Toussaint L'Ouverture is not a familiar enough name to the majority of Black people of America, but it should be, because he was the man responsible for the second free nation in our hemisphere - Haiti, the first Black republic in the world. Toussaint L'Ouverture is an inspiration to Black people throughout the world, for here is a man who was born a slave, lived the greater part of his life as a slave, and never gave up the hope and goal of freedom for his people. In ancient Rome, there was a man who had the same idea. He also was a slave; his name was Spartacus. He led a slave revolt against the power of Rome which was the most formidable power in the world at that time. But he did not succeed, and he was finally put to death by the Romans. Where Spartacus failed in his attempt to win freedom for the slaves, the "Black Spartacus," Toussaint L'Ouverture, not only succeeded, but did so against even greater odds. He fought and won against three powers - the French, the Spanish, and the British. He succeeded because he was not only a fearless military leader, but also a brilliant politician, well-skilled in the art of negotiation. Toussaint L'Ouverture turned a group of disorganized slaves into a well-trained fighting army, and they were willing to follow him anywhere. He accomplished this not only through a powerful personality, but with his forceful leadership. He lived with his men, and when they charged, he was right up front, leading them. He shared all the dangers and toils they encountered. His army consisted not only of the men under his military command, but the masses of Black people throughout the Island of Haiti as well, who trusted Toussaint L'Ouverture as a man devoted to their interests, who would lead them to victory in their struggle against the abomination of slavery. This Black Spartacus succeeded because he had more "inner weapons" at his disposal than the Spartacus of ancient Rome. Toussaint L'Ouverture's mere presence had an electrifying effect on people - both Black and white. He had a inner fire that seemed to draw them to him. He was educated, and this allowed him to negotiate on an equal level with the leaders he faught against. Often, he left them filled with admiration for his wisdom and use of political intrigue. A religious man, he did not murder wantonly, but only killed his enemy when forced to do so. If there was a chance to win a battle without killing, Toussaint used all is skill toward this end. He did not believe in pillage and destruction for their own sake, and in several instances won over the enemy without firing a shot. Toussaint L'Ouverture was a man of his people, a Black man devoted freedom, equality, and liberty for his Black brothers. He, more than any man in history, was responsible for freeing slaves, restoring their dignity as human beings, and allowing them to be masters of their own fate. Years before Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, the Black slaves of Haiti were free, and in control of their own Republic, because of the leadership of one man - Toussaint L'Ouverture.

Thinking Freedom in Africa conceives an emancipatory politics beginning from the axiom that ‘people think’. Previous ways of conceiving the universal emancipation of humanity have in practice ended in failure. Marxism, anti-colonial nationalism and neo-liberalism all understand the achievement of universal emancipation through a form of state politics. Marxism, which had encapsulated the idea of freedom for most of the twentieth century, was found wanting when it came to thinking emancipation because social interests and identities were understood as simply reflected in political subjectivity which could only lead to statist authoritarianism. Neo-liberalism and anti-colonial nationalism have also both assumed that freedom is realizable through the state, and have been equally authoritarian in their relations to those they have excluded on the African continent and elsewhere.Thinking Freedom in Africa then conceives emancipatory politics beginning from the axiom that ‘people think’. In other words, the idea that anyone is capable of engaging in a collective thought-practice which exceeds social place, interests and identities and which thus begins to think a politics of universal humanity. Using the work of thinkers such as Alain Badiou, Jacques Rancière, Sylvain Lazarus, Frantz Fanon and many others, along with the inventive thought of people themselves in their experiences of struggle, the author proceeds to analyse how Africans themselves – with agency of their own – have thought emancipation during various historical political sequences and to show how emancipation may be thought today in a manner appropriate to twenty-first century conditions and concerns.

In American political fantasy, the Founding Fathers loom large, at once historical and mythical figures. In The Traumatic Colonel, Michael J. Drexler and Ed White examine the Founders as imaginative fictions, characters in the specifically literary sense, whose significance emerged from narrative elements clustered around them. From the revolutionary era through the 1790s, the Founders took shape as a significant cultural system for thinking about politics, race, and sexuality. Yet after 1800, amid the pressures of the Louisiana Purchase and the Haitian Revolution, this system could no longer accommodate the deep anxieties about the United States as a slave nation. Drexler and White assert that the most emblematic of the political tensions of the time is the figure of Aaron Burr, whose rise and fall were detailed in the literature of his time: his electoral tie with Thomas Jefferson in 1800, the accusations of seduction, the notorious duel with Alexander Hamilton, his machinations as the schemer of a breakaway empire, and his spectacular treason trial. The authors venture a psychoanalytically-informed exploration of post-revolutionary America to suggest that the figure of "Burr" was fundamentally a displaced fantasy for addressing the Haitian Revolution. One of the first books to apply contemporary linguistic and semiotic research to drama, Discourse as Performance is an investigation into theatrical discourse - the specifically theatrical use of language in the broadest sense, from verbal utterance to non verbal uses comprising the visual elements of gesture, facial expression, movement, costume, players' bodies, properties, and decor. The book is in three parts. In the first part, the author deals with theatrical discourse proper and distinguishes between its two main modes: dialogue and stage directions. Both modes address the problem of the specificity of theatrical discourse in contrast to other types of discourse, both literary and non-literary. The dialogue raises the questions of who speaks in a play (author, characters, actors) and to whom; the stage directions raise the question of reading a play, as opposed to seeing it performed onstage. Black Cat Weekly 16 is a special holiday issue, featuring three holiday-themed mysteries for your reading pleasure. We didn’t have any holiday science fiction or fantasy stories on tap this time, but we will definitely try to do better next year. Mythology--circulated in sacred stories (myths) and their reenactments (rituals)--is the basis of any society's religion, and religion is an essential key to identity. Mythology's meaning depends on the elaboration of identity in cultural metaphors that are at the same time ecological (arising from a society's environmental exploitation), sociological (based on indigenous social relations) and ideological (couched in terms of a society's worldview).
