Richly illustrated, this monograph offers the first thorough look at the career of Michael Taylor whose sculpture not only involves the elements of visual perception of light, lines, color and shapes, but the intangible element of human emotion. 160 colour illustrations
The world is in turmoil. Reeling after a devastating alien invasion that decimates the world's population, humanity survives in small communities, fighting for their lives. Countless millions died during the initial invasion, and those still alive are seen as nothing more than a food source for the hungry Quar. Governments quickly fall across the globe, and a primitive, brutal, survival mentality now consumes the world. But amid the chaos, one small pocket of technology held out longer than the rest. Within a secret lab, Earth's salvation rested on the small shoulders of a group of genetically modified children known only as the Theta DNA kids. No longer fully human, they carry the genetic traits of humanity within and they now face the very destiny they had been engineered for. They were humanity's last, best hope for a future any future. Once out of the lab, the Theta DNA kids be-gin a dangerous, nomadic adventure. Along the way, they encounter other small groups of other Thetan DNA mutants and struggle to form alliances. Can these young heroes put their own adolescent insecurities aside long enough to truly work together for the common good? To do so, they must learn to work together, to lead and to fight for the very future of humanity. Their enemies are close, but even the teens don't fully understand how close. Through the horrors of invasion, grief, loss, and brutal truth, these young soldiers fight for every-thing, with everything they've been genetically enhanced to give.
A powerful and provocative critique of the foundations of Rational Choice theory and the economic way of thinking about the world, written by a former leading practitioner. The target is a dehumanizing ideology that cannot properly recognize that normal people have attachments and commitments to other people and to practices, projects, principles, and places, which provide them with desire-independent reasons for action, and that they are reflective creatures who think about what they are and what they should be, with ideals that can shape and structure the way they see their choices. The author's views are brought to bear on the economic way of thinking about the natural environment and on how and when the norm of fair reciprocity motivates us to do our part in cooperative endeavors. Throughout, the argument is adorned by thought-provoking examples that keep what is at stake clearly before the reader's mind.

In 2020, we learned something valuable: The fist of nature can hit us anywhere and anytime- the great plague of London in 1665, the great plague of Marseille in 1720, the Russian plague in 1770, the Philadelphia yellow fever of 1793, the flu pandemic of 1889, the American polio of 1916, the Spanish flu of 1918, the Asian flu of 1957, the AIDS pandemic of 1981, the H1N1 swine flu of 2009, the West African Ebola epidemic of 2014, and the COVID-19 of 2020. Those pandemics created fears in people's hearts, which, if left unchecked, could spread like a virus.Today, people are afraid of not knowing when the next killer virus will emerge. They are afraid of realizing that viruses have no morality, no sense of good and evil, and no distinction between the deserving and the undeserving, the old and the young. In fact, a virus can change the fate of the world. And if we learned anything from the latest crisis in 2020 is that humanity is not strong enough to deal with every obstacle nature puts before it. In fact, we are living in an era of stronger killer viruses and weaker immune systems. In such an era, fear becomes an insidious virus, which creates a breeding place in our minds. This book will help readers understand the dark and treacherous path that need to follow when journeying life with fear. It will open their hearts to the most ancient secrets about fear, which will hopefully guide their way to the realm of fearlessness! To write this book, I traveled many countries around the world and interviewed a number of renowned scientists, philosophers, motivational speakers, gurus, sages and monks, in universities, places of worship, temples, shrines, and ashrams, to discover and unearth the hidden, unknown and unfathomable riddles of fear.I also read, adopted and practiced the most ancient knowledge and sagacity to offer readers, through this book, which is part fiction part real, part biography part storytelling, the opportunity to live their lives free from the shadows of fear.
Faith is one of the most critical aspects of the Christian life, because it is the means by which we receive all that God has secured for us; yet the nature of faith is one of the most misunderstood concepts of Christianity. Some conceptualize faith as some mental state that one must reach before they are able to “tap into” God’s “resources.” Others view faith as some sort of incorporeal substance that is “out there” for which we must reach. All of these concepts of faith are deficient, if not heretical, and yet all of them are found in the church. Others view faith as a mere fantasy or hope with no basis in reality, and thus religious claims are excluded from the arena of knowledge. “For a number of years my heart has been trilled over the doctrine of faith as it is received and taught among evangelical Christians everywhere. Great emphasis is laid upon faith in orthodox circles, and that is good, but still I am troubled. Specifically, my fear is that the modern conception of faith is not the biblical one; that when the teachers of our day use the word, they do no mean what Bible meant when they used it”. I also share the same concerns with A.W.Tozer, when he said; “the cause of my uneasiness are these”: 1. The lack of spiritual fruits in the lives of so many who claim to have faith. 2. The rarity of a radical change in the conduct and general outlook of persons professing their new faith in Christ as their personal Savior. 3. The failure of our teachers to define or even describe the thing to which the word faith is supposed to refer. 4. The heartbreaking failure of multitudes of seekers is they are even so earnest to make anything out of the doctrine or to receive any satisfying experience through it. 5. The real danger that a doctrine that is parroted so widely and received so uncritically by so many is false as understood by them. 6. I have seen faith put forward as an escape from reality, a refuge from the necessity of hard thinking, a hiding place for weak character, natural optimism, emotional thrills and nervous tics. Therefore, in the pages of this book, I will endeavor to outline for your benefit the dynamics of faith. What is faith? How does faith works? How to grow in faith? The power of faith; the Excellency of faith; the demand of faith; the perseverance of faith; the challenges of faith; the object of faith, the effect of faith; the response of faith; the discipline of faith; the necessity of faith and many more are discussed.
