomination had become a religious juggernaut in the United States, dominating the religious scene throughout the mid-Atlantic and East Coast. But despite its power and prestige and legions of clergy and congregants, Methodism fell short of its goals of religious supremacy in the northwest corner of the continent. In A Country Strange and Far Michael C. McKenzie considers how and why the Methodist Church failed in the Pacific Northwest and how place can affect religious transplantation and growth. Methodists failed to convert local Native people in large numbers, and immigrants who moved into the rural areas and cities of the Northwest wanted little to do with Methodism. McKenzie analyzes these failures, arguing the region itself--both the natural geography of the place and the immigrants' and clergy's responses to it--was a primary reason for the church's inability to develop a strong following there. The Methodists' efforts in the Pacific Northwest provide an ideal case study for McKenzie's timely region-based look at religion.
