Already as a young boy, I used to walk with my late father, an ardent naturalist at heart, though to his regret not by profession, in the fields and woods on Mt. Carmel where we lived. My father, being largely an amateur ornithologist but also loving other vertebrates, was less inter ested in the little creatures(-the invertebrates) so abundant under stones. These were, more often then not, isopods which are particularly abundant in the Mediterranean region of northern Israel, and therefore not difficult to encounter (Fig. 1). Thus, my interest in the terrestrial isopods started at an early stage. Many years later, after graduating from the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, I worked as an assistant to my late friend and colleague, Professor Michael Costa, at the Teachers Seminary in Oranim. One day I found on my desk a copy of Edney's (1954) paper: Woodlice and the land habitat, which my friend left for me knowing of my interest in this group. Therefore, due to the stimulus of Edney's paper, and the many interesting questions it raised in my mind, I developed a lifelong interest in this amazing crustacean group. My research in the ecophysiology of this group followed to a large extent the directions formulated by Edney and Cloudsley-Thompson whose name will be mentioned throughout this book. I am also indebted to the many stimulating discussions with my friends and colleagues C. S. Crawford, K. E. Linsenmair, and E.

It is now up to civilisation to challenge climate change. It can achieve this by command and control as well as flexible mechanisms at home and abroad, before the process of global warming becomes totally irreversible.

Best makes the case that government should create the institutional infrastructures needed to support these elements and their interconnections rather than subsidise individual enterprises.

This is the story of Karoly, a man whose family protected Katia and other Jewish refugees who were trying to escape the advance of Nazi Germany, from the west, and the advancing Russian's 'Red Army' and their Romanian allies, to the east; Karoly was a teenage boy who was used as human-shield by Romanian 'liberators' in Hungary. After the war, he was sent to prison while Hungary was under communist control. He was committed as a political prisoner for being a member of the Independent Small-holders Party, the communist party's only serious political rival. Under the communist regime, anyone who held authority in the community was a threat and Karoly was arrested under a trumped up charge. He was sent to Marianosztra where he was given the option of starvation or working as a miner in a forced labour camp. Karoly worked in a coalmine until he escaped the cruel communist regime in 1956. This is the story of a man who cheated death and suffered un-imaginable privations before escaping to England.

He esaped in 1956 and rebuilt his life in England. This is his story.He was born in January 1928, forty kilometres east of Budapest. His village was ninety-eight per cent Catholic, a rural, agrarian based Catholic community, which was very strict. At five, he was an altar boy on Sundays. On 1st September, 1939, he enrolled in the Grammar school at Nagykata where he would spend four years. Then his world was turned upside down.