Vulnerability Analysis for Transportation Networks provides an integrated framework for understanding and addressing how transportation networks across all modes perform when parts of the network fail or are substantially degraded, such as extreme weather events, natural disasters, road crashes, congestion incidents or road repair. The book reviews the range of existing approaches to network vulnerability and identifies the application of each approach, illustrating them with case studies from around the world. The book covers the dimensions of time (hours, days, weeks, months and years), spatial coverage (national networks, regional areas, metropolitan and urbanized areas) and modes (road, urban public transport and national railway systems). It shows how the provided framework can be used to indicate the most suitable accessibility tools and metrics for a particular application. Vulnerability Analysis for Transportation Networks is for academics and researchers in transportation networks and for practicing professionals involved in the planning and management of transportation networks and services. Presents the most current, complete and integrated account of transport network vulnerability analysis Includes numerous case studies from around the world Compares alternative approaches to vulnerability analysis for multiple modes and the applicability of each Shows how academic transport network planning and management research development can be applied to actual practice, with special focus on socio-economic and environmental impacts
Native American sports team mascots represent a contemporary problem for modern Native American people. The ideas embedded in the mascot representations, however, are as old as the ideas constructed about the Indian since contact between the peoples of Western and the Eastern hemispheres. Such ideas conceived about Native Americans go hand-in-hand with the machinations of colonialism and conquest of these people. This research looks at how such ideas inform the construction of identity of white males from historic experiences with Native Americans. Notions of “playing Indian” and of “going Native” are precipitated from these historic contexts such that in the contemporary sense of considering Native Americans, popular culture ideas dress Native Americans in feathers and buckskin in order to satisfy stereotypic expectations of Indian-ness.
A teenage king in 223 BC, Antiochus III inherited an empire in shambles, ravaged by civil strife and eroded by territorial secessions. He proved himself a true heir of Alexander: he defeated rebel armies and embarked on a campaign of conquest and reunification. Although repulsed by Ptolemy IV at the Battle of Raphia, his eastern campaigns reaffirmed Seleucid hegemony as far as modern Afghanistan and Pakistan. Returning westward, he defeated Ptolemy V at Panion (200 BC) and succeeded in adding Koile Syria to the Seleucid realm. ??At the height of his powers, he challenged growing Roman power, unimpressed by their recent successes against Carthage and Macedon. His expeditionary force was crushed at Thermopylae and evacuated. Refusing to bow before Roman demands, Antiochus energetically mobilized against Roman invasion, but was again decisively defeated at the epic battle of Magnesia. Despite the loss of territory and prestige enshrined in the subsequent Peace of Apamea, Antiochus III left the Seleucid Empire in far better condition than he found it. Although sometimes presented as a failure against the unstoppable might of Rome, Antiochus III must rank as one of the most energetic and effective rulers of the Ancient world.??As well as narrating the eventful career of Antiochus III, Michael Taylor examines Seleucid military organization and royal administration.

The core of this monograph is the development of tools to derive well-posedness results in very general geometric settings for elliptic differential operators. A new generation of Calderón-Zygmund theory is developed for variable coefficient singular integral operators, which turns out to be particularly versatile in dealing with boundary value problems for the Hodge-Laplacian on uniformly rectifiable subdomains of Riemannian manifolds via boundary layer methods. In addition to absolute and relative boundary conditions for differential forms, this monograph treats the Hodge-Laplacian equipped with classical Dirichlet, Neumann, Transmission, Poincaré, and Robin boundary conditions in regular Semmes-Kenig-Toro domains. Lying at the intersection of partial differential equations, harmonic analysis, and differential geometry, this text is suitable for a wide range of PhD students, researchers, and professionals. “Taylor’s study critically compares the manpower and revenues of Republican Rome with those of Carthage and the Antigonid, Seleucid and Ptolemaic kingdoms.” —Dominic Rathbone, author of Civilizations of the Ancient World By the middle of the second century BCE, after nearly one hundred years of warfare, Rome had exerted its control over the entire Mediterranean world, forcing the other great powers of the region—Carthage, Macedonia, Egypt, and the Seleucid empire—to submit militarily and financially. But how, despite its relative poverty and its frequent numerical disadvantage in decisive battles, did Rome prevail? Michael J. Taylor explains this surprising outcome by examining the role that manpower and finances played, providing a comparative study that quantifies the military mobilizations and tax revenues for all five powers. Though Rome was the poorest state, it enjoyed the largest military mobilization, drawing from a pool of citizens, colonists, and allies, while its wealthiest adversaries failed to translate revenues into large or successful armies. Taylor concludes that state-level extraction strategies were decisive in the warfare of the period, as states with high conscription and low taxation raised larger, more successful armies than those that primarily sought to maximize taxation. Comprehensive and detailed, Soldiers and Silver offers a new and sophisticated perspective on the political dynamics and economies of these ancient Mediterranean empires. “An interesting read . . . Taylor has succeeded at clarifying an often-unclear topic with some fine scholarship.” —Ancient World Magazine “Taylor considers the systems of all of the major players in the Mediterranean state system . . . and that fact alone puts this study head and shoulders above similar older efforts.” —A Collection of Unmitigated Pedantry
